"[Tim] Scott rarely mentioned a significant other during his decades in politics, and in the ’90s he declared himself a 'proud' adult virgin."

"When Scott launched his presidential campaign last spring, the media noted that he would be the first bachelor president since the 19th century. He tried to shut this down by alluding to a girlfriend in May, then sharing some details about his Christian, pickleball-playing partner with the Washington Post’s Ben Terris in September. This only raised suspicions that Scott had invented a ladyfriend for political purposes...."

From "Tim Scott’s Mystery Girlfriend Is Now His Fiancée" (New York Magazine).
“As a guy who is mostly an introvert and on the quiet side, having to have a conversation about the engagement is a little, you know, uncomfortable in a way, but it’s the most exciting thing I’ll do with my life besides making Jesus my Lord,” Scott said in an interview Sunday....

Why is Scott “having to have a conversation about the engagement” if it makes him uncomfortable?...

Is Scott running for VP? Is he in the running? I don't think Trump will pick him. Isn't he needed in the Senate?

Meanwhile, yesterday, Doug Burgum: 1. Announced he's not running for a third term as Governor of North Dakota, and 2. Spoke at a Trump rally. But it can't be Burgum, can it? It's got to be one of the women, don't you think? Elise Stefanik, Kristi Noem, Sarah Huckabee Sanders....

Whatever it is I do like the Tim Scott conversation as it sets up an own goal by the Democrats…

…and it doesn’t got to be one of the women. Unless you’re the NHL it’s all race all the time now. That’s the important battleground. That and electoral fraud…

..I’ve seen a few stories about how Trump talk was buzzing at the corruptocrat winter carnival…and not in a bad way. The socialists and marxists know the need a capitalist engine humming they can feed on because they beginning to see the covid liquidity dry up…

Democrats are safe so long as there’s pickleball- Scott looks like a man that falls hard.

Who cares?? Remember when Rosario Dawson dumped her "boyfriend" Corey Booker after he stepped down from running for President? Such a good little beard. Washington Post didn't really care that Booker never had a girlfriend until he did, to run for President. Why do they care so much about Scott??

It should be kamala harris but that seems unlikely.

"Who cares??"

Who is that addressed at? He's the one who's doing public theater about his sexuality. If he wanted to keep it private, he should have kept it private. He can't put on a show that is possibly political bullshit and expect us to be influenced only to take it at face value. We are living, thinking human beings.

I think the public and politicians need to stop making who their partners are or aren't relevant. I like Tim Scott as a senator - I don't care if he's gay, straight, bi, a virgin, black, white etc.

Scott needs to explain his "short skirt", "burning his bra", "his [short] shorts", "his choice", his binary bigotry in the woke of social progress to the liberal establishment.

Perhaps Tim Scott just wants to get married now. Nothing to do with politics.

we must be suspicious of the ... black male conservative.

That's what the religion of White Left teaches and preaches.

I suspect Trump has learned the Obama/Biden/Harris lesson. Pick a VP no one would ever want as POTUS. Too many people in Congress trusted Pence. Scott might be a good choice. Everyone likes him and no one can picture him as president.

I think Althouse is confounding what is lucrative for the blog (and social media in general) and what actually passes for critical thinking.

Both Barnum and H. L. Mencken are said to have made the depressing observation that no one ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the American public. The remark has worldwide application. But the lack is not in intelligence, which is in plentiful supply; rather, the scarce commodity is systematic training in critical thinking.

I have no idea why Tim Scott's personal love life is of such great importance to the national media. They couldn't find him when a few years ago when Democrats cut off his law enforcement reform bill because they were more interested in defunding ALL police.

I think Trump is going to select either Vivek or Elise.

+++++++++++

Maybe because the media makes such a big deal about his being single and brings it up in almost every article about him and question him about it often.

It's a bit like how after the 2020 election the media wailed "Trump should just go away" yet they published three or four front page articles about him everyday and followed and reported on his every move.

The only thing Pence did wrong was object to the notion that he alone was allowed to turn over an election.

