Writes Jeff Greenfield, in "Don’t Forget the Backlash to the ’60s/Today’s campus chaos carries a grim warning for Biden" (Politico).
२ मे, २०२४
"The backlash against the left was a key part of the 1968 presidential race. Richard Nixon famously ran a campaign on 'law and order'..."
"One commercial featured scenes of protest, as Nixon argued that 'in a system of government that provides for peaceful change, there is no cause that justifies a resort to violence.' Alabama Gov. George Wallace was a lot more direct that year in his third-party bid. While racism was at the heart of his message, he also denounced student protesters as 'silver spoon brats' who advocated 'treason' and said of protesters, 'Some of ’em lie down in front of my automobile, it’ll be the last thing they’ll ever wanna lie down in front of.'
The scenes of violence in Chicago outside the Democrats’ 1968 presidential convention, meanwhile, further contributed to the notion that left-wing lawlessness had gotten out of control. It was a nightmare event for Hubert Humphrey’s beleaguered presidential campaign, one where the public overwhelmingly sided with the Chicago police, not the demonstrators. (And, of course, guess where Democrats are holding their 2024 convention: Chicago.)... [I]n November of 1968, Nixon and Wallace combined for 57 percent of the vote...."

"Law and order" isn't a pleonasm. They're two different things.
Actually "Racism" was NOT at the heart of george wallace's campaign. That's just what his enemies, like Greenfield said at the time. And to compare a few college students acting up over Genocide in Palestine, to the violence at the Democrat Convention or the obnoxious out of control behavior of the SDS and the Yippies is absurd.
Greenfield, of course, has no understanding of why "Middle America" was so upset at the protesters in 68. Average Americans who were Veterans were upset at the waving VC and NV flags and support for Communists. They burned American flags, and were seens as spitting in the face of Americans who had loved ones fighting and dying in Vietnam. Many of the protesters were anti-American and Unpatriotic.
Today, we have people protesting the Genocide by a foreign country. Vast numbers of Americans either side with oppressed brown skined Gazans or feel we have no dog in this fight. So there will no backlash from the AMerican People. Any backlash will come from a small number of powerful Zionists.
I have been told so often I almost believe that Nixon’s law and order campaign was not about law and order; rather it was a dog whistle for racism.
SS [B]LM didn't hurt Democrats. As long as the bennies flow, the vote is gerrymandered, and public servants are not inconvenienced, the "burden"... uh, burden, will be lifted.
The crime was real. It was not racist to talk about it. The victims were primarily black-on-black, though black-on-white was rising rapidly too. So Greenfield denies the experience of countless black crime victims too. Jeff Greenfield joins the club of sleazy historical denialists, though I'm sure he's been a member for some time.
I can’t imagine Lori Laughlin did not bribe her kid into USC to tolerate this kind of chaos from the students who actually qualified to be there.
BLM worked in 2020 because of the pretense that Trump as President had something to do with the claimed systemic racism, although the issues seemed to be in deep blue cities.
Now Trump is being tried by the same DA's being soft on crime and now protesters. It has been months since Rep. Stefanik warned campus leaders. This won't stop hacks like gadfly from making BS claims, but only "educated elites" seem dumb enough to buy-in to the BS. Working class people know the real score.
I hated campus demonstrators back then and I hate em now. I was so looking forward to college, I would have skipped high school altogether, when the free speech demos started at Berkeley.
My first thought was that they were shitty students who wanted to get out of class. Turns out the ringleaders already had their degrees and had no qualms about derailing others.
I actually felt campuses were sacred. Lmao.
I just visited the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.
Highly recommended!
