I've never seen the value in diamonds. Never understood the value in a Louis Vuitton bag, or expensive tennis shoes. Cars...maybe... Now even a prestigious college diploma in in question.
Diamonds as the traditional wedding rock become even more ridiculous when couples get "upgrades" to show they now have more money. Rather than wear the ring and the diamond placed on the finger at the alter in from of God, family and friends, upgrade couples just want to wear their fake wealth on the outside.
Jewelers tell young men to spend two or three months salary on a stupid rock. And of course the calculate that on gross income. So if a young man is making 60K he is supposed to spend $10K to $15K on a ring.
It's much like the McMansion boom in the early 2000s before the crash. People were borrowing money to buy houses that made them look rich, when in fact they didn't have shit.
The kid knew his father was lying and that's that. The little boy didn't quite understand why his father was lying but understood it had something to do with his dad's ego and as a pal ('dude') he was expected to protect his father's ego. I'm impressed that the kid was not willing to be gaslit. Of course the mother, the "woman" is assumed to not have a mind of her own. She was wise enough to stay out of a no-win situation.

At such a young age, he recognized the diamond as little and wasn't satisfied with the answer that it was big enough. Very profound.
Tick tock, the mouse ran up the clock.
did 'dad' give 'mom' diamond in the parable of the girl with 2 dads earlier?

The black rock, the color of a gray rock, weather worn.
