Sounds crazy to the ear, but the reasoning is no different than for any other grievance group.
The sidewalks near me are covered in dog crap all the time from irresponsible owners, so I agree with the conclusion. This may be the only topic on which I have ever agreed with "woke activists".

The left getting outraged at fellow lefties who think 'their' dogs are special and can 'roam free' and why don't you just chill! Same down this way, too. Leash, not me! Dealing with solipsistic lefties gets tiresome real quick. It would be fun to ask the outraged one what the 'allotted space' for people in his neighborhood is and, of course, "who, whom" might be good to ask too.
Is settler-colonial a type of dog breed?
I don't think people should have dogs off leash in public areas. People should have their dogs under their control at all times, so not dogs that are too big for their owner to control even on a leash. If you want a big dog that's stronger than you, make sure it is trained to obey commands.
Is having a dog different from having an above average number of children? They fill up community spaces. I'm hoping they don't shit on the street.
If "settler-colonial" applies to dogs, then it applies to illegal immigrants (or criminal aliens, take your pick) with several orders of magnitude.
There are plenty of dogs in my area but I see neither dog shit nor their owners picking up.

I go to Central Park a lot. The dogs are sometimes let off leash there. It's a squirrel rich environment and the dogs are ecstatic to be in such a paradise. Unlike cats, dogs aren't all that smart about stalking their prey. The squirrels run to a tree and the dogs run round and round the tree as fast as they can. It's very entertaining to watch. Not as much fun as watching toddlers learn to play soccer, but it's definitely entertaining.....Unless you're a squirrel, you've really got to work at it to be offended by the behavior of dogs.
What about dogs in small cities? Or in large cities the size of small cities?

Every urban area I've lived in is full of pit bulls, many of the sweet guys intentionally made violent by their owners, who resist both fixing their pits for free or demand fake testicles be inserted (yes, that's a thing). To pay off my vet bills, I did repair work for a 90-year old vet near MLK's childhood home. He kept the place open mainly to help out old ladies keeping dogs for protection and to try to talk young idiots into fixing their pits and giving them rabies shots. He was Christian and did this as pro-bono work. He had a real office in the country.
I assume these aren't the settler dogs being criticized. So if an Irish Setter owned by a DINK is a colonial-settler, these pits must be GAZA militia. Nice to see these neighborhood micro-newspapers are really fulfilling their stated mission to spread comity and goodwill.
There is a famous passage in Peter Singer, the "animal rights" guy. What if there is a confrontation between a rat and a human baby? Do we have any reason to prefer the victory of either of these over the other? Now the woke: rats have proliferated because of the way humans have proliferated. If you eliminate the host, itself a big parasite, you eliminate the lesser parasite.

We have friends who moved to Switzerland and brought their 8-year-old dog with them. They were required (as are all dog owners in Switzerland) to take their dog through an 8 or 10 week training course to be allowed to bring/keep it.
Swiss law allows dogs pretty much every place a human can go - stores, restaurants, etc. - and I never saw a single issue, because all the dogs are trained.

Am I the only person in this comment thread to think this entire issue is just a bit too close for comfort to Maoists denouncing pet ownership? As recently as 2014, the Chinese government did the same thing again, denouncing pet ownership, especially imports of animals from outside China as pets. As one who grew up trained that "The only good Red is a dead one," (Nazis were dead already during that time, but would have been treated exactly the same) I am having to restrain impulses to conflate this story with tales I heard from Chinese emigrant refugees as a youth.
Dang. So much going on, and on top of it all now I have to go out and buy a bunch of dogs.

You know how bicyclists, insisting on bike lanes on streets where you NEVER see anyone riding a bicycle, make an incredible amount of obnoxious, loud, insistent, and self-righteous noise but always turn out to be a microscopic minority--as evidenced by the eternally empty bike lanes?
And you know how vegans just cannot bring themselves to shut up about being vegans very much in the same way that bicyclists cannot get through a conversation without dropping in the fact that they bicycle / have a 'special' diet?
Hypothesis: People who dislike dogs and constantly complain about dogs are also a tiny minority that manages to 'garner' disproportionate attention by being loud, obnoxious, self-righteous, and insistent.*
Indeed, it seems possible that these are all the same people.
If we manage to survive our current era of malicious incompetence, we are going to have to find more effective ways of ignoring loud, monomaniacal minorities who skew public debate towards their dumb ideas.
*You know who is almost as bad as the pathetic dog-haters? The dog-owners who don't pick up their pets' crap, or who don't train their dogs, or who take them off leash in inappropriate situations. None of this stuff is a particular burden.
P.S.: I'm surprised that the talking-point-readers of the world seem to have settled on "settler-colonialist" as the new "fascist" (i.e., generic all-purpose insult that flags the person using it as stupid). If "settler-colonialist" is bad, I assume everyone who has immigrated to the U.S. in the past what? 20? 50? 100? years is going to have to "de-settle" and "de-colonize." Why, then, are we flying in hordes of new settler-colonialists? Inquiring minds want to know.
