Just repeating a comment I wrote for another thread on a different Althouse post. If we want to end the practice of lawfare then we have to make it hurt.

[T]he pain has to extend far down the ballot. Not just Trump over Biden, but the Republican over the Democrat in the senate race, in the Congressional race, in the governor and state legislature races, heck, all the way down to dog catcher. Even if one of those Democrat candidates you are voting against is a personal friend who is godparent to your favorite child, you have to tell him (or her) that there’s nothing personal, but you must send a message to the Democrat Party. And then send that message.

Washington state does not permit felons to run for political office so Trump likely will have his name stripped from the ballot. But MAGAts need not worry because Biden won the liberal state in 2020 by 20 points or 750K votes and "winner takes all" is used to apportion the 12 electoral college votes assigned to the state.

Raymond Santana, one of New York City’s wrongly accused “Central Park Five,” said Donald Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts of business fraud was a case of karma in action.

Santana was one of five Black and Brown teenagers who were “charged, tried, and convicted” of beating a raping a woman in New York’s Central Park in 1989.

“Donald Trump paid for full-page ads in New York City newspapers. He called for the death penalty to be reinstated in New York. Trump wanted us boys killed!” Blackwell said. “In 2002, a convicted rapist and murderer confessed to the Central Park rape, and the Central Park Five became ‘The Exonerated Five.’ But Trump never acknowledged our innocence or apologized.”

After all the posts yesterday and today, and the attendant comments, the feeling I'm sensing from people who were on the fence or just either side of center is that this trial, even more than the one before it, represents a betrayal of our nation's values.

I can only hope that it will translate to a margin of votes too big to be overcome by cheating. Trump's not my favorite, and I don't see him as a rescuer, but if he can hold the line long enough for some actual justice to come around, that would be a good start. Certainly his SCOTUS picks have helped stave off some of the worst things that would otherwise have happened.

Perhaps gadfly could cite the RCW that he is quoting. The requirements for Federal office are set in the U.S. Constitution, not in a state's RCWs. In fact, the state RCWs for elections state:

RCW 29A.24.031
Declaration of candidacy.
A candidate who desires to have his or her name printed on the ballot for election to an office other than president of the United States, vice president of the United States, or an office for which ownership of property is a prerequisite to voting shall complete and file a declaration of candidacy. The secretary of state shall adopt, by rule, a declaration of candidacy form for the office of precinct committee officer and a separate standard form for candidates for all other offices filing under this chapter. Included on the standard form shall be:

...

RCW 29A.24.075
Qualifications for filing, appearance on ballot.
...
(4) The requirements of voter registration and residence within the geographic area of a district do not apply to candidates for congressional office. Qualifications for the United States congress are specified in the United States Constitution.

[emphasis added]

Hence the need to turn a misdemeanor, that was past the statue of limitations into a federal felony and try it in a deep blue district in a blue state. The Democrats can't win with their policies, so they have to remove their opponent through lawfare.

Gadfly, were you trying to make some other point? Because if you were, it likely failed.

Brought forward from earlier in the week…

I, too, hardly ever follow any of Narciso's links, for the same 2 reasons:
1) Not providing any information about what it's about, and
2) Not providing a “hot” html link.

Beyond that:
3) Nor has Narciso ever provided real, working hot links, in my experience of many years reading Althouse—though he did make an attempt once that I recall. I did offer to help him (as I have others on this site), to no response.

As far as others (I have no hope for Narciso) wanting to post hot html links, here are the major problems I've noticed people making which prevents their hot links from working:

1) While quote characters are not always required bracketing the url string, there can be characters incorporated in that string which make it so the url must be quoted.
2) If one puts quotes around the url string, the close-quote must be the same type of quote character as the open-quote: that is, use only single-quotes or double-quotes, not one of each; also, if you put a quote at the start of the url, put another at the end, and vice versa.
3) Whether you use single- or double-quotes enveloping the url, those quotes cannot be “smart” (a.k.a. “curly”)—that is, only "straight" [sic] quotes can be used. Thus, for instance, on an iPhone, either go into Settings/General/Keyboard and turn off “Smart Punctuation” altogether—or in the particular instance, while typing in the html code (using the iPhone's crappy on-screen keyboard), override that setting by holding down the quote key for a few seconds until the subsidiary menu comes up, then select the appropriate straight (non curly) quotes.