Today's hatred of Trump and the "get Trump" movement is very similar to what happened to Nixon. Nixon was vilified just like Trump. But at least the Left didn't try to jail Nixon.
And recall what the Watergate burglars did to what the Deep State did to Trump with the Russia hoax, FiSA abuse and the entire effort. What Nixon's people did was nothing compared to what Hillary's people did. And no Dem has ever been convicted of anything.
Duh?
I went to see Wallace in the summer of '68 when he appeared at the Midsouth Coliseum. His most memorable line was his critique of "pointy-headed sway-doe intellectuals who can't park a bicycle straight."
But I was too young to vote anyway.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who's very anti-Israel, is not likely to unloose the police against the protesters in the manner that Mayor Richard Daley did in 1968. This should make for an interesting comparison, assuming that the Hamas supporters are given relatively free reign and create mass chaos in the streets.
I'm really anxious for the DNC convention. It will be one of the few live 'things' I'm planning to watch and pay attention to. I can't wait to watch these narcissists kill and maim each other in the streets. The chaos is beyond well-deserved.
It could be history making...watching the death of the democratic party (at least in its present form).
The Democratic Party seems determined to party like it's 1968. Hopefully 2024 won't involve RFK being shot by a Palestinian terrorist, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out. And also, hopefully, the Dem dipshittery will result in a phenomenal landslide comeback by a Republican everyone had assumed was finished years ago.
I'm starting to rethink my convention prediction
Biden Tragically dies 1st night, Nation rallies around Moochelle; who wins with a 100 million vote count
i STILL think that will be the case, but Whether or No.. I think that:
a) there will be MASSIVE mostly peaceful protests; with HUNDREDS dead..
b) the Powers That Be will regretfully impose PERMANENT MARTIAL LAW on the Entire country
c) any and all vocal republicans will be arrested and or executed
and then, finally
d) the Nation rallies around Moochelle; who receives a vote "count" in the HUNDREDS of MILLIONS
e) good little conformists, like Professor Althouse will be "surprised" when the police come for THEM TOO
I don't remember 1968, but I do remember listening to the radio with my parents on Election Day 1972. (We had no TV). They were quite pleased with Nixon's devastating victory, and particularly happy that the filthy hippies and college-campus commies had been taught another harsh lesson. Hope to be able to share a similar bonding moment with my kids in November.
" 'in a system of government that provides for peaceful change, there is no cause that justifies a resort to violence.'"
Do we still have that system?
It's fine for Jeff Greenfield to point out to fellow dems the political downside of these so-called protests, but the risk that they'll be a real turn-off for moderates in November seems kind of obvious. A better topic for Jeff to address would be why the people behind the protests decided to launch them at all -- what's the purpose? It can't be to try to improve conditions for the people of Gaza. Anybody who truly cared about them surely would come up with a better, more direct approach than to orchestrate protests at American colleges in support of Hamas.
What this looks like to me is a not-so-subtle reminder to the dem establishment that the dark forces of the international left are in charge and they better not ever forget it. It's saying, "We can do this anywhere, any time, over any issue." So, yes, this will hurt Biden's reelection chances, but that's kind of the point, i.e., that the rich anarchists behind all of this have that power at their disposal.
Well, if the wayback machine is set today to ol’ Tricky Dick in ‘68, let’s tune in to Detective Sergeant Friday on “Dragnet” giving a tongue-lashing to some protesters (who are wearing the hippest duds imaginable). This aired in March of ‘68, two months after the bloody battle for Hue City in Viet Nam and near the start of Nixon’s “law ‘n order” table-pounding. Sergeant Friday’s speech is a harbinger of the coalescing Zeitgeist to rein in the left and get out of Viet Nam -- and which put Nixon in the White House.

