Similar to the claim that mail in ballots are secure because your signature is verified. OK, how is it verified? Who is verifying it? Is it possible to verify millions of ballots in the timeframe required?

And just as obvious, the answer is un-auditable. Access to voter roll databases is a public legal right too - but just try doing it.

Arizona proof of citizenship requirements ...

Important Information Regarding Proof of Citizenship
A person must be a U.S. citizen in order to register and vote.

A person who submits valid proof of citizenship with his or her voter registration form (regardless of the type of form submitted) is entitled to vote in all federal, state, county and local elections in which he or she is eligible. The voter registration form otherwise must be sufficiently complete.

A person is not required to submit proof of citizenship with the voter registration form, but failure to do so means the person will only be eligible to vote in federal elections (known as being a "federal only" voter). A "federal only" voter will become eligible to vote a "full ballot" in all federal, state, county and local elections if he or she later provides valid proof of citizenship to the appropriate County Recorder's office.

Federal only voters may use the Federal Voter Registration form ...

We've had numerous instances shown of security flaws in electronic voting machines.

So tell me more about how illegal aliens will be prevented from voting.

Democrats hold every state office in AZ, except for Treasurer (Kimberly Yee).

They cheated in the last election by shutting down voting in Maricopa County and stuffing the ballot boxes.

If Trump wins AZ, it will be because he had a 10 point lead (whittled down to 2 points by Dem fraud).

Note that the Dems have McCain Republicans as their allies.

Back in the day (2005-19) when I worked as an election official, I always wondered how someone could be a citizen when they couldn't read or speak English, thus requiring a ballot in their language. I thought they had to pass a test in English to become a citizen

One time we had a first time voter (Russian) who brought her letter from the government that said she had passed her test and was now going to be a citizen. We stood and applauded

As far as I know, there aren't any "checks" on citizenship when registering to vote. Citizenship is handled by the federal government and voting registration is usually handled by the state or county government. Totally different bureaucracies. They just take your word for it that you're a citizen.

After all, just look at the jurisdictions where non-citizens are allowed to vote on local issues like school board elections.

"Has Althouse or her significant other utilized absentee/mail-in ballots? Has anyone in Althouse world utilized mail in ballots? If so — would you explain the personal information that was required to obtain a ballot."

I used absentee ballots twice in my life- first time was in 1992's presidential election when I had to move in early October from Chicago. I presented a photo ID and SSN card at some official office and filled out the form to have the ballot sent to where I would be on Election Day which was Atlanta. I don't remember if they mailed me the ballot or I got it that day I applied for it, but I do remember mailing it in. What I do remember though, is that I couldn't have lied that day about who I was without some forged documents and I literally had to physically go and apply for it with the reason why (which didn't require any proof) though it might have been possible to do it through the mail but I didn't have the time to wait for it since I didn't know exactly when I would depart Chicago.

The second time I used an absentee ballot for the 1996 election since I was at a chemistry conference at Tahoe on Election Day- again I went to the local state election office and was asked for a photo ID and one other proof of identity which was probably the SSN card or my birth certificate. That ballot I got through the mail and mailed it back well before Election Day because I knew months ahead of time where I would be on Election Day.

My overall point, though, is this- in both instances I was literally asked for proof of identity- they didn't just hand or mail me a ballot because I sent in a form asking for one with no proof of identity. While I have no idea how they verified my ballot after I mailed it back, there were no security issues involved in how I obtained that ballot. In some states I could, today, just request one in the mail using any name I wish with whatever address I want to use and I have no idea what steps are taken to verify that I indeed would be the right voter with the right address and the more I try to find out how this is done the more opaque the process seems to be- we basically have to trust that politically motivated people handling these requests are too ethical to cheat. I don't trust anyone that much with anything no matter how trivial.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Krassendtein is happy to participate in the Big Gaslighting. “Checks” he says. What checks? These states are purposely not checking. California has done this for years. All that’s required is they “accidentally” check the box “I am eligible to vote in this state.” No follow up. And no penalty of perjury if you lie, i mean, accidentally register yourself and your whole family. Oopsie!

I voted absentee in the 2016 presidential election because I was out of the country on election day. Went to a Madison library, showed ID, filled out the ballot and handed it back to the same official who handed it to me. Before Trump, one of my election law heroes was conservative lawyer and writer Hans von Spakovsky. There was a time when von Spakovsky was a careful, thoughtful conservative advocate questioning the particular problem of non-citizen voting. It was, to von Spakovsky, a problem that he acknowledged was rare, and quite uncertain in scale (for which he wanted more studies, and more protections to require proof of citizenship to vote), but which might make a possible difference in very rare, close local elections. All of which is well within reasonable conservative thought. I had the privilege of meeting and sharing ideas with Hans at a Federalist Society meeting in Lansing, pre-Trump.

