If your sky is clear and your schedule allows, go outside and look up. The halfmoon points at Jupiter.

We're under a boil water advisory here, due to the low pressure caused by so many breaks. Nothing at our house or nearby so far and KOW.

I asked Grok for a neo noir film. Grok recommended Hindi film Andhadhun(2018) - for rent on Amazon Prime with subtitles. Very good movie.
The movie begins with the quote, “What is life? It depends on the liver.” Which I figured was a Hindi saying. It’s actually a sentiment expressed by William James:
“Is life worth living? It all depends on the liver.”

An absolutely beautiful, savage deconstruction of the recent remarks by Jamie Dimon concerning Trump and his supporters that Althouse seemed to like so much...

Here, at The Bulwark: "Jamie Dimon Joins the Trump Normalizers."

An excellent and representative snippet:
"With regard to foreign policy, Dimon asserted that Trump was 'kind of right about NATO.'

"Really? Perhaps Dimon missed this 2019 Trump statement, reported in John Bolton’s book: 'I don’t give a shit about NATO.' And maybe Dimon didn’t read the December 2023 article in the Atlantic entitled 'Trump Will Abandon NATO,' by historian and foreign policy analyst Anne Applebaum.

"If Dimon means to suggest that Trump was right to insist that NATO members spend more money on defense—something that presidents of both parties have been demanding for decades—Trump’s ineffectual hectoring doesn’t hold a candle to Joe Biden’s record of accomplishment, encouraging and leading the NATO response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and helping to oversee the growth of the alliance that Trump wishes to destroy."

remember how resodent Biden was going to open a charging station on every block?
$2 Billion in Subsidies, Only 2 EV Stations Opened
The government rollout of EV chargers has been a slow-motion affair, and as you’d expect the reason is politics. The feds are throwing billions of dollars to build charging stations, but they’ve added social-justice and union mandates that make the build-out more complicated than necessary.

It’s the latest payout from $7.5 billion in funding from the 2021 infrastructure spending blowout. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke of handing out the money as a triumph in itself; “We have a chance to lead the world in the EV revolution.”

But the revolution’s been a long time coming. Despite the $2 billion of subsidies already authorized, only two federally funded stations have opened.

It seems likely that government officials were involved in planting pipe bombs in Washington, DC three years ago, as part of an effort to keep Donald Trump from running for president again. Darren Beattie has details.

“Is life worth living? It all depends on the liver.”

So when I read that, at first my brain was like, "Why liver? Why not kidney, or heart?"

And then a second later my brain went, "Is this an alcohol joke? People who haven't destroyed their livers have more fun?"

And then my brain was like, "Oh! Liver is a reference to person who lives, not the organ. Okay."

I've never heard the word "liver" used that way.

“So he admitted a $5 million in loans. It could be up to $7 million. Hunter Biden doesn’t have a job. Hunter Biden doesn’t have income. And this is the game that the Biden’s play. They’ll call it a loan when really it is a gift. And if you get a gift from someone to the tune of $5 or $7 million you have to pay taxes on that. If it’s a loan, you don’t have to pay taxes on it, which is why they call it the loan,” Duffy explained.
“It’s a way to get around not having to pay taxes,” Duffy continued. “That’s the scheme. And by the way, the ‘sugar brother’ has made three trips to the White House, also the play that the Biden’s make, which is, ‘Give me money and then you get access.’ That’s what is happening with Morris here, Kevin Morris.”

Laying into the WEF:

"Kevin Roberts, President of the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, spoke to globalists at the World Economic Forum confab Thursday and told them directly that “You are part of the problem, you are not the solution.”

“I will be candid,” Roberts began, adding “the agenda that every single person member of the [future Republican] administration needs to have, is to compile a list of everything that’s ever been proposed at the [WEF], and object all of them wholesale.

All of you people who think you aren’t doing great in America, shut up! It’s an illusion! Your good jobs might be gone to China, but mine is not! You might be having trouble finding affordable housing, but I own my home! Come on! McDonalds is paying $20 an hour, inflation is all in your head! If you had to close your business because you couldn’t afford to pay your employees, well, as Hillary once explained, the Democrats can’t be responsible for every undercapitalized business! Oh and the wars! Are you not entertained! So buck up and vote for four more years, because for retired guys like me, with paid off mortgages, plenty of savings, and a secure pension, America is already great!

tim in vermont said...

Oh, and by the way, I got to be comfortably affluent under policies that Joe Biden is completely overturning, but don’t worry, I am sure that the new policies will work out as well for you as the old ones did for me.

Yes, Carroll had the burden of proof. But you, and those who agree with you, misunderstand what needed to be proven. Carrol did meet her burden by proving that Trump defamed her by calling her a liar.

Althouse rightly pointed out that because, in a defamation case, truth is a defense, it then fell to Trump to prove that she is a liar. He failed to prove that she lied and so lost the case.

There's a number of factors for that Mutaman. Biden isn't one of them. Those people with operating wells are pumping as much as they can until the Biden Administration changes the rules again. Foreign money, mostly Chinese, is looking for value. There's a reason California never has a housing slowdown. The Chinese are buying as much real estae in California as they can. Despite the shit show that is the Biden economy the US is still a better polace to park your assets if you live in China or Taiwan.
In the othwer case I can tell you don't shop for food very often. On the average groceries are 50% higher today than in 2019. This impacts everyone who eats, but it is especially hard on the working poor. You know. The people you sneer at. The people that shop at Walmart and Aldi.

Nobody says that the owning classes aren't doing great under the policies of the Biden Administration. Historically stocks have always done well during periods of inflation, as long as we don't get to hyperinflation. Those companies with pricing power, anyway. Small businesses simply get plowed under, as they can no longer afford enough staff to provide acceptable levels of service.