As if.
"Silver spoon brats" sounds about right for current events.
One can only hope...
Don't forget Nixon won more votes than any previous president. Don't forget Nixon told his CIA chief he "knew why" Kennedy was assassinated. Don't forget the deep state CIAFBI took Nixon out shortly after he was reelected, but at least gave him the option of resigning instead of dying. And finally, don't forget the deep state CIAFBI did the bidding of Democrats from 2015 until now to hamper, smear, impeach, destroy, bankrupt and beat Trump and he still in 2020 won more votes than any previous president running for reelection, and the deep state CIAFBI will probably keep doing the same shit relentlessly for the next five years.
The pendulum will swing.
You leftists and regime toadies have been pushing it up for decades. Now it will go back to the other side.
You can still get out of the way. But you will not retain power. We will be free of your bullying and crap one way or another.
The political boomerang effect brings a new model of governance.
Can they even have a convention? It's going to be pandemonium.
It will be strange if the Dems more or less give Trump the presidency. Of course, it doesn't follow that either the House or Senate will follow Trump; they didn't follow Nixon. They may impeach Trump and remove him from office.
1. Biden is sticking to open borders, with a half-hearted lie that he really wanted to do something, but the Republicans wouldn't pass a bill. He has opened the border by executive action, and he can close it, or greatly reduce the intake, by executive action. He has made it clear he has no intention of doing so, and his action or inaction is very unpopular. Maybe he (or whoever is both sane and in charge) thinks he is building a lasting coalition for the Dem party; maybe he believes Western civilization should be drastically changed, if not destroyed.
2. Israel is more of a problem for the Dems than the Republicans. Biden could lose Michigan, for example, with its large Muslim population, even if they simply abstain rather than go to Trump. Biden could be losing a lot of students and recent college graduates by way of the recent protests, backlash, etc.
3. Abortion may favor the Dems in both Florida and Arizona, and it obviously has some effect nation-wide. Given Trump's statesmanlike or Stephen Douglas view that now is not the time for moral absolutes, how much does the abortion issue hurt him? Is there any other single issue that really favors Biden? How many people both give a shit about Ukraine, and think there is something positive about what Biden has done?
4. Neo-cons always think it's 1938, and they want Chamberlain to suffer more this time. Maybe it's 1914, and people are trying to get us to wage a world war over Serbia. Not a very good idea. WW I did a lot to get the U.S. out of isolationism (which somehow included taking the Philippines), but this was both good and bad.
5. I still think Biden might impose a draft on a fairly selective group before the election. Perhaps a group that is still young, and recently performed military service so they have some training. Rather than send draftees straight to the war zone as in MASH, the idea might be to send active-duty volunteers, who have signed their asses away, and then backfill them with draftees. Patriotism and unity, perhaps the Bush Jr. phrase "homeland security," very few body bags (one hopes), talk about getting the enemy to the negotiating table a la Vietnam. There's already some talk of the body count.
There's a lot to be said for Bobby K.
I learned at the Nixon Library that he signed Title IX into law. And now the Left and Biden are trying to destroy it.
All you have to do is watch his staff now block the view of him stumbling to and fro....to see not all is well with Old Dementia Joe. He will be traded out for a new version of Fundamental Change at this convention, and in order to make the pro-Hamas crowd happy, they will need to nominate a Squad member.

I have been thinking that there have to be tons of normal people (unlike me) out there for whom politics are not the driving force, and who see this 60s-ish breakdown of order, are turned off by it, and will likely veer away from the Democrats, particularly after the shit-who that the Dem Convention seems certain to be.
Buckle up, buckaroos!
“It’s just this war snd that lying son of a bitch, Biden!”
Can't wait for the riots.
Chicago is really messed up, but this summer it's going to be literally lit.
Stocking up on popcorn...
I found it
"Considering the cult of the Kill from Veblen’s angle of vision, we can also get a glimpse of its earlier relation to social hierarchy. Hunting was thus not merely the insignia of privilege; it did reverence to the principle of order. (For though we tend to think of “law and order” as a pleonasm, like “house and home” or “day and time,” the second word refers not merely to regulation, but to hierarchy. A genuine “new order” is a new social ladder.)"

'Actually "Racism" was NOT at the heart of george wallace's campaign.'
Wallace was a democrat and democrats are racist by nature, so in a way it was...
'Turns out the ringleaders already had their degrees and had no qualms about derailing others.'
Know as 'Doing a Rapinoe.'
Get yours and fuck everybody else : )
Megan McArdle was claiming yesterday on Twitter that "protesters won't get anywhere near teh convention".
To which the correct response was: they don't have to get near teh convention site. The Chicago riots in 1968 weren't at the convention site, either.
There are two major questions:
1: How far will the MSM and all non-Twitter "social media" go to suppress all public mention of unrest in Chicago during the DNC
2: Will they be successful?
Because Twitter will carry it, Fox will carry it, and you know the BLM / Antifa / Jihad crowd will NOT let the "Chicago DNC Convention" go by without getting their own words in
So, how do the dems triangulate this summer? They've got the far left about to go on a rampage, one sect protesting against Jews/Israel who also hate Joe Biden and the other sect trying to terrorize the voting populace against Trump.
I think it opens up a major schism in the left. Throw RFKJr. in the mix and a not-insignificant cohort of dems who just don't understand what is going on with their party will peel off and vote for him; self-affirming, pointless gestures being de riguer for them folks. Voila, another split. Who is the Biden base now, I mean other than the dead, the American-hating, and the kneejerks?
It just looks like the dems have a lot of holes in their boat. They need to patch up the college-kids, get blacks and latinxyzs back on course, tighten down the cargo by mollifying the anti-war element while underwriting two unpopular wars, convince a majority of the populace that inflation is a good thing... and stagflation is even more gooder, and find a way to convince the passengers that the captain is competent.
Tough reach.
Or they could just go with their strengths and cheat harder and deeper.