Did Althouse have any answers, or any other readings, or even any other thoughts in her own question; “How are those checks working out?” Okay, I’d say. With some room for improvement (even if only perceptually). But certainly the absolute last people whom I would turn to on the subject would be election law morons Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

Jupiter said...

No, as a matter of fact, there are no checks. Krassenstein is gaslighting. There is no process for preventing non-citizens from registering, and there is no process for removing non-citizens from the voter rolls. And the Democrats want it to stay that way. I wonder why.

A lot of the same people who are saying "Trust us" are the ones who fight tooth and nail any effort at making elections secure or doing audits of how they have been run. If you know your process is secure, you won't have a problem with being challenged to demonstrate this to be true. Stonewalling efforts to examine or secure the process is a clear indication that fraud is occurring.

Jerry said...

Yes, we saw how 'transparent' the process was in 2020, when even the mere mention of the possibility of examination got the people counting the votes screaming louder than jet engines in full afterburner that there was NO WAY IN HELL that the vote could be compromised, and we MUST accept it, without audit or question.

And yet, you heard of stacks of mail-in ballots being fed through multiple times with only the Presidential race checked off, and obviously never having gone through the tender care of the USPS. Stopping the count at midnight and resuming it at 3 AM and Biden getting a MASSIVE number of votes. Whistleblowers saying that they saw stuff that should never have happened.

At a certain point you go "Okay, we really needed to look at all this, no matter how much the people who run it complained."

"The more he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons."

The single best sentence that I read this month was in the single best column that I read this month. From Andrew Egger in The Bulwark.

I’ll put the sentence (bolded) in the context of two paragraphs from the column:

In case you’ve somehow forgotten, here is Donald Trump’s narrative of what happened in the 2020 election. He defeated Joe Biden easily—or he would have, if it weren’t for dastardly Democratic cheating across a suite of swing states, which resulted in untold Trump votes going uncounted and untold phony Biden ballots counted from thin air. He and his lawyers had unbelievable heaps of evidence proving this fraud—but election officials and the courts were too cowardly to let them win their cases. Result: Biden to the White House, Trump to Mar-a-Lago.

This narrative has taken an almighty pummeling since the day Trump and his allies first rolled it out, for the simple reason that every specific accusation of fraud they tried to bring forward collapsed at the first whiff of scrutiny. Their lawsuits crumpled by the dozens. Their promised reams of definitive evidence kept going up in smoke.

What kind of checks?

If asking for voter ID is a sure sign of racism...
And statewide ballots are mailed out in many states now and mailed to every name at every address that has ever registered with that state....
And ballot harvesting has been legalized and is going on in many states...
And non-official ballot drop boxes are strategically placed by outside companies in key voting districts...
And the voting period had been extended from 1 day to many weeks now, including in some states, even past the actual election day (I'm looking at you, Pennsylvania)...
And at any time, key voting precincts in key states might just...have to close down for the night, kick out all of the counters and media, but keep a handful of 'key employees' on hand to continue to count so that...
Hours later, in the middle of the night, the 'other guy' is shown to have taken the lead...

What checks do we have for ANY of this?

And this is how you get a Sack O'Potatoes as President and a Vegetable Salad as Vice President.

In order to receive an absentee ballot, a registered voter MUST provide the following necessary information:
Name
Date of birth
Iowa residential address
Voter Verification Number (ID Number)
Iowa Driver's License or Non-Operator ID Number OR
Four digit Voter PIN located on the voter's Iowa Voter ID Card
Any voter may request an Iowa Voter ID Card by contacting their County Auditor's Office
The name OR date of the election for which you are requesting an absentee ballot
Party affiliation - only required for Primary Elections, which are held in even numbered years
Signature and date the form was completed

THAT is what you need to provide.. In IOWA.

There are currently two types of states..
States where you have to prove who you are in order to vote (these are called 'Red States')
States where you can just vote, whoever and whatever you are (these are called 'Blue States')

Are you following Rich?
In SOME STATES you have to be an Actual Person.. Not Only THAT; in Those states you have to be a citizen

All of these election legitimacy problems have very, very simple solutions. And virtually all of these simple solutions are hotly contested and fought tooth & nail in Democrat precincts and states. That is the first, primary instance of 'not passing the smell test'. If you won't stand for an audit of a public election function, then you have something to hide.

