"What’s next for Sinema after her Senate term runs out this year?... A vanity presidential campaign from corporate-backed No Labels...?"

That's a quote from an article I found when I was looking for discussion of whether Kyrsten Sinema will be the No Labels candidate for President.

It's in The New Republic and, for the most part, it's not the sort of thing I was looking for, as indicated by the really inflammatory headline: "Kyrsten Sinema Is Resigning in the Most Sinema Fashion Ever (Delusional)/Farewell to the 'independent' Arizona senator who did nothing but screw over all her constituents, along with the rest of the country."

Porn. She'd be great. Bi-sexual lesbian milf porn is hot right now. She could even "screw over all her constituents". Bi people aren't known to be too picky.

I used to subscribe to the New Republic, back in the 80's. It was a Democrat Party organ and reliably left-liberal, but very high quality writing. As I recall, most of the best editors were ousted in woke struggle sessions, and then the rag was sold to be some rich asshole's wife's plaything. Have I got that right? Who's holding the leash at TNR these days?

"screw over all her constituents, along with the rest of the country."

How's that for progspeak: anything short of 100% prog 24/7 is "screwing over" constituents and country.

she voted for the socalled Inflation reduction act, that was her price, she didn't vote for HR !, that is the betrayal

Amazing how McCain was lauded as an independent "Maveric" when he thwarted Republican policies but when Sinema and Manchin do the same to Democratic policies they "screw over all her constituents, along with the rest of the country."

The New Republic is a leftist rag. I wrote asking why they were organising tours to an authoritarian one party state (Cuba). Response - I don't get emails offering such tours any more.

The New Republic, known as the inflight magazine of Air Force One. Easy to criticize, but what kind of headline would you write to grab Brandon's attention? At their present rate of mutual decline, I wouldn't rule out TNR hiring Crumb to portray Sinema literally screwing every registered Arizona voter.

I think she should be a fashion model. Seriously!

I love her fashion sense. She can be the next Maye Musk.

Even 110% prog 24/7 will be redefined as "screwing over" constituents and country.

That's how they get more prog.

I am SO OLD that I can remember when The New Republic was a serious publication.

According to fivethirtyeight, Sinema votes in line with Biden 93.9% of the time. Which means, of course, that she's an ultra MAGA running dog capitalist roader imperialist reactionary.

Trumps vice presidential candidate? She'd be better than Tulsi....or Kristi.... (just spitballing)

Eh, she'd be better than a lot of so-called Republicans, but Kristi Noem? No way. Noem showed real guts during Covid and is a reliable conservative who will never support disarmament of the public.

I admired Sinema's independence, and was planning to hold my nose and cast a tactical vote for her this year if it became obvious that Kari Lake had no hope of beating Gallego. However, I do not trust her on Second Amendment issues enough to support her as my favored VP or Presidential candidate.

Tulsi Gabbard falls into the same category. Says a lot of things appealing to the old Tea Partier in me, but has been a reliable vote for gun control.

That is my pons asinorum, so to speak. Not my single issue, but my deal-breaker. Necessary, but not sufficient. Any politician who does not think the public should be allowed to possess weapons comparable to those issued to police and individual infantrymen is an enemy of freedom and should be run out of any position of power or public trust.

Althouse writes "[It's] not the sort of thing I was looking for, as indicated by the really inflammatory headline..."

Not much less inflammatory than some of Kyrsten Sinema's own descriptions of herself, e.g. "a Prada socialist". What could she have meant by that? Given the sad and blood-drenched history of socialism wasn't that itself sufficient to inflame suspicions regarding her moral probity, but to narrow her socialism to what, to Prada? Prada, the summit of capitalism as a social evil? Capitalism is good when it delivers useful products, manufactured by workers earning a fair wage, and sold at fair prices, but since when has Prada been an exemplar of those virtues?** I'm evil and stupid! is the only non-nonsensical interpretation I can glean from "Prada socialist" as a self-descriptor.

**Imagine buying a pair of sunglasses, not prescription, just off-the-shelf made-in-China, for $629 and having the Prada branding prominently displayed across the bridge of your nose. Who would do that? No one with an inkling of the works of Marx, not Karl. Harpo, maybe.

But The New Republic? Really?

At least you remarked the headline is inflammatory..

All that said I don't see much in the future for Senator S. The market for conservatives that leave the reservation appears much broader than for liberals.