P.S. I'd love to see someone start a 'Draft Bernie' write-in movement. Have Peter Thiel fund it.
I read the article. So Greenfield is concerned about Biden’s Presidential prospects. It’s just another day ending in “y” for our state run media. Also, Republicans pounce.
I can’t believe a human being is actually being paid to produce this drivel. It’s enough to make me long for the day when Democrat propaganda is generated by AI instead of overpaid, predictable morons. The output will be just as bad but I’ll enjoy the thought that fewer clowns like Greenfield are financially benefiting from it.
In the time of the Influencers, for the wannabe Influencers, Palestine is a gift from what is left of legacy media.
The symbiosis is kind of romantic actually. They found each other in the nick of time.
Everything with the modern left is optics and narratives.
ZERO actual caring. NO authenticity at all.... Just optics.
Bill Maher laid it all out the other day when he said "at least until after the election."
Greenfield is still alive?
Authentic backlashes can be squished with Chicago mob / leftist cheating.
It's not surprising that Donald Trump's criticism of Israel earlier this month is what sparked all of these Hamas supporting protest groups across college campuses.
Another great political move by the stable genius.
We Republicans have been Pouncing since before you kids were born.
I think the fear of a November backlash is why colleges are starting to rein in some of these campus protests. It's almost like they are getting marching orders from some mysterious powerful force. I wonder who that could be....
There's probably a cave painting somewhere showing Republicans pouncing.
>> The pendulum will swing.
The beauty of the American political system is that it is self-correcting. Or at least it was.
Unverified mail-in voting, packing states with illegals to gain a census advantage for the House and electoral college, no ID in person voting, and ballot harvesting have ripped away the legitimacy of our elections. The D's want to make the US like California... a one-party state where you get to vote for the Democrat of your choice.
Add in that the D's control the counting in Atlanta, Philly, Detroit, Phoenix, and Milwaukee. It's impossible for any R to win while losing GA, PA, MI, AZ, and WI.
If Biden is still in the race on election day, he wins.
>>'Actually "Racism" was NOT at the heart of george wallace's campaign.'
You can't be serious.
George Wallace was the poster child for Southern racism and segregation by race. He literally stood in the schoolhouse door to block the admission of black students.
Wallace was a national figure because of his racism. He had actual KKK members on his staff. To say that racism was not at the heart of his campaign is... unsupported by the facts.
"Who is the Biden base now, I mean other than the dead, the American-hating, and the kneejerks?"
In 'The Era Of Fake Ballots' (<- you are here), how important *is* a base, anyway? I mean- aside from helping to know how many more votes it will be necessary to "find"?
Aside from the Professional Protesters that wander the country from crisis to controversy seeking The Most Sincere Campus for the Great Revolution to break out, how many actual students are involved in this? And on a per capita for each school.
The reaction period to the Jane Fonda 1968's were great years to be an American (killed California though.) Carter admin was a muddled pseudo intellectual pseudo moral time (Georgia has not picked good governors since before the Civil War.) Regan adjusted Carter's misunderstanding of reality. The deep state won in the Bush Clinton Bush Uni-party years.
Never elect a close family member of the President to the Presidency. Forget Adams. That should have been outlawed by the founders, like royal families.
I predicted a while back that Michelle would be selected for the Donks in September. If Beiden is still alive, I now don't think so. I think the donks will tough it out with Brandon. But if Joey dies of "MERSA" She will be right in there with Mamalallla as VP.
I say this because Oct 7 has changed the level of tolerance for candidates who put Iran and Hamas over Israel. Feel good words and campus upset are not convincing anyone, and Obama won't want to be held responsible for Beidenomics.
Even though Powell can't see the "stag" and the "flation", everyone else does.
My dad told me he voted for Wallace.
Vast numbers of Americans either side with oppressed brown skined Gazans or feel we have no dog in this fight.
There is, of course, a third option that I suspect is by far the most popular view in America - that we should side with our long-time ally in their fight against a group that slaughtered women and children and videotaped the whole thing for their enjoyment.
Also, Palestinians are not "brown-skined[sic]."
Damn, Howard is getting desperate.

