"I called on Mr. Biden to step aside almost a year ago, warning that he would be forever known as 'Ruth Bader Biden' if he didn’t."

"Since then, each time I would bring up that idea, publicly or privately, people would dismiss it out of hand: Get on board, they’d say, the Democrats will never replace him, it’s off the table.  Well, now it’s on the table, where it always should have been. And far from being some kind of disaster for the Democratic Party, it plays right into what works best in 21-century American culture. Americans like new.... Democrats could not buy, with all of George Soros’s money, the enthusiasm, engagement and interest they would get from having an open convention — and in Chicago no less, famous for Democratic convention drama. Suddenly, instead of rehashing the debate from hell — worst episode of 'The Golden Bachelor' ever — they would be hosting a competition, something Americans love. Who will get the rose this August in Chicago? Gavin or Gretchen? Suddenly, Stacey Abrams might say she’s in! And so might Tim Ryan, and Josh Shapiro! And Amy Klobuchar and Ruben Gallego! And Mayor Pete and Raphael Warnock! And Wes Moore, and who knows, maybe Andrew Yang says he’s a Democrat again!... My pick would be Gavin Newsom.... "

Writes Bill Maher, in "Why I Want an Open Convention" (NYT).

Maher, a comedian, claims not to be joking, but how can there be an open convention when the Democrats announced a plan to nominate Biden through a virtual convention that would take place in time to meet Ohio's ballot-access requirement?

But that's not the only reason to balk at a chaotic convention. Bandying about all those names of people who did not subject themselves to any of the debates and primaries that voters think of as a democratic process?

But let's look at the rules —"What happens if a presidential candidate cannot take office due to death or incapacitation...?" (Brookings):
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is also authorized to select the party’s nominee in the event that the winner of the convention cannot run. This is spelled out in the charter of the Democrat Party....
This has actually happened only once before. After the 1972 convention, revelations came out that George McGovern’s running mate Sen. Tom Eagleton, had been treated for mental illness. Eagleton was forced to resign from the ticket and McGovern chose Sargent Shriver as his replacement. But McGovern alone could not place Shriver on the ticket with him, it needed to be ratified by the full DNC. And so, on August 9, 1972, the DNC chair, Jean Westwood, called the national committee into session to officially nominate Shriver as McGovern’s running mate.
The authority of the national parties to choose their nominee in the event the nominee can’t run comes as a surprise to many in this day of wall-to-wall primaries. And yet, it is a reminder that the choice of a nominee is party business — not state law, not federal law, and not constitutional law....

I think the plan should be — must be — that the virtual convention will take place and nominate Biden, and after that, the DNC will choose its candidate. Will that happen before or after the formal convention? I suspect the DNC will use the formal convention to display the candidates, including the DNC's choice, and just tell us who that is later.

Jill Biden dgaf what Bill Maher thinks, and if the Democrats are really stupid enough to plan an "exciting" convention they deserve the massive civil disturbances that will accompany it.

Thinking the guy who is running California into the ground and losing population should be president is a funny thought.

The problem with closing the primary process to anyone but Joe is that most of these people have very little name recognition. I follow this stuff and I don't know who Josh Shapiro, Tim Ryan, Ruben Gallego or Wes Moore are at all, and only vaguely remember Klobuchar as someone who screams at her staff and ate with a haircomb (or something like that). Gavin has been horrible for his state, Yang is not a Democrat, Mayor Pete is so bad at his job that America knows who the Secretary of Transportation is (hat tip to Instapundit), I know Gretchen is Gretchen Whitmore, whose only claim to fame is the FBI cooking up a false flag kidnapping her and being worse on the Covid lockdowns than most. Stacey Abrams has national name recognition, but for all the wrong reasons.

I believe that, should they decide to dump Joe and Kamala, their best bet would be RFK Jr. He is already on the ballot in most states, so that issue goes away, and he has name recognition without the baggage of those listed above who people have heard of. Of course, the Dems ran him out of the party, so that ship has likely sailed.

But Bill Maher isn’t complaining about the Biden Presidency, right? Bill Maher is the author of the term “Blue Liquid Biden Voters.” Bill Maher has said repeatedly and emphatically that he would vote for Joe Biden’s disembodied head floating in a jar of blue liquid in opposition to Donald Trump.

So Bill’s problem isn’t a problem of supporting Biden with a vote, or his continuing to oppose Trump as thoroughly unfit. Bill’s just concerned about the best way to beat Trump. That’s a measured calculation, not an emotional knee jerk based on a 90-minute debate. The main concern, the overriding mission, is to beat Trump.

