I watched "The Boys in the Boat" last night. It's well-photographed and the cast does a decent job with the thin material of the script. Hadley Robinson is especially appealing in a wasted role as Joe Rantz's girlfriend. However, the movie expects you to believe that a group of first-year oarsmen won Olympic Gold. It is a huge insult to anyone who knows the actual story, and to anyone who has raced with boats and oars.

Read the book, or watch the PBS American Experience documentary "The Boys of '36." Both of these are much better than the movie.

The last day or so has been full of articles on how we, the great unwashed, can support the evil Trump with his several thousand felony indictments.... Opinion pieces by unrepentant liberals, never-Trump Republicans (are they really really Republicans?), people concerned with norms, norms they say Trump violates, while not concerned with the continuing violation of norms by Biden (has a Trump kid's diary contained entries about dad showing with them? Has a Trump kid left behind video evidence of drug use and whoring about? Yes, a politician should be judged by how their kids turn out.

And not one of them understands. We don't follow Trump. We vote for him. He's the message himself, not the messenger. He's no a savior, not infallible, nothing like that. He's a sharp stick in their eye, meant to hurt. First time around, he was Not Hillary! Everyone I knew personally on the Trump bandwagon at the time was someone who didn't live, eat, and breathe politics, or even pay attention to politics until a week before election. Normally. I voted for Cruz in the NY primary. Those people saw something in Trump that I didn't. Still not sure what it was.

There are a few people in politics who are now getting the message that the conservative base of the Republican party doesn't want to make deals with DemoncRATs, doesn't want any more "compromises" that always ratchet left. Largely due to Trump- we're starting to see victories for the Constitution in the courts. Courts are beginning to rule that the Second Amendment really does exist, and really does say what it says- "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Not far enough yet- that means the citizens, the militia, should be able to bear the same arms issued to the average infantry soldier, military arms, meant for war, assault weapons. The militia cannot be turned out with their own weapons- if they don't have them. If you care to look it up, courts with their original pro-gun control decisions- banned sawed off shotguns because, and precisely because, they weren't weapons of war. And until the 1930s you could mailorder fully automatic weapons- then one day you couldn't. And it wasn't until 1987 that congress actually got around to banning them almost completely. So there's no actual history under Bruen to justify that ban.

And now- the newest court decisions are that manufacturers can now make dishwashers that work. I don't care how much water my dishwasher uses- I care that it cleans dishes and rinses them properly. I'm on a well that's never run dry over the 25 years I've lived here. I add phosphates to the detergent cup- they're readily available through Amazon. The grass grows really well over my leach field. The phosphates get nowhere near navigable waters of the US before they're all used up.

We've received tragic news. John Kerry is leaving his position of climate czar to help with Biden's reelection campaign. (Why do Democrats always have "czars", but Republicans never do? A question to ponder.)

Our esteem governor, Jay Inslee, has floated his name as the new climate czar. Remember, in 2020 Jay ran for President on a climate platform. He was so popular during his campaign, that he went from a 1% popularity down to 0%. Jay is the perfect replacement for John Kerry. Both can brag about how out of touch they are and how uninspiring.

The Lt. Governor, Denny Heck, is praying for Jay to get the job, so he can be acting governor for the next 11 months. What a thrill. Denny could issue emergency decrees just like Jay did! What a rush!

Sad to forward the news that the great Peter Schickele has passed at 88. Thanks for all the laughs, Pete. You brought worldwide fame to the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and running noses, as well as conceiving the world's most memorable version of Beethoven 5. See below.

My musical journey would have been sadly incomplete without you and PDQ Bach. Well done, good and faithful servant of music.

Navajo Nation Demands Delay to Private Mission Placing Human Remains on the Moon

"NASA has responded, its argument coming down to “private enterprise” vs. government

On Monday, an American company is poised to make history as the first private U.S. company to launch a mission to send a lander to the surface of the Moon.

One of the payloads include human DNA from a number of science fiction notables.

On Monday (Jan. 8), United Launch Alliance’s shiny new Vulcan Centaur rocket will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida carrying Astrobotic’s Peregrine lunar lander and the Celestis and Elysium memorial payloads containing human remains and DNA.