The people screeching about Anti-semitism are generally terrible. Pretending the Israeli's are the "good" guys is wrong.
But Jordan has killed more Palestinians than Israel by an order of magnitude for a reason. Everyone kills Palestinians. Egypt built an epic wall to keep them out. The Palestinians are the problem in the area and every country and tribe agrees on that except the Iranian Regime who use them as catspaws.
The solution to the Palestinian problem is the same as the one being currently carried out in Niger or Somalia or several other countries around the world. They are incompatible with everyone in the area and need to be dissolved as a tribe. The men defeated and forced to surrender and the women and children absorbed into local communities where they are raised to be decent people that adhere to the rules of the local social contract.
The Palestinians have made it clear it is either the they are defeated or destruction of Israel and the Jewish people.
There is no right or wrong. It just is.
Ever stand on the beach with waves washing the sand out from under your feet? That's my image of the political situation. Again and again the waves come in [antisemitism, wars, inflation, Afghanistan, political show trials]; more and more the ground is washing out from under the Dems. But how will it all play out in the election? I don't think anyone knows. Biden will look more and more senile; massive cheating might be the plan. But it's all unknown territory. To me, the decisive event will be the Dems cutting down the main tent beam of their party's big tent. This main beam is its Jewish support. If the Dems actually repudiate the Jews, openly or virtually, the Dems will lose. I'm not talking about some weird money power; it's the work: the drive, the ideas and the organization - and then the money swings in behind all that. Nothing will replace that vigor.
It's not surprising that Donald Trump's criticism of Israel earlier this month is what sparked all of these Hamas supporting protest groups across college campuses.
Good parody - or as you like to call it 'sarcasm' - shouldn't be so obvious.
I don't think there will be any significant unrest in Chicago for the Democrat convention. The power brokers are well aware of 68 too.
And Time revealed that all of these "rent a mobs" are controlled by the powers that be. There's no real grassroots "Let's kill the Jews!" going on out there; it's all a professional, top down organized thing. And I doubt that group wants to riot and elect Trump... so they won't do anything during the DNC convention.
More likely they act up in Milwaukee during Trump's convention and try to kill him and as many Republicans as they can. It was violent at the 2016 convention too, after all.
Over-compensating Non-combat "vet" Howitzer Howard: "It's not surprising that Donald Trump's criticism of Israel earlier this month is what sparked all of these Hamas supporting protest groups across college campuses.

Do you recall what you did little man?
Like Sir Robin, when confronted you "turned your tail and fled, Brave Brave Brave Brave Sir Howard".

Nixon ran on and won on stopping the Viet Nam debacle. Law and order was a code word for Nixon honoring the soldiers being killed in the crazy war for no reason at all except LBJ being ordered to do it by the CIA.
Yes, we have found the secret. The only thing that matters in the selection of our President is Atlanta, Philly, Detroit, Phoenix, and Milwaukee. These localities need to be sure to add enough ballots to tip the scale. They are in control of the presidency.
If Repubs are serious, they will pay big to have lawyers and observers only in the small number of counties that will decide the election. Also having high turnout effort in states that have blue metros in agg states, like all.
Vance: "More likely they act up in Milwaukee during Trump's convention and try to kill him and as many Republicans as they can. It was violent at the 2016 convention too, after all."
Given how many elected "republicans" are actually democraticals in terms of policy preference or simply controlled opposition, the New Soviet Democraticals will need to be judicious in who they attack.
Drago,
don't set the bar too high for Howard. Besides, cucks like to be humiliated... so you are just fueling his masturbatory fantasies. He already stated in a previous posting that he just throws out nonsense to enrage people. Makes him a great person, eh?
If you ask yourself 'how would one demonstrate total noncomprehension of the subject matter without saying they don't understand the subject matter' before reading any of Howard's eructions, you'll find it helps.