There are some states that have voter rolls exceeding the population of the state. How can this be defended? By not admitting it, and by not allowing public inspection of the voter rolls, and by ignoring federal and state laws mandating their accuracy.

From a practical standpoint, voter rolls can be loaded and viewed in a relational database, and subjected to query. Similarly, immigration rolls can be queried as relational databases - and maybe even compared. It is one of the earliest features of computational operations. It is basic computer science. And yet: So many Secretaries of State erect barriers to volunteer organizations that want to do this work for free, to filter out erroneous or obsolete entries. We can't have that !

The fact that these volunteer efforts are opposed, tells you all you need to know about the legitimacy of those offices, and those election executives. By their action, they specifically don't want free & fair elections. So: the first remedy is revision of the oath of office for these positions and the threat of Federal oversight on corrupt local elections .

In my opinion, Donald Trump should have deployed Federal Marshals to those precincts that clearly violated election law - like the suspicious early morning water leak, or the dismissal of Republican poll monitors, like all the early morning vote counts and the paper-over of windows. The Marshals should have been there, standing watch, making certain that the rules were being followed to the 'T'.

Motor Voter laws which are in force in about half the country, mean you are automatically registered to vote when you get a driver's license. No one asks if you eligible.

"Automatic voter registration (AVR) is a process in which eligible individuals are automatically registered to vote when interacting with certain government agencies, such as a department of motor vehicles.
...
About half the states and Washington, D.C., are categorized by NCSL as having enacted or implemented automatic voter registration."
https://www.ncsl.org/elections-and-campaigns/automatic-voter-registration

Here's a map showing which states have motor voter laws. as you can see the whole west coast, and the whole northeast down to Virginia, Georgia, Illinois, Wisconsin.

The 10 million illegal aliens mostly have driver's licenses by now. Everyone who came in on the PAROLE program does - 30,000 Cubans and Venezuelans, Haitians, Nicaraguans a month for at least the last year, living no knows where, registered to vote there. You think they won't vote? Every hear of ballot harvesting? And after the election? I hear mortgage rates are expected to go up in Venezuela right after the election due to a flood of returnees with money to buy a house - but that may be just an urban legend.

Jamie said...

Someone said, "Obviously, the question is how are those checks working out?"

No, the question is why are these voter registration applications being distributed to illegal aliens?

That really is the question. In what scenario, anywhere, does someone who has entered the country illegally have the right to vote?

Now, I could see the possibility that no one at the welfare office is asking whether a person is in the country legally. And everyone in the welfare office gets a voter registration form.

But that seems an awful lot like - let's see - what my husband and I do at Halloween each year: in addition to candy for the kids, we have little bottles of water for kids and adults and little beers (Coronitas) for adults only. If we were to hand a beer to every person who came to the house who might possibly be of legal drinking age, relying on that person to tell the truth and assuming that some other authority was actually going to check up on their legal drinking status - that's kind of what it would be like.

But we don't do that. We give beers to the obvious over-21s and not to the questionable (and we do not allow ourselves to get distracted by the teenagers taking their younger siblings around who try to employ an "Over there! Whatever can that be?" strategy. They can show an ID if they are carrying it - I do take their ID at face value because carrying a fake trick-or-treating in order to score an 8-oz beer seems like a stretch.

Okay, Mr. He Who Is Banned and is So Void of Self Respect that He Continues to Comment Here":
How many of those challenges were not accepted by the corrupt and leftist judges who ruled that the parties had "no standing" and dismissed them for THAT reason, NEVER going to trial. Not to mention the state and federal officials who were in the bag and probably part of the election fraud, went after anyone who DARED to challenge said fraud and tried (in some cases, successfully) to ruin their careers and lives. The US Government's Deep State and those who participated in this election fraud - as well as the Biden administration that followed -- are showing the Russians under Stalin, and the Soviets that followed -- as minor leaguers in the corruption game. To the gulag with you! It was an Occam's Razor election night. We that are not idiots, believed our lying eyes, when those states stopped counting -- hiding the counting from prying eyes, --and when they started up again, we had the result of massive fraud -- SloJo earned so many votes and went ahead of DJT, it was if a miracle happened. For Dems, the fucking cheaters they are.

This can be repeated until the cows come home, Democrats (and LLRs) will continue to lie about it. They're still claiming that Trump told people to drink/inject bleach, after all.