"Ruth Bader Biden" is a witty and accurate line. Give Maher credit for that....I wonder how this will play out. Biden doesn't appear willing to step aside, but it's obvious that he has a problem. I think if the Dem Eminence Gris (I'm not allowed to further identify this personage) thinks that the Dems can still win with him, they will indulge his delusion and let him keep the nuclear codes. The determining factor will be Biden's chances of winning. If Biden appears to be a sure loser, he's a sure goner. The Eminence Gris will find some way to remove him and put in place some non-controversial candidate. The blander, the better. That was Joe's original selling point. The Eminence Gris definitely won't do this with an open convention. The Dems are definitely in a pickle as are we all if Biden wins another term.

The negative commercials against Newsom practically write themselves.

You could have one talking about crime rates before Newsom became governor and then the crime in California in 2023

You could have one about how Newsom ordered people not to get together in large groups, then partied at an expensive restaurant. It may come at as a shock to Democrat politicians that people expect them to obey their own rules (as if they could!).

Religious people will enjoy being reminded how he reopened the brothels before he reopened the churches. That one might even cost him Muslim votes.

And then there should a longer commercial where a narrator presents the statistics that shows how businesses and the middle class are fleeing the states in droves, followed by interviews with the people who left explaining on camera which of Newsom’s policies drove them out. Summarize by reminding the viewers that with Newsom as governor one could always move away if they can’t cope with his policies. But where do you move to when you can’t stand his policies and he’s President of the United States?

Hunter’s laptop.
Carrol rape allegations.
Biden is sharp and in control.

They will swallow any lie to get what they want. They are so completely dishonest and morally compromised that only the worst type of clapping seals.

That is why they cling to the most ridiculous and obvious lie of all:

Joe Biden had 81 million voters vote for him in 2020. The government is destroying evidence and throwing people in jail to hide it and they will still say “no evidence.”

The people that support Joe Biden and the Democrat Party now are not capable of being citizens in a free society. They will always undermine the system and must be defeated and driven out.

They are just making that obvious to everyone like Maher is now.

This could get interesting. The Democratic party is the party of special interests and has long sought to create a wad of distinctive group identities. And in the last year, the special interests have been squabbling. Jews vs Islamists, working class against the credentialed, Blacks and Hispanics regular people against their groups "leaders".

Beating Trump has been failing to hold that all together. An open convention would be lit and probably spark internal conflict for decades. So I'm all for it.

Meanwhile, Trump has not "stayed in his lane" but rather sought out voters in "historic", i.e., since the 1960s, Democrat strongholds. And the thing ignored is that Trump is more a Bill Clinton Democrat than a Democrat or Republican of today, but without Bill's deference to the Democrat party leftists.

And if RFKjr had not had the temerity to run even as they were plowing the road for Biden, would his name be on these random lists of media celebrities and Democrat unknowns?

Steven Hayward offered up some cogent analysis over the weekend, referencing John King's report immediately following the debate. Especially this part:

"Right now, there is a deep, a wide, and a very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party. It started minutes into the debate, and it continues right now. It involves party strategists and involves elected officials."

Hayward points out that the institutional goals of elected Congresscritters (both houses) diverge greatly from the idiots surrounding Biden urging him to keep the path. For example, Schumer doesn't want a wipeout in the Senate. So there will continue to be inside people pushing Democrats to do something about putting a viable head on the ticket. They won't be swayed by the Old Boys Club of Obama and Clinton saying "it was a bad night."

Update on Newsome (thanks, Temujin): Keep in mind he's in the second decade of his "two-year plan to solve homelessness," which started when he was Mayor of San Fran. ICYMI he didn't do shit. Then he made the same promise as Lt. Gov. under Brown. And again he didn't do shit. Lacking any sense of reality he made the SAME promise a third time running for governor. You know already, say it with me: he didn't do shit.

Kinda like Joe's promises other than the open border. They amount to the same pile of San Fran's finest.

The dump-Biden chattering class is underestimating how such a maneuver would be perceived by voters. First, voters would see it as an admission of defeat: Trump vanquished Biden before either party held its convention. Second, they'd wake up to the fact that they'd been gaslighted all along about Biden's and even Kamala's fitness to serve as president (assuming she's not the replacement candidate). Third, dems would see it as the kind of chaos that their side, as the smart/rational set, likes to accuse Trump of. Fourth, they'd see it as anti-democratic. If the switch were done at the convention, then the choice of nominees would be made solely by Biden delegates. If after, then the DNC would decide. Simply anointing somebody whom most voters have no real familiarity with as the replacement nom and expecting everyone to get behind that person just weeks before the election is a big ask.