Trump got that wrong... and his supporters, to this day, think Pence alone, could have turned over an election.

rigged or not - the VP does not have that power.

Dr. Carol Swain should be Trump's VP pick.

He won't do it. He'll pick a mushy white dude.

We don't need the distraction. Trump already brings so much baggage; we don't also need to be weighed down by discussion of "a proud adult virgin." We know the Democrats would find some little white guy willing to say that he did sexual things with Scott thirty-five years ago.

His girlfriend has never been through a campaign; we don't need to learn firsthand whether she can handle the pressure. Who knows if she has any secrets in her past that would blow up?

Frankly, I prefer politicians with a family life. It lets us assess how they're capable of genuinely interacting with others in a non-public arena. Trump seems to have raised his kids successfully, while Biden exploited his. Why hasn't Scott ever had a significant relationship?

I figure in entering into marriage both partners have layers of motives and a lot of self-interest. I'll give Scott the benefit of the doubt and wish him and his partner well in this.

Stefanik might be a good choice.

I saw Sarah Sanders on TV yesterday. She's lost a lot of weight. She's running for VP.

And as to all this speculation about Tim Scott and his sexuality. Some people are different. He is a strong Christian. Catholic priests don't have wives and girlfriends and they aren't all gay. They just rank their love of the Lord above their love for women. Maybe it was kind of the same deal for Time Scott.

I'd prefer Vivek, but Trump won't select him because Vivek would outshine him.

It’s the same problem he would have if he picked taylor swift, though i think she’d be a much better choice.

Honestly Professor, I don’t understand why this pushes your buttons so much.

Do you just hate Tim Scott? Is it because he’s black?
Or are you really homophobic and the thought of his being gay bugs you? I wouldn’t think so.
Or do you think gay men don’t have a right to stay in the closet and wear beards? Do they have to come out as gay?

And what if he’s something else? Non-binary, or pansexual. Apparently there are at least 31 flavors.

Truly don’t know why this bugs you so much. I find it (and frankly him) utterly irrelevant. The media apparently wants to keep doing these articles (they have some anti-conservative black man agenda). But why you?

I don't know anything about Tim Scott or his sexuality, so I won't speculate. But he's made a grievous error here in this miscalculation: His actions look like he is reacting to the stories about his bachelorhood, and his explanations are weak. He should have taken command of his choices and been more forceful with his responses. The way it stands, he's opened a vein and put blood into the water, and the sharks are circling.

It won't be Scott for VP. He's not ready for Prime Time. I think Stefanik would be an excellent choice, Noem has too much baggage and not enough political consistency - she's a pretty face and looks good on a horse, but she waffles too much. Huckaby doesn't want the job; She's seen too much of that Toxic-Cesspit-We-Call-'DC' as the Press Secretary.

Howard, you really think Ann's raking in the dough on this?

Gospace said...

Doug Burgum would be a good choice. As would Kristi Noem. Governors, unlike senators, have experience running things.

Doug Burgum isn't as well known as Kristi Noem. But honestly, he's a better fit for Trump- they're both businessmen who made their money BEFORE becoming politicians. Far more trustworthy for elevation to POTUS then a politician who somehow became a multimillionaire on a politician's salary. I can guarantee DemoncRAT prosecutors throughout the USA will be combing over his records looking for reasons to indict him. And his tax records will be mysteriously leaked and the FBI with all it's resources will be unable to determine who did it.

The only thing Pence did wrong was object to the notion that he alone was allowed to turn over an election.

The premise was, given diverse evidence of irregularities and even fraud, to delay approval until the votes could be audited for democratic fidelity.

Stefanik might be ok. Noem is a definite no, she's just a kinder gentler Haley. Sanders, meh.

If you really want to pick a woman, how about MTG? Having her as a running mate would be some *real* high-powered anti-impeachment insurance!

If Trump picks a black running mate he'll lose a third of his supporters, especially if he has a mudshark wife.
Although that may get him a couple black male votes.