@Quaestor, and here I thought she was calling herself “a Pravda Socialist.”

Temujin म्हणाले...

I, for one, will miss her in there. I'd forgotten what a Senator with some balls looked like. I most certainly did not agree with many of her stances, but I loved her independence and ability to look at the entire situation before pulling a knee-jerk vote for 'Our Team'. She sometimes let her team know that they were full of shit. Which shouldn't be so hard and should not be such a rare occurance, but is.

She is her own woman. This is what an independent, strong woman looks like. AOC, on the other hand, is a clone and could be any other sophomore in high school as far as I'm concerned.

I wish we had a much larger percentage of 'unreliable' votes on both sides of the aisle. That said, we don't. So we have to find a way toward term limits. Otherwise your vote is an exercise at best.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Althouse, with respect, Madam, if you keep reading TNR you’re going to lose serious IQ points. Read it enough and your IQ won’t just descend into double digits, but the first digit won’t even be a 9.

The Democrats definitely fear her running on the "No Labels"- this was the pre-emptive attack, though these idiots don't understand that this sort of vitriol acts against their interest- making it more likely this is exactly what Sinema does. Sinema's real crime was opposing the elimination of the filibuster that stopped the stuffing of SCOTUS with Larry Tribe clones and making mail-in-vote fraud a nationwide process.

And, I remember another Senator from Arizona who was a partial maverick against his party and was toasted by The New Republic and other lefty fallatrices as being bold by listening to all of his constituents.

Maxim is all lgbtmnop all the time now, so it is still a thing as long as you use its pronouns thing/things properly. It also means a Sinema-Spread is possible. She's bi-sexual AND a former US Senator. If they buy her she'll get sexual. Many such cases!

Good news for Gallego and bad news for Kari Lake. Sanity versus chaos.

Sinema was elected as a Democrat then became an Independent. She would have not been elected as an Independent.

Compare her to Joe Manchin. I always knew where he stood and what somebody would have to do to strike a deal with him. Whenever Biden was able to meet Manchin’s demands, Manchin would vote for the bill because at the end of the day, Manchin wanted to get things done.

Sinema literally would never say what she wanted. Nobody could figure it out. Sometimes she blatantly changed her mind when it became clear her demands would be met. It’s one thing to be conservative. It’s another to just be playing Calvin-ball.

Arizona is kind of a purple state, and it's trend over the past couple decades seems to be going blue-ward. While it isn't as unwise as Democrats who were upset with Joe Manchin, or Republican who are upset with Susan Collins, at some point in politics you need to differentiate between the possible and the reasonably likely. Sinema was a very largely reliable vote for Democrats. Perhaps Sinema would have rerun and maybe not even left the Democrat party of Democrats were a little more open to moderation. I wonder how many Democrats saying good riddance now, will think regret that if Kari Lake wins.

In the beginning I thought Sinema was a scary, out of control lefty. Turns out she had a lot more character than anyone gave her credit for. Damn shame that gets driven out of our politics. (see also Tulsi Gabbard.)

So stupid...or simply just lying thru your teeth again.

Perhaps an "and" is a better fit here.

Gallego is a full blown marxist. His lunatic left supporters, like you, were already locked in for him and he could only count on pulling in a small % of marxist-curious young university psycho women.

Sinema posed a more interesting problem for Lake given her ability to draw moderate women...which is now gone.

And given the AZ list of voter concerns which mirrors the nation as a whole, that will be a problem for Gallego.

So what can the dems count on in AZ?

Mailing out about 1.5 million extra mail in ballots, no voter ID, no signature checks, no chain of custody, and a corrupted state leadership that stole the last election and a Federal govt apparatus that is weaponized to jail challengers.

New Soviet Democraticals.

Arizona people, even Phoenix people, will tell you there is less crime because everyone has guns. They don’t like crime there. They know from grandad that guns keep you from being a victim. The baddies can steal in CA and spend the loot in AZ. Fine, leave the AZ pistolleros alone. Don’t steal from them.

If the GOP was smart - Bwahaaahaaa - they'd package all these snarky attacks on Sinema into a TV ad to aim at any Dem running as a pretend-moderate this November; eg Jon Tester in Montana and the Dem North Carolina Governor candidate whose name escapes me.

The theme of the ad -

"[eg Tester] is no moderate. This is what Democrats say about an actual moderate."