What these proponents of the switch seem to assume is that they are such masters of p.r. that they can gin up genuine enthusiam for ANY replacement candidate that may emerge. They're just that good. But if that were true, then they could make Biden or Harris viable and not have to change. And this whole episode is already going to make the public at least somewhat more sleery of getting the wool pulled over their eyes.

Bottom line, these people should be careful what they wish for.

But there is a practical problem in dumping Joe (or Joe resigning for that matter). Joe has campaign funds of $200 million right now. Those funds can't be used for any other candidate. Which means that the Dims new white knight (and presumably mentally competent) candidate will have to raise campaign cash while campaigning. Tough to do it all in just four month's time.

OTOH if the Dims were to tell Doctor Jill that--if Joe resigned---the Federal Election Commission wouldn't make too much of a fuss if Jill converted that $200 million to her personal use---well a wealthy widowhood wouldn't be all that bad. Stuff Joe in a hospice and go buy a villa in Monaco.

There are all sorts of names bruited, but the one not mentioned is the Voldemort creature lurking in the graveyard, and it is She-who-must-not-be-named, who can Arkancide her way straight to the nomination. That's who the Democommies will have standing at the convention speaking humbly and accepting greedily. It is finally her turn.

Enjoy the message rom the GOPe who were hell-bent on ruining America before 95% of Republican voters replaced their leadership with Trump. Simply because Trump wants to Make America Great Again we voted for him overwhelmingly in primaries in 2016 and 2024. Real Republican voters, unlike the UniTard-UniParty GOPe, don't want to sell out to collectivist Democrats and the WEF. We wanted Tea Party reforms. But the Mitches and Mitts and Pauls brushed us off, ignoring the populist cry to ACT CONSERVATIVELY.

Ironically, it took a Classically Liberal New York Democrat to break through and bring us what we wanted. Just like in 1980 it took a Classically Liberal California Democrat to play the outsider to all the LLR insiders. We love your hatred. It validates our scorn. It solidifies your place on the ash-heap of history. Love Trumps hate. And Trump exudes Love, love for America, love for tradition, love for the Rule of Law.

If he had even a fraction of the dirt on him that the Bidens and Clintons and Obamas had the GOPe-DNC-Media complex would have found it ten years ago and killed this candidacy in its cradle. But he didn't, so y'all had to made shit up, peddle Russian conspiracies, use Hillary's brilliant plan, which in the end was going to backfire. Because above all the hallmark of GOPe is incompetence. He who I am not naming demonstrates that very characteristic here, completely unable to get even basic civil rights correct although he claims to be a lawyer. Incompetence. You see it all around the Uniparty. Turn your hatred up to Eleven, GOPe, let it eat at you from the inside out.

Trump 2024 for the LOVE of everything American!

I think Kamala Harris is going to be the nominee.

And she will probably pick a white male to be her veep. Identity politics is all they know.

But who would take the job?

If anything sucks worse than vice president, it's trying to be vice president and not getting the job.

I'm number two! Not.

This is why Sergeant Shriver didn't cause any worries for Republicans in 1976.

Harris could go with a double female whammy, I guess.

Girl power.

Actually, the more likely scenario is that she would pick somebody out of Biden's cabinet.

Somebody who's soon to be unemployed.

I think Harris/Buttigieg might be the Democrat ticket.

If Biden digs in, can the DNC change the rules to release his pledged delegates for the first ballot? That sounds difficult but a lot of fun for everyone else.

There will be a Federal judge to rule that Ohio's law was unconstitutional for Federal elections

She'd be overruled right quickly. The US Constitution is explicit about the state legislatures making the rules for choosing prez electors. I suspect the Dems may have to give up Ohio to Trump in August to have any chance in the rest of the country. If Biden wins Ohio when he's not on the ballot elsewhere, and all the Dem electors become faithless (from Joe to whomever) after the election, the Republican Ohio legislature could and should overrule them back to Biden.

When Obama spun that Joe just had a bad night and that he would do better in future, I expected the NYT and its editorial crew to walk back their demand that he step down. This would have demonstrated who is really in charge. But so far that hasn't happened. This reinforces my belief that Obama is just a slick front man for the Grey Eminence and not its driver. He's just too lazy to make the effort.