Of course there's no fraud. That's not the point. The point of disinformation and propaganda isn't necessarily to persuade; it's to create questions in people's minds. It's to sow doubt and cynicism and thereby make people more susceptible to demagoguery. It's a tactic authoritarian regimes have used for a hundred years, and it's working here with many Americans.

Isn’t it interesting that for all the decades-long claims of massive voter fraud conspiracies, not one person involved has “blown the whistle”, turned states evidence, asked for immunity or written a tell-all book exposing the conspirators?

@Gilbar I have Q : dead/alive/ breathing above/under ground?

here in Iowa, it's pretty hard for dead people to vote.. Like i said; we're a Red state.

Serious Question:
Can somebody produce a list of nations that allow mail in voting? and what type of mail in voting?
thanx!

here's Snopes.com
Mail-In Voting Is Banned in All These Countries?
In March 2024, internet users shared an image that accurately showed a list of countries where mail-in voting is banned: France, Mexico, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Ukraine, Russia, Japan, the Middle East and "Latin" countries.
Rating: Mixture

What's True
While most of these countries do not allow for resident citizens to vote by mail …

What's False
… many of them do include this voting method in their mix, in large part to accommodate their citizens abroad

So, let me Restate my Serious Question:
Can somebody produce a list of nations that allow mail in voting.. For people IN their country?

You Really HAVE TO admire Snopes.com
Something is a "mixture" of true and false.. meaning: It's TRUE, but we don't want to say that out loud

THINK how GLARINGLY TRUE something would have to be for Snopes.com to openly rule..
NOW! think about the fact that Snopes.com OPENLY said that our poor Chuck was A LIAR

@ Yancey Ward: My question was more rhetorical than not, but I do appreciate your response.

Minnesota which is often characterized as a blue state has a similar process/requirements for requesting a mail in ballot.

Instances of voter fraud are generally localized and do not typically affect the outcome of elections at the state or national level. The processes in place, such as voter registration, verification and ballot counting procedures, are designed to detect and prevent fraudulent activities.

"I have an interesting, clear, non-ideological, well-supported answer to your question. But I am sensitive to claims of taking comments pages off-topic. If Meade says it's okay, I'll happily give you the answer."

How is this off-topic? It's clearly not.

Well okay then, chief. Your word is clearly good enough for me.

The story begins immediately after the 2020 election. Trump had won Michigan in 2016 (by a mere 10,700 votes) and apparently some in the Trump Campaign expected Trump to win it again. But he lost, by a margin that was way outside of any reasonable recount. About 150,000 votes, in 2020.

But what happened in the frantic Trump effort to reverse the results, there was this kerfuffle with the Wayne County Board of Canvassers. While perhaps not likely at this point, I think it is entirely possible that Trump and Ronna Romney McDaniel might yet be both indicted in the affair.

More recently, the Delta County Board of Canvassers balked on certifying a state election, and was called out quite pointedly for their failure.

Michigan Democrats felt that this county board of canvassers fuckery had to stop.

There was another, unrelated, lesser-known affair which involved, among several other MI GOP figures, the 2022 failed, ultra-MAGA candidate for Attorney General, Matt DePerno. In a scheme too complicated to detail here, he managed to get actual voting machines from at least one County Clerk (Barry County, where an ultra-MAGA elected county sheriff, Dar Leaf, ruled) for some sort of "forensic inspection." Trump-national experts were going t try to discover some fatal defect in the machinery. A flock of rather old and previously uncontroversial election laws are alleged to have been broken by DePerno and company in the process. DePerno is now charged with multiple felonies and is awaiting trial.

Finally, one other election-related development; Michigan saw a whole flock of county and local clerks recieve threatening messages after 2020 and 2022.

Since then, with a Democratic Governor, and slim Democratic majorities in both the state house and senate, Michigan has seen several election law changes pressed forward into law.

Now, Original Mike; you asked about one of the Michigan election law changes, related to County Boards of Canvassers. It is true, that they will no longer be able to initiate investigations under the new law. In may experience, I cannot think of a time when any Board of Canvassers ever initiated any meaningful election investigations. It isn't, and never has been, what county Boards do. They aren't an investigative body, and possess no tools for any meaningful investigation. This, therefore, is a clarification of law. Investigations of election law compliance rest with county prosecutors and always have. While the Michigan GOP has actually made comments that there will no longer be any investigations of election law wrongdoing, that is in error. There can and presumably will be such investigations, just not by County Boards of Canvassers.

