Large iceberg the size of a small iceberg... I mean, large iceberg the size of the smallest state.

"'It’s a state-sized iceberg. It’s a big, big iceberg, it’s also equivalent to about the size of Rhode Island,' said Walter Meier, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center."

From "A ‘megaberg’ three times the size of New York City is on the move" (WaPo).

That headline got me. "Megaberg" sounds like it means large mountain, and a large mountain is "on the move."

If you're like me, you thought "Billy the Mountain."

They left that night, crunchin' across the Mojave desert/Their voices echoing through the canyons of your minds/"Ethel, want to get a cuppa cawfee?"/"There's a Howard Johnson's want to eat some clams?"

Most of my home county is Mojave or low desert. You could fit a lot of icebergs and Rhode Islands in San Bernardino County.

Icebergs have definitively taken over the 'berg' from real mountains. No goin' back.

This is one of those perennial headlines; it's at least the third time I can remember seeing it over the years. So basically, the Rhode Island sized iceberg continues to grow back.

BUMBLE BEE म्हणाले...

That's positively Titanic.
We see the latest news roundups have gotten the blogmistress into Zappa/Python layer of the earth's atmosphere. Wave to Hubble for us!

My recollection is that this particular iceberg has been grounded for the past couple years, and now it's not.
I guess a headline like "Large Iceberg is stationary" -- that could have been written at any time in the past years -- doesn't cause clicks.

Thank you, I haven't thought of that song in about 40 years!

Can we crash that iceberg into Manhattan?

Manhattan sized icebergs are another popular comparison, too.

I am imagining icebergs training like a fighter to make their class: “Listen, bub, pack on a few more solid pounds and you can go from the Rhode Island class to the Long Island class.”

"Sir, we have located Sinwar in Khan Younis."

"Very good. Time to deploy Megaberg."

Rember when the idea of moving an iceberg to a water starved area was the next big idea? Here's the chance.

Somewhere, a mountain is moving
I'm afraid it's moving without me

We're all going to die! A floating iceberg is on the move and will melt and flood everyone and everywhere, including Mt. Everest! Stop the fossil fuel burning to save the planet!

That's what the climate hysterics at the WaPoo want us to believe. If they really believed that B.S., they'd be the first ones to shutdown their presses. They won't.

'Eat some clams?'

Is that like Visigoths?

Rhode Island must be pretty sick and tired of everything even remotely large being compared to it.

I think there should be a moratorium on such comparisons.

We should instead use units of Chris Christie.

"There's a huge asteroid hurtling toward earth. It is at least 6 Christies!"

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Back in USENET times, alt.rhode-island was the place to put links to things that said "such-and-such is as big as Rhode Island"
I suppose there's a subreddit for that now.

Back in January, when the ice berg broke off initially, it was the size of Houston, per google. Now, Rhode Island. I note that the former is half the size of the latter, and that the iceberg seems to have doubled in size. Unless, of course, the news reporters used their usual crap and innumeracy for the articles.

Fred Drinkwater म्हणाले...

It's a "tabular iceberg". Flat as Kamala's EEG.

It seems that people (not you as I assume your remarks are sarcastic) are not familiar with the concept of displacement.

Eureka!

I don't miss hojos. I especially don't miss that brown bread in a can my mother used to inflict on us.

I do really miss the fried clams, though.

Billy & Ethel can roll on.... Mothers @ Fillmore might be my least-loved Zappa album, & I'm a big fan; just listened to all 4 sides of Uncle Meat a few days ago.

I think there is a MAGAberg bearing down on the eGOP and the rest of Washington!!

Static Ping म्हणाले...

I can only comprehend iceberg sizes in comparison to the iceberg that sank the Titanic. How many freezer burned Jack Dawsons does this qualify as?

Elon believes, but it sounds like most commentators think they are smarter than Mr. X

If only Rhode Island could float away and take Sheldon Whitehouse with it.

If it hits, hell truly will freeze over.

Can he see the ice burg from his all-white beach club?

WaPo's headline is just the tip of the empathetic climate scheme.

Billy was a mountain.
Ethel was a tree growing out of his shoulder.

Great album.