Jake2356 said...

I've heard a couple of commentators reference the virtual vote, as you did, so I did some research. Ohio has now passed an exception to its ballot access law allowing a later date for the Democrats to name their candidate, eliminating the need for a virtual vote. I believe the DNC never formally approved that vote and now will not.

The wagons circle. Joe thinks he won the debate technically and is supported by Jill and Hunter who each have very powerful reasons to keep him in the race. Joe the fighter. Joe the comeback kid. Joe down but not out. Never quit Joe. Writes itself. He is not going to quit. Nope.

One answer to the box the Democrats have put themselves in is to replace Kamala Harris as Vice President nominee with the expectation that Biden will earlier or later resign or be resigned.

President Biden would retain his position at the top of the ticket, but the successor to him would be more palatable to Democrats than Ms. Harris.

Of course, the Vice President nominee replacement, per the protocol of the left, would need to check the racial, gender and ideology categories. Whitmer? Michele Obama?

Correct me if I'm wrong. But I understand those funds are for Biden-Harris and so they can be used for Kamala.

Politicians with easy races often transfer campaign donations to other candidates to build influence. I don't see why the Biden-Harris campaign couldn't transfer funds to the Whitmer-Gallego campaign.

Biden could resign the presidency in favor of Harris and let her run as an incumbent. Statesmanlike! The fact that nobody is proposing this suggests that the Democrats really, really think she's a loser.

Bidens won't relinquish the ticket (or the presidency) unless Democratic Party both shows them the prepared blackmail and/or indictment material (of which there is plenty) , AND shows them the 9-figure check funded by major corporate and billionaire contributors to Democratic Party. It's all negotiation and threats now.

Bidens' German shepherd dogs have bitten people dozens of times at White House, and yet the dog(s) are still in residence, whether at WH or at beachfront Delaware mansion. Clearly, neither Biden has any regard for physical safety of their aides and staffers. That speaks loudly to the actual character of sleazy selfish (and amoral) Bidens. Read the memoir book of Hunter's ex-wife, the good Catholic girl from Chicago, poor woman, she's lucky to be alive, and hopefully, still in good health. I'm dismayed for the Biden grandchildren, who enjoy largesse of the American taxpayers and learning the sleaze-bag Biden business.

The pressure on him to withdraw seems to have peaked on Saturday- I am seeing all kinds of essays today encouraging Democrats to rally around him. The pressure to withdraw is abating.

What strikes me is how honest the media has been since the debate.

This CNN article, published today, is brutal for Biden.

And we haven't seen the wave of bad polling yet. Democrats are still bracing for that.

In my lifetime, I've never seen the media so intent on bringing a Democrat down.

The media is worried about a Trump victory, yes, but they also know that 50 million Americans watched the debate. And it seems to me that the mainstream media has defiantly and completely divorced themselves from its biased support of the Biden campaign.

Journalists are acting like journalists now. Or, if you play 3-D chess, they're acting like DNC operatives who want Biden out.

I'm actually going to CNN to find out the news. Shock!

Saint Croix said...

Blood is in the water and Biden, like Nixon, has an enemies list. And it's filled with journalists!

Biden hates the NYT now.

And he blames CNN for his debate.

He's mad at NBC.

All that free advertising that Democrats get from the mainstream media? It's all bad news for Biden.

Saint Croix said...

I'm trying to imagine how the NYT would advise people to vote in November if he stays in. "Vote for Biden/Harris, he had a good record and she's our hope for the future."

If Biden doesn't pull out, Harris is the key variable for Democrats, right? Lots of people will be tuning in for the Vice-President debates, to see what kind of president she will be.

Meanwhile, people have to wonder, will he ever step down? Will his wife let him step down? Or is the plan for Biden to mumble and stumble and forget what's going on for all four years?

Saint Croix said...

Biden could resign the presidency in favor of Harris and let her run as an incumbent. Statesmanlike! The fact that nobody is proposing this suggests that the Democrats really, really think she's a loser.

That's really what they should do. 50 million Americans saw the debate. Probably 200 million Americans will see brutal ads from the debate. And the Democrats are still saying ridiculous shit like "he's not good at night" or "he had too much preparation" or "his campaign screwed up" or "he had a cold." The excuses are embarrassing and unbelievable.

He should step down from office, and let Harris defend his record. (And appoint a vice president). I don't think he's capable of making that move.

Saint Croix said...

