Now, in a republican form of government, one can only become a member of the governing elite by being elected. Rich, are you Uber-Trolling us? It seems pretty clear that you took someone's account of the SOTU fiasco, and substituted "Trump" wherever "F. Joe Biden" appeared.

By the way, it should be "let alone", not "let on". Cut-and-paste is like spell-check. It can make life easier, but it can also make you look lie a complete ass. Complete.

mikee said...: Over the past four years I've supported my wife in her efforts to insure proper care for her elderly mother, suffering from dementia and the inept and/or negligent "care" of my wife's siblings. A severe lack of planning on my MIL's part led to a need for intervention in her "care" by my wife's siblings. This involved a suit to regain guardianship from the sibs, who surreptitiously changed the previously assigned guardianship from my wife, a physician, to themselves, greed driven idiots. It also involved court ordered, semimonthly telecons with her siblings, which were little more than an opportunity for their acrimonious and vile bleatings against her attempts to improve her mother's care as dementia overcame the old lady. It wasn't enjoyable, and not just because of the old lady's decline over the years before her death. My MIL died last spring, and after further sibling shenanigans - skimming a few tens of thousands of dollars for themselves without accounting for it - the estate was eventually settled. The amount each sibling received from the estate was not life changing. My wife paid down some of our kid's student loans and passed on some to our kids as a gift from their grandparent. The silence ever since from the sibs, who maintain burning hatred for my wife's opposition to their bad care of their own mother, has been delightful.

This month, I started working with my own mother, not yet suffering dementia but frail in her elder years, on her guardianship issues. One sibling of mine dropped out from commitments as an elder care provider to mom, due to personal beleifs that the COVID vax my mom got would mutate my sib's unvaxxed, antivax family. I will not comment further. Another has gone no-contact with the entire family years ago, due to apparent mental issues of paranoia and OCD. So no help coming from that one. A third sib is smart, diligent, and helpful but lives far away from our hometown. So myself, from Texas, and my two other sibs back in the hometown where my mother lives, have accepted assignments as power of attorney to help with finances, health care guardianship, and executor of the estate, at mom's direction. The process has been well organized by my mom, and without acrimony so far among any siblings.

So tonight I've been updating her Will, the POAs and the bequest lists as directed by my mom. They'll get reviewed by her lawyer and signed by her. Amazing the difference a little proper planning makes. I hate the whole subject of eldercare and the death of parents, but damn my eyes if there aren't better ways of doing it than my wife's siblings tried. Again, the amounts each sibling gets (divided equally or distributed as specified, down to the living room coffee table and statuary thereon) are not life changing. I may not have to do much for years, or my mom's heart issues could overcome her pacemaker tomorrow and she'll need 24 hour care until death. One point all of us, her kids, talking or not, agree on is that her money and property is there primarily for her use and her care until her death, not as our inheritance. The difference is delightful to experience compared to the grasping avarice of my wife's siblings.

Talk with your adult kids about what you want to happen as you age. It helps, a lot.; 3/11/24, 12:59 AM

School leaders are now apologizing after a social media post went viral. The principal said it was a misunderstanding and that the school reversed its decision in 24 hours.

Cameron Blasek, a student at East Central High School, was pulled into the principal's office over the situation. He said that they asked him to take it down or be threatened with insubordination. Blasek said that it wasn’t a problem all school year until now.

He put up the flag because he said it's a unique way to show his pride for the country and pay respect to those who lost their lives fighting for his freedom. Blasek said the school admin asked him twice to remove it and twice he stood his ground.

"He said, 'You got to take it down.' And I said, 'But there's no written rules or anything about that in the Student Handbook.' I even read off to him [the] student handbook and all the guidelines in there, the word flag isn't even in there, aside from the flag twirling section," Blasek said.

He said the school argued that since there wasn't a written rule, it could enforce one on a case-by-case basis. He even said that the school tried to say that since his truck was on school property, the school had the right to ask him to take it down.

"Well, he's like, 'The school has a right to request that you remove the flag off the back of your vehicle.' I said, 'You're right.' I said, 'The school does have a right to request that, but since it's just a request, a request means that you're not demanding or telling me that I have to. So, I'm going to decline your request,'" Blasek said.

Blasek said he still doesn't know what prompted the request.

Principal Tom Black said no high school staff member or administrators stated or insinuated that the flag of the United States was offensive, nor has there ever been a complaint received about the U.S. flag. But, word still got around.

"People were sending me messages throughout the night and everything of everybody going out and buying flags left and right. I was getting messages. My phone was blowing up," Blasek said.

He said at least two dozen students donned flags. The school apologized adding that students are "allowed" to fly an American flag.

"That was kind of a shocker because I don't see the "confusion" on you telling a student to take an American flag down off the back of their truck," Blasek said.

Blasek is planning on joining the military after high school. He said that he's still deciding on which branch.

Principal Black said they tried to meet with students who displayed the flag to clarify, but weren't able to meet with all of them before the viral post. He also said there's no plan to change the school's current handbook.

Students will be allowed to fly the U.S. flag as long as it's secured safely and follows the U.S. flag code."

Fortunately, one of my semi-retired sisters was able to move in with him. But still…. At least settling the estate was easy. We knew whatever was left after 5 years of very expensive end-of-life care would have to be split evenly seven ways. Another sister contrasted how relatively easy it was to settle dad’s estate compared to her in-laws estate. Her husband and his two siblings ended up going to court and had to have a judge settle things. To your point, better planning could have prevented this.; 3/11/24, 10:57 PM
