Wow. Whose side is Andrew Cuomo on? Or is the point so clear, it doesn't matter? Or he's laying the groundwork for 2028?

What I hear him saying between the lines: I was the one with good senseand you made me cede the ground to these clowns. Look what they've done. Don't you miss me?

The Cuomos of America give the nice moderate people of America the illusion that there are reasonable Dems somewhere. Serious people! Not clowns! But of course the Dems have moved left and are not about to move back. They are counting on abortion overrriding immigration and inflation to solidify their prog turn. Contra Cuomo, they think lawfare will be either a wash that nicely hamstrings Trump's campaign or a net gain in that it persuades nice people not to vote for a "convicted felon." It's a rational calculation.

Cuomo will never be President, but he might well become governor of New York again- or even U.S. Senator. I am wondering which of the two NY Senators he is most pissed off at.

Yancey Ward said...

"Same could be said for Hunter prosecutions on both coasts."

True- if Joe Biden had remained retired in 2020 it is all but certain that Hunter Biden is never even investigated the DoJ. However, the Bidens have only themselves to blame for Hunter Biden's conviction- if the DoJ had never tried to put Trump behind bars, it is also true that Hunter Biden never would have been investigated by the DoJ. Even worse, though, is that all Hunter Biden had to do was plead guilty with the original plea agreement that had a small fine and no jail time- plus, had he done so the rest of the potential charges would have been quietly allowed to expire with the statute of limitations. Instead of doing that very smart thing, the Bidens decided to roll the dice on Hunter just getting acquitted by juries in Delaware and California. The first of those bets came up snake eyes- the second might well do so, too, since the case there is even stronger.

The thing you keep omitting, Readering, is that Hunter Biden is being investigated and tried by his father's own DoJ- so he isn't being rail-roaded the way Trump is being rail-roaded- the two examples are even close to being the same.

Yancey Ward said...

"You don't get a choice on how to refer to them."

Chuck, do you really not understand what is wrong with the above?

Let me make it simple for you- everyone, literally everyone gets a choice on how to refer to any political party. If someone wants to call the Democrats the Pedophile Party, that is a choice they have a right to make.

Yet, despite that, both can say with great force: "you made me cede the ground to these clowns. Look what they've done. Don't you miss me?" And the voters do miss them. In NY, Cuomo was able to control the the uber-lefty clowns in Albany, unlike our current governor who is a bad joke (NY's version of Kamala!) and they run circles around her. I got the impression the disagreements between Trump and Cuomo as well as to a certain degree Trump and Newsom were, to use the oft-quoted phrase from the Godfather, 'just business.' Not that they were contrived but that they simply didn't have the personal animus that appears evident in, say, Nancy Pelosi's disagreements (a trait also exhibited by a number of commenters here). I'm pretty certain the manner of Cuomo's defenestration and replacement by an AWFL is also a likely influence on his thinking.

It would have to be a very different Democrat Party (FU Chuck) for Cuomo to have a shot at the 2028 nomination but who knows.

It's to "Save Democracy!" by preventing people from voting for one side, after all.

That's not such a high bar, but here in NY not so many of our politicians pass it. I'd rather have Cuomo as Mayor than DeBlasio or whoever, and I hope he runs.

Politics in NY is strange. I blame Reynolds vs Sims which found unwritten words in the Constitution that said states couldn't be set up the same way as the federal government because it violated the one man one vote provision that isn't there.

I recall reading in the Albany Times Union one year when the assembly, senate, and governor were squabbling over the budget that they had reached compromise that was satisfactory to all. Out here in real world compromise means they agreed on some number between the highest and lowest. In Bizzaro World inhabited by NY politicians, the compromise was to fund everything and the resulting approved budget was substantially higher than any of the 3 proposals.

@mikee, if Cuomo really did kill the most elderly nursing home residents, it wasn’t as though he didn’t have ample competition from the likes of Whitmer in Michigan, Murphy in New Jersey, and Wolf in Pennsylvania. There were probably other governors whose administrations issued “must admit” orders to nursing homes and elder care facilities with respect to COVID-19 patients, but I think these four were the most egregious. Where I disagree with you, mikee, is that they weren’t just trying to avoid making Trump look good — they wanted to run up the death toll to actively make Trump’s administration look bad, and they didn’t care how many innocent bystanders they had to kill to do it.

She sent the prosecutor back to the drawing board and by then it was too late to cover things up. Hunter had to be thrown under the bus for charges that can’t be linked back to Joe. They’re hoping the tax issues can be covered up. That’s where Joe is in peril."

It was most definitely the case, Steve- the judge only wanted it publicly clarified that the plea deal did not give Hunter Biden immunity on the rest of the charges, which the prosecution reluctantly agreed that it didn't- that part of the immunity was an unwritten agreement between the two parties. The judge upset things by making the prosecutors declare yea or nay on the immunity on the other charges. The judge might have rejected the plea deal had Hunter Biden and legal team right then and there agreed to the plea deal without immunity on the other charges attaching but she surely would have been overturned on appeal and there is nothing she can do to make the government indict and try someone.

The Bidens fucked it up by thinking no jury in Delaware would convict Hunter- a bet I would have made, too, by the way- but they and I were wrong. I think part of the calculation was that they were afraid that the judge might disregard the recommendations for leniency and give Hunter the max allowed by the law for the gun charges.

Without his ouster from office - wouldn’t Democrats have rallied behind a Biden/Cuomo ticket for 2024?

Too white too male.

It just occurred to me that maybe part of the vitriol against Trump is that if your opponent really is Worse Than Hitler™, you're justified in taking any measures necessary to defeat him. (That's not the new thing. We all knew that part before. The new thing that occurred to me was:)

Even if it means you have to bypass a queer woman of color or a BIPOC trans person or whatever.

Basically I'm wondering whether every single person who declares that Diversity Is Our Strength!™ is just giving lip service to that idea - that they all know that when push comes to shove, when, say, your opponent is Literally Hitler™, you have to go with performance.

(Not just merit. Sowell dispenses with that idea: merit="worth," which is still subjective. Performance is an actual metric.)

For the children!

Jamie, that’s a good point. Defeating Hitler trumps principles.

The only people I've ever heard whine about using "Democrat" instead of "Democratic", as if it's a huge insult, are members of the Democrat Party.

I'm wondering if the Democrat Party is going to try and revive Cuomo to replace Biden.

It seems exceptionally easy to say "Well, this is a bad thing" after it already happened.

Where was Maher during the trial? Cuomo? Did they say anything while the trial was ongoing?

And for the mention of Hunter: His father's DoJ tried to give him a laughably generous plea deal AND allowed his most serious offenses fall off due to statute of limitations, so they are doing the minimum to attempt to claim justice is being done.