Quick review of Michigan law:
~ We have long had a photo i.d. requirement for in-person voting, that can only be waived by a signed affidavit and some other details too obscure for this post;
~ We have no-excuse absentee voting, thanks to a 2018 statewide referendum that passed easily, despite Republican opposition (and my "No" vote, lol);
~ We never had any early voting, but that is changing. That was yet another popularly-passed referendum vote, like the no-excuse absentee provision from 2018.

You're welcome. I'm very glad, Original Mike, that you felt so strongly that this is an essentially on-topic point.

In order to receive an absentee ballot, a registered voter MUST provide the following necessary information:
Name
Date of birth
"Iowa residential address
Voter Verification Number (ID Number)
Iowa Driver's License or Non-Operator ID Number OR
Four digit Voter PIN located on the voter's Iowa Voter ID Card
Any voter may request an Iowa Voter ID Card by contacting their County Auditor's Office
The name OR date of the election for which you are requesting an absentee ballot
Party affiliation - only required for Primary Elections, which are held in even numbered years
Signature and date the form was completed

THAT is what you need to provide.. In IOWA.

So, my question to all the people who claim there was no fraud in the 2020 election, would Iowa's method of absentee voting be a good model for absentee voting nationwide? Yea or nay- if nay, explain your objection.

Yancey Ward said...

The really funny thing is that voting by internet would be far easier to secure in today's world using encryption keys. Funny how the Democrats aren't pushing that, however.

Rusty said...

Pay close attention. You seem to be missing the point. Once you are registered to vote, you can vote. Sometimes all you need to do is go to the DMV and get a drivers license or a state ID. They will register you there. To prove you are who you say you are all you need are two pieces of identification telling them where you live. Two envelopes with your name and address are fine. There's your two AM ballot dump.
"Prove there was cheating" I just did.

Michigan
ID Needed for Voting
You do not need an ID to vote in Michigan. If you have a photo ID with you when you go to vote, you must show it. If you do not have a photo ID, or do not have one with you, you may sign an AFFIDAVIT OF VOTER NOT IN POSSESSION OF PICTURE IDENTIFICATION and vote a regular ballot that will be counted on Election Day.

So all I need to vote in Michigan is to fillout the online voter registration form and on election day show up in person and sign an affidavit.

I wonder how many illegal immigrants can use the same address before somebody notices. I bet a lot.

Yeah, he "advised" his boss orally that there was no fraud.

Did he file a written official report for the world to see the results of actual investigations leading to that conclusion?

Nope.

In Michigan
"House Bills 4983, 4984, 4985, and 4986 further expands Michigan’s automatic voter registration process. House Bill 4983requires the Secretary of State to register any person who applies for a license or ID card who is eligible to register to vote and to send that applicant a notice of registration with an instruction on how to decline that registration. "
https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/news/press-releases/2023/11/30/whitmer-signs-election-bills-to-ensure-every-vote-can-be-cast-and-counted

It says "who is eligible to vote." But the clerks at the DMV don't ask if you're eligible. That's the catch. They just register you and give you a government photo ID, a driver's licence, which has the same address as your voter registration. So you have a photo ID to show with the correct address. Then come the vote harvesters. Illegal aliens are not going to challenge anything these people do and in any case they merely fill in a form for which paper work exists.

It all goes back to that moment at the DMV when the clerk does not ask if you are eligible.

BTW, she gives you a form to fill out if you decline to be registered and so if you are caught voting - a felony - it falls on you for not filling out the decline form, not on them for signing you up.

Barr advised former President Trump that there was zero evidence of widespread fraud

This statement is tiresome in it's lack of addressing the problem and the way it's repeated ad nauseam by people who are not really interested in ballot integrity, only in shutting down the conversation. No one (AFAIK) has ever alleged there was "widespread fraud." In fact the problem was precisely that there were roughly a half-dozen densely populated Democrat controlled urban areas where the cheat machine is well-oiled. So why are these specific places not addressed? Because their poll-tested statement "no widespread fraud" is the Uniparty's way giving a non-responsive response.

The locales are not only Democrat controlled but have progressive judges who reliably issue prompt orders extending the vote if needed but delay any decision on illegal procedures until "ooops, sorry it's too late." Laches and lack of standing are their two favorite inquiry stifling maneuvers.

Everybody says they want fair elections. But everyone in power does everything they can to stop us from getting that. Now the fraud actually is "widespread" because illegals are being registered to vote in 49 states, which even by progressive math is a wide spread.
