"Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, last week dropped most of the 46 cases against pro-Palestinian demonstrators charged..."

"... in the April 30 siege of Hamilton Hall at Columbia University because prosecutors had little proof that the cases would stand up at trial. There was limited video footage of what took place inside the campus building.... The protesters wore masks and covered security cameras, preventing prosecutors from identifying those who had barricaded the doors and smashed chairs, desks and windows during the 17-hour occupation.... For similar reasons, prosecutors also dismissed charges against nine of the 22 students and staff members at City College who were arrested inside a campus building and charged with burglary during a protest that took place on the same night as the arrests at Hamilton Hall."

The NYT reports.

"Representative Jerrold Nadler, also a Democrat and the longest-serving Jewish member of the House of Representatives, said he had 'the uttermost faith in D.A. Bragg.'"

AND: What deep emotions stirred within Nadler that caused him to... utter... the strange word "uttermost"? My instinct was to regard it as not a word at all, but a whiffed attempt at "utmost." But I looked it up, and it's a word. The OED has it used by Hobbes ("From the uttermost parts of the Earth") and Milton ("To the uttermost convex Of this great Round") and Shelley ("From the corners uttermost Of the bounds of English coast") and Wordsworth ("A voice of uttermost joy") and Ruskin ("To speak with uttermost truth of expression") and Carlyle ("His accounts lie all ready, correct in black-on-white to the uttermost farthing"). Yes, I can answer my question "What deep emotions...?" The answer: the urge to bullshit.

I can pretty much guarantee Nadler did not get his use of the word 'uttermost' from reading Hobbes, Milton, or Wordsworth. He uttered that word simply by some food or air coming back up as he was speaking. And it came out...ut-TER-most.

In NYC, Jews are getting harassed and attacked in increasing fashion. In LA, only yesterday, Fans of Hamas surrounded a Synagogue and attacked Jews going in. This shit is getting worse by the week. And it'll keep going until there's a mass shooting or a fire started that kills multiple people.

But Alvin Bragg, continuing to make the world question just what it takes to get a position as an NY DA, sees the young Columbia 'students' (we don't actually think that they were all students) as a case with not enough actual evidence. This, from the guy who took an out-of-date misdemeanor, somehow made it a Federal charge, and grounded a Presidential candidate (and former President) for weeks in a show trial that is going to be overturned at some point. I don't think there's any doubt of that.

Just what is Alvin Bragg there for if not simply to have done what he did to Donald Trump? Crime in NYC is way up. People are getting pummeled in the streets. And...he's doing...what?

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

At long last those who predicted the dark nights of fascism were coming have been proven correct. Very sad days in America.

Paul Zrimsek म्हणाले...

What makes this particularly cute is that so many of the opinion pieces defending the Trump charges did so by making an analogy with burglary: if prosecutors can prove that you broke and entered, they can be as vague as they like about what crime you intended to commit once you got inside. Jamie म्हणाले...

Well, darn it, rehajm at 5:52, that was literally what I exclaimed when I read that line: "prosecutors had little proof that the cases would stand up at trial."

Temujin at 7:10 sums up most of the rest of what I came to say.

Except this: it is technically correct to say that prosecutors in New York "had little proof that the cases would stand up at trial," but it's probably more accurate to say "NY prosecutors were CERTAIN that the cases would NOT stand up at trial due to the nature of the Cause the accused were 'protesting.'"

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"I think that this is the most well known use of "uttermost." Psalm 139 King James Version."

I looked for other KJV uses of "uttermost." I liked: "

• "And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp." Numbers 11:1 (Note to self: Don't complain)

• "Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be." Deuteronomy 11:24 (territorial conquest by the soles of your feet)

• "Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession." Psalm 2:8

• "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings. The Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria." Isaiah 7:18

• "From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously. Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth." Isaiah 24:16

• "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing." Matthew 5:26 (Don't go to trial)

Really? First of all, he self-identifies as Jewish (no scare quotes needed). Second one of the oldest tropes in journalism is, when covering crimes against a specific ethnic or religious group (surprise Rich, Jews are both) to ask a Democrat from said group for comments on how the crimes are handled.

I'm surprised, as well fed as you are by Leftist news sources, that you have not noticed this standard journalistic habit on your own. Perhaps you have a blind spot regarding those people so that when they are treated like other ethnic and religious groups it stands out for you as somehow more meaningful. If any of America’s secular Jews are wondering whether they are still respected within the Democrats, this incident, coupled with the recent pummeling of a Jewish family at a fifth grade graduation and the attack on synagogue attendees in LA yesterday gives an unambiguous answer, f**k no!

The question is what they intend to do about it. (And, no, I don’t anticipate seeing lots of yarmulkes at Trump rallies.)

How many of the vandals who burned things down or stole from or grafittied public buildings during the BLM outbursts were prosecuted?

Do two wrongs make a right?

Why don't you ever give a peep when Catholic priests are assaulted and killed? Are some lives valued less in your book than others?

Answering your second question first, yes. People who are just minding their own business — attendees at a fifth grade graduation, maintenance workers at a university, devout people going to synagogue (or church) — are more deserving of protection than than people trying to assault people who are just minding their own business. Obviously. As to Catholic priests, I am unaware that they are assaulted and killed here in the United States. Have you a link?

What I find interesting, and why I responded to this post, is that as recently as two years ago if someone had asked whether, given that they had already thrown working class families out of their coalition, the Democrats could survive as a viable party without secular Jews,I’d have answered pretty strongly in the negative. Yet here we are. No one questions that Bragg made a political decision to drop the cases. So the bosses of the Democrat Party are right and I’m wrong, or I’m right and the Democrats are headed for permanent minority status. It’s fascinating.
