"The fact that a 'none of the above' option could overpower any enthusiasm from the supporters of Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, is another blow..."

"... to her slim chances of winning the nomination over Mr. Trump, who maintains a commanding lead in polls. It also blunts any effort of hers to demonstrate momentum or score at least a symbolic victory. Mark Reynolds, 56, had planned to vote for Mr. Trump in Thursday’s caucuses. But he stopped by a polling place briefly on Tuesday morning to cast a vote for 'None of These Candidates.' 'It’s just to send a message,' Mr. Reynolds said, noting that the primary itself was a 'waste of time.'"

1. Even writing this post feels like a waste of time.

2. Nevada has an idiotic system. I resent even having to put effort into understanding it.

3. "Slim chances"... give me a break.

4. Why is it surprising that "none of the above" did well? I think "none of the above" is just about everybody's preference in any election. But, of course, here, "None of These Candidates" was literally on the ballot, and everyone understood that "None of These Candidates" meant Trump.

5. Elsewhere, people are trying to get "Trump" off all of the ballots. If they succeed, watch for the raging response from the "none of the above" supporters.

To a Trump supporter “None of the above” could also mean “none of these indictments”.

While I agree with your characterization of Nevada’s system, I don’t think they care — or ought to care — about the resentments of a retired professor living two time zones away.

If the polls are correct in a contest between Biden, Trump, and None of the Above the last option would win in a landslide with 68% of the vote.

I’m increasingly of the opinion that the only way out of the current party-realignment or whatever we’re in since Trump is to get through it. I’d planned to vote (super-Tuesday state) for whoever was ahead between DeSantis and Haley, but now I think there’s no point. Let Trump sail to the nomination, and the chips fall where they may in the general. Hopefully, by 2028, both of these old men will be finally done, and we can start regaining some sense of normalcy.

Wow. And she’s not even a candidate for the caucus, which is how Nevada assigns delegates. LOL!

Harry Reid wanted NV to move up in importance, so he finagled a caucus and scheduled it early. I remember because I lived in Vegas and voted in the first one.

Like most of his endeavors, Reid's ideas began as brilliant Dem strategies that came back to smack him in the face.

In theory, I like the idea of putting "none of the above" on the ballot and then, if it wins, holding another election with an entirely new slate of candidates. Trump may be the only person in the country who could win in a system like that. In any other race, we'd end up holding elections forever with nobody ever able to take office.

Limited blogger म्हणाले...

So Nikki is not Trump's VP choice?

Aggie म्हणाले...

I must be struggling to wake up today. If there are no delegates to be had in the primary, why did Nikki choose to run in the primary? What an embarrassing spectacle. If Haley is running solely to prevent Trump from winning, then how much clearer could the message be, that this stratagem is never going to work - and how could voters ever bring themselves to vote for a candidate with such poor judgment, who seemingly trusts such appalling advice?

John henry म्हणाले...

The wording on the ballot is not "none of the above" it is "none of these candidates"

As a practical matter, no difference i can see.

But if the media Can't get something so simple correct, why should we trust them on anything?

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 56% of Likely Republican primary voters would vote for Trump if the primary were held today, while Haley would get 23%.

56% of republicans support Trump. What (WHY?) is Nikki running for? What is Nikki running From?

@tim maguire, I agree, except I’d require “none of the above” to win a majority, not merely a plurality, to force a do-over.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Haley chose to put her name on the primary ballot, even though no delegates were at stake. That decision was made in an attempt to claim a victory in a primary in an early state, and that decision backfired spectacularly. The smart decision would have been skip the primary too, like Trump did.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

I am still waiting to see the big momentum Rich promised us would build after Iowa for Haley.

See the five stages of grief: The anti-Trump forces have moved beyond denial and anger. They are now in the 'bargaining' phase -- they use random lawsuits, made-up new rules, and hypocritical exceptions in an effort to kill the immortal demigod DJ Trump.

Haley just tattooed herself a loser in 2028. She brings to mind Idiocracy:

"What is your name?"

"I'm not sure."

"Okay, your name is Not Sure."

Yes, but IMHO not raging, just quietly determined. Think “silent majority” that blew away the Dems in the 70’s and 80’s. Today I think the need for circumspection is far greater, because the Wokies will take your job, peace of mind and even your life if you declare your true preferences.

Prof. M. Drout म्हणाले...

I like the idea of a system in which, if more voters choose "none of the above" than either of the candidates, both candidates are forever barred from running for that office.
I don't think it would lead to "None of the Above" always winning, because using your vote for "None of the Above" creates a risk that the candidate you like least could win. But it would mean that deeply unpopular candidates being foisted upon us by the insiders in the political parties could be put out of our misery.
If my "None of the Above" system were in place, the Powers that Be might not have tried to afflict us with "Hilary or Jeb! You have to choose one of them!"

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

A more fair election would have been “None of the above” against Boaty McBoatface, Deez Nuts against Nicky Haley.

Haley would have still lost, but she could have said the vote was diluted by Boaty McBoatface and suppressed by Deez Nuts retention.

rcocean म्हणाले...

The Republican party did NOT want a primary. They wanted to keep their caucus system. So when the D legislature forced them to have a primary, they just told everyone to ignore it and kept the Caucus. Trump has already won all the delegates since Haley refused to sign up for it.

She thought she would get a headline out of it, "Haley wins primary", but she didn't even get that. LOL!

Haley is supporting the Open borders pro-Amnesty Biden Border bill. Just more evidence she's a Biden Democrat pretending to be a Republican. That she gets 1/3 of the R vote just shows how weak the R's are.

Get back to normal would mean we don’t have candidates who are pushing 80, we don’t have people threatening to keep popular candidates off the ballot, we don’t have a major candidate facing legal charges, we don’t have so many citizens so angry at their fellow countrymen. It’s not one side or the other, but it needs to be done with, or we’re not going to have much of a country left.

Homer Simpson went into space. Tragedy was averted when Homer, by accident natch, used a carbon rod (aka a hunk of cylindrically-shaped steel). A parade was held to celebrate the successful return from space.

For being second-fiddle to a non-entity Haley can relate.

Leftists control the Nevada legislature, and won't allow the Republicans to require voter ID in connection with a primary, so the Nevada Republicans decided to hold a caucus and award delegates based on caucus results, in which they could require voter ID. The Nevada legislative leftists require a primary be held for each of the political parties, apparently out of spite, so the Republican primary proceeds without voter ID and without any delegates at stake. Trump, being rational, skips the primary (no delegates) and focuses on the caucus (no objection to voter ID and that's where the delegates will be awarded). I have no special insights on Haley that haven't already been exhaustively dealt with above.