I'm going to veer into tin foil hat territory here. I've been thinking for several months now that there's a small possibility that this is exactly what the Dems are doing. If they think the country is fkd up beyond repair for a one term President why would they want a Dem in the WH? Especially someone who's only going to make it worse. Let Trump take the fall. There's always the risk that things might get better under Trump, but they'll undermine him at every turn to make sure that doesn't happen. /tinfoilhatoff

2 things:

2) Howitzer Howie lacks the firepower to enrage anyone

Sorry, chump, but Gaza has more than 2 million people, and even if you use Hamas's wildly inflated figures, 30,000 have died in urban fighting.
that works out to about 1.5 PERCENT deaths, an awfully long way from a "genocide".
And let's face it: if Israel really wanted to kill all the Palestinians it would take only a couple of nukes, which everyone knows they have, to utterly destroy Gaza and everyone in it.
I'd call you just another bed-wetter, but your refusal to admit you want all Israelis to be kicked out of Israel marks you as a obsessive Jew hater.
Why not fess up and be done with it?
The protestors had the writers, who are tasked with selling the lie. Of course, after the Chicago Convention, Walter Cronkite sold the fake news that the Tet Offensive was a loss for American troops in the field.
“During the Vietnam War... every respectable artist in this country was against the war. It was like a laser beam. We were all aimed in the same direction. The power of this weapon turns out to be that of a custard pie dropped from a stepladder six feet high.”

My theory is this: None of this is really planned at a central location, esp now, with the FJB WH being essentially rudderless. There are supposedly two big power factions in the FJB WH: Clintonistas and Obamaites. The coddling of Iran and Islamophilia are the Obamaites. Much of the anti-Israel/antisemitic violence is apparently being funded by billionaires, notably including George Soros. (Many of the Hamas protesters are apparently professionals, paid to show up at protests, and bussed or flown around the country to do that - we saw them at the AntiFA/BLM riots and as instigators at the J6 “insurrection”). They don’t limit themselves to this, of course - they fund a lot of anti-American initiates too. It’s hard for the Dems to distance themselves from them, because they were instrumental in winning the 2020 election. They provided huge amounts of dark money, and much of that went into facilitating election fraud. Expect that this time around too. As to this topic, there is a lot of Arab petro-money involved too. For the most part, these radical billionaires don’t take orders from the FJB WH and DNC, but rather just suggestions.
Jews have long been relatively safe in the Dem party, despite notably antisemitic other factions there too - notably Blacks and the KKK. the y are rich, smart, talented, and, until now, strongly dedicated to the Dem party. As a result, they have had an outsized representation in Dem party politics. They have consistently contributed roughly 10% of both houses of Congress, including, now, the Senate Majority Leader. They are no longer safe there. I expect that it is partially that there are now, in recent years, about as many Muslims in this country, as well as all that dark billionaire and Arab petroleum-money flowing in. We can probably see that with the colleges and universities right now, with a lot of foreign Muslims attending these schools paying full fare, and big Jewish donors waking up and realizing that the schools they have been giving Billions to have become radically antisemitic.
I think that Dem party leaders would probably like a peaceful convention this year. I don’t think that they are going to get it. The apparent goal of these dark money billionaires is to destroy this country from the inside. Burning Chicago this year would probably help their cause more than hurt it. So, I expect the Chicago and IL officials to half heartedly try to control the violence, while Garland’s DOJ sits on the side, spending their time and energy prosecuting J6 protesters, as well any jurisdiction trying to enforce voting laws, and forcing states to allow illegals to enroll and vote.
Even Paul Harvey publicly encouraged Nixon to end the Vietnam War.
The convention doesn't matter, just like Joe's senescence doesn't matter and any issue you name doesn't matter. The only thing that matters in this election is selective harvesting of universal mail in ballots by each party, and maybe some vote counting done late at night in locked rooms. Other than that, nothing matters this election.
I'm ignoring the whole mess until a week after election day. Saves a lot of time and effort.

"There is no right or wrong"? Because stopping genocide of Jews isn't "right",and wanting to genocide all the Jews isn't "wrong"?
You are seriously fucked up

"Today, we have people protesting the Genocide by a foreign country."
Get back to us when Israel starts building gas chambers.