Two memorial companies, Elysium Space and Celestis, will potentially deliver a symbolic portion of remains to the surface of the moon as one of their services, with Celestis’ precious cargo of cremains and DNA riding on its Tranquility mission, the company’s second lunar flight.

A second Celestis payload will also fly on the Vulcan rocket’s Centaur upper stage to head out beyond the Earth-moon system into deep space, to establish the most remote human presence among the stars.

That Celestis Enterprise Flight will include cremated remains and/or DNA material from numerous “Star Trek” icons such as Nichelle Nichols, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, series creator Gene Roddenberry and his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry, “2001: A Space Odyssey’s” VFX guru, Douglas Trumbull, as well as the DNA of current ULA CEO Tory Bruno, his wife Rebecca, several former presidents of the United States, and many others.

However, representatives of the Navajo Nation have sent a letter demanding the mission be delayed, as sending the human-sourced materials would be desecrating “the sacredness of the moon.”

Leaders of Navajo Nation sent a letter Dec. 21 to NASA and the U.S. Department of Transportation objecting to plans for human remains to be carried aboard the rocket in order to be laid to rest on the lunar surface. Buu Nygren, president of the Navajo Nation, requested the launch window to be delayed until tribe leaders can meet with NASA and other government leaders to discuss their concerns.

In an updated letter on Thursday, Nygren announced plans to meet Friday afternoon with the White House, USDOT and NASA.

“The sacredness of the moon is deeply embedded in the spirituality and heritage of many Indigenous cultures, including our own,” Nygren said in a statement. “The placement of human remains on the moon is a profound desecration of this celestial body revered by our people.”

...I assert that placement on the Moon is appropriate. My claim holds no less weight than those of anyone in the Navajo nation.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has responded, its argument coming down to “private enterprise.”

In a pre-launch science briefing on Thursday (Jan. 4), NASA representatives addressed the controversy over the payloads containing human remains being included on the mission, noting that the mission is a private, commercial effort and that NASA has merely contracted for its scientific payloads to be transported to the moon.

“We don’t have the framework for telling them what they can and can’t fly,” said Chris Culbert, Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program manager at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “The approval process doesn’t run through NASA for commercial missions.”

...

If our nation stays ahead in the space race, it will be because of private enterprise. I can just imagine the woke entities scattered throughout the Biden administration putting a halt to this project because of claims of “sacred space” if this were a government project.

The wisdom of the adage “who smelt it, dealt it” is not hard to understand. A person farts, he knows that the smell is going to permeate the air, he wants to deflect suspicion, so he gets there first, because being first with an accusation is very important, with a “who farted?” Of course the guy who farted is always first to know about it. It’s the same with the regime accusations that Trump is going to use any political power he might gain against his “enemies.” They know that there is a general disgust with using the power of the “Justice Department,” named like “The Ministry of Plenty” in 1984, to eliminate a political opponent with novel theories of the law that have never been applied to anybody else, so since they can’t deny that the dark energy of abuse of power is out there, like the smell of the fart, it is essential that voters be confused as to the source of it, and to pin it, as much as possible, on their victim. “Who smelt it, dealt it” is another form of “every accusation in politics , is a confession.” It’s not always true, but like “cui bono,” it has to be considered if you sincerely want to understand events.

BTW, cui bono J6?

tim in vermont said...

What the Democrats did in 2020 plainly did not amount to a free and fair election, otherwise , they would not have fought efforts to verify the results tooth and nail. Putting troops in DC to shut down demonstrations, of course not until they got in their psy op on J6, required them to accuse Trump of scheming to refuse to accept the result of an election. It’s kind of genius. The first step in understanding what’s going on is grok that the news media tells you what they need you to believe in order to get what it is that they want.

They want me to undergo re-education, which they know will take up my time and fail in any case, so they can undermine my reputation and take my licence away anyway.

Lay down your bets!

You know what? Fuck the Navajo and the "spirituality and heritage of many Indigenous cultures". Many years ago, there was a fight over land, as has happened since time immemorial. You lost that fight. Unlike what sometimes happened when competing Indigenous cultures clashed, your culture was allowed to remain. Maybe not on the terms you'd prefer, but still. Perhaps instead of continuing to whine and insisting on considerations, it's time to move on.