It's also a good idea to copy and paste the url, rather than typing it in (with great risk of a typo); but in doing so, make sure you've got the whole string, no more and no less. (Though portions following a question mark ‘?’ can typically be excluded—not so, however, for links to the Althouse commentariat.)

A final step before posting: proofread especially the html code.

One other thing: I understand folks wishing to see where a link is going to take them, before following it. However, utilizing hot links one can always do so, whether or not the actual destination url is displayed in the visible html title for the link. On computers simply hover your mouse over the displayed link text, and the url will be displayed (typically on the status line of the browser window at lower-left—turn on the browser's status line if necessary in its settings).

On (e.g.) an iPhone, rather than just touching the link (to follow it), hold down your finger on the link for a few seconds; a subsidiary menu will open up providing various options for the link (such as following it), but it also displays the hover-over text (i.e., the link's url) for one to consider before following it or not.

I know the foregoing sounds like a lot, but really it's about as difficult as making sure (just one of) your sentences (the computer code one) start(s) with a capital letter and end(s) with a period.

Why (semi) insist on hot links? Because a) they're really not difficult to provide if you're posting—I always do—while b) for the reader, life's too short to have to go through a rigmarole (especially on, e.g., an iPhone) of selecting (exactly!) the entire url, copying it to the clipboard, opening up a new browser window, pasting it in, and then going to it—when you're not even remotely confident up-front it's anything interesting. It also reflects on the poster, in my view, when they don't provide hot html links as a service to the reader.

Trump is not and never was a moral role model. His personal conduct strongly resembles 1990s Bill Clinton. Trump's COVFEFE communication method and political appointments of family members and [incompetent/devious] business associates cannot be defended in any way. Still, he has always had the sharp and competitive edge of 1990s Bill Clinton too. Trump successfully slithered his way through the NY swamp for several decades. No one running a NY business can be a saint.

What made Trump incredibly impactful is that he put an end to dysfunctionally polite diplomatic distortions -- these started as "white lies" to smooth over cultural rifts (e.g., claims that women can have a family and a career in comfort; blacks are mainly discriminated against and personal lifestyles/ambitions/responsibilities mean nothing; criticism of Islamic violence is racism, protecting the border is racism, lying about COVID to preserve relations with China is "science," etc.). If known as white lies then these are often tolerated, but outsiders and the next generation misunderstand polite lies. Instead, the naive zealots became Woke and self-destructive hypocrites, and no public figure but Trump told the truth about official state polite lies.

Trump was the precipitator of a new era but he didn't cause anything: he was the end product of official government polite lies versus the liberation of alternative viewpoints with the rise of social media. If the Obama administration had not governed ENTIRELY on polite lies, twisting and inventing laws per agency "rules," and dodging responsibilities (i.e., Obama's flagship healthcare law was "deemed passed" because the cowards wouldn't directly vote on it) then Trump's election might have been avoided.

But, clueless old-money power defends old-money ideas and cowardly methods. Cultural wounds cannot be healed by putting more and more bandages over dirty infections. The 2017 to 2024 lawfare efforts against Trump layer hostile government political lies on top of polite lies and push away the truth problem through intimidation. We all know how this may end: (1) Cultural breakdown, (2) War and revolution, (3) Rule by a Praetorian Guard, and/or (4) honesty and self-correction. Gorbachev's USSR and Botha's South Africa attempted to self-correct, but the revolutions still arrived. The excesses/deaths of Mao's China led to the end of ideological communism and rise of partial capitalism.

Trump's main function was as the bringer of a new era, and this was complete several years ago. We are now in the denial/pushback phase by those who don't want the USA World Police/WW2/Cold War order to end. I fear that the old-money establishment must die off before the new era can be accepted, and the political leaders of the next era will NOT be anyone over age 70. Let Biden, Trump, Schumer, Pelosi, and McConnell retire and die. Let the current crew of politically manipulative Bond Villain billionaires die off too. Then move ahead with fewer polite lies and more reality.

You should pay attention to the recent 9-0 SCOTUS case about taking Trump off state ballots.