I don't see why the Biden-Harris campaign couldn't transfer funds to the Whitmer-Gallego campaign.

In that scenario, Biden would have to stay in office until after the convention.

He would have to secretly pick Whitmer to be the nominee. And she would have to secretly pick Gallego to be her veep.

Then Biden would have to transfer millions of dollars to the Whitmer campaign.

And then Biden resigns from the campaign and announces his support for Whitmer, the untested and largely unknown governor? She has little name recognition, no infrastructure, and won zero votes in the 2024 primary.

Meanwhile, Kamala is having a shit-fit. And African-Americans vote for Trump in record numbers.

@MeToo. Maher is half right - Biden is finished and they have to get him out and the only way is the convention and it will be interesting. But Maher is overlookin what a force political ambition and ego are and what terrible blows heavy-weight contenders will land on each other and what enduring bitterness will be created. Dr. Jilly isn't going to let either Kamala or Hillary replace her. Josh Shapiro is Jewish and the far left won't let him in, thus creating even more bitterness, for the attempt and for the antisemitism that meets it. James Clyburn won't let Kamala fall and no one else will let her rise. Elizabeth Warren, why not? Gruesome Newsom, the Bane of California. And so on. Basically, the left has been sitting on the pressure release valve within the party, allowing no discussion and no dissension. Now a weak place has blown and a trainload of ambitious politicians like a trainload of damaged, leaking, volatile, dangerous chemicals, has been dumped into the political process.
And, furthermore, the American people all saw how infirm Joe Biden is and what liars the White House and the media have been about him. It's not like the half of the American People which is just now understanding that THEY'VE BEEN DUPED is just going to sit down for another "Kick Me" sign on their collective back. But it's unknown what they will do except discuss it over the 4th.

PS The Dem party can change its rules - there's no doubt of that. What it can't do is change the nature of politics and politicians. Popcorn time.

My husband tells me that Newsom's approval rating is lower than Biden's. (I can totally believe it - he's a disaster for California who has never faced a competitive race, and people HATE California.) Also that Harris is now above Biden (though neither is above 50%).

And once the debate is fully in the rear-view mirror, it will occur to a lot of Democrats that someone has been running things... Why not just let them continue to do so?

I think there will be those who will stay pissed off about the Big Lie, and will either switch or stay home. I hope there will be. But I don't think there will be as many as our commentariat here appears to believe.

I think that this gives away where Chuck is coming from. He probably is a LLR from MI, who has watched his party move from the elite country clubs, as well as Main Street, to being the populist party. The unwashed masses have taken over the party. He hates Trump because his class hates Trump, but deep down cannot defend FJB’s policies or achievements. Rationally, he should still be voting Republican, but can’t do it, because the Republican Party are now the populist party, filled with crass working class people. People without the sensibilities of their leaders, like Chuck.

I say this as a 6th generation Republican, with the older 4 generations buried in MI. No doubt, my late mother, their descendant, would also be appalled at where her sacred party has gone.

Yancey Ward said...

"I think that this gives away where Chuck is coming from."

Possibly true, but I think the bigger issue Chuck has is that he spent over a year claiming Trump couldn't win in 2016 and being proven wrong in such a spectacular manner broke him. He has spent the last 7.5 years trying to reclaim what he sees as dignity not realizing that it will never happen in this forum as pretty much everyone knows how angry and spiteful he is besides being colossally stupid.

Drago said...

Bruce Hayden: "He (Chuck) probably is a LLR from MI..."

Not a chance.

You don't go from being republican, a real republican of whatever stripe, to being on the far, far left of the New Soviet Democratical Party and spent 10 years passionately defending every indefensible democratical policy, politician and lefty tactic. Particularly the lefty destruction of all our institutions without ALWAYS having been a true democratical in your heart.

It's impossible.

Rusty said...

Heres my take. The media is going to become resigned to Biden running again. He is the nominee after all. The real race will be who is selected to be his vice president. It won't be Harris. I wouldn't be surprised if its Hillary, but that would be low hanging fruit and not in the best interests of a long term Democrat reign. Joe will resign shortly into his second term.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

It's impossible.

Yet, Drago, we watched Bill Kristol and Steven F Hayes do it with our own eyes. I'm with Bruce here: it really is a class war with these LLRs who have partially lost control of their party. They still dominate Congress, of course, but the ranks of populist replacements to compliment Trump as the headliner are growing, and Chuck's share is dwindling. He hates MTG more than any of us even dislike Pelosi and Schumer and Hillary.
