"Does the shade remind anyone else of a complexion? Specifically, a light one? That gave me pause, for a moment."

"I think about how brands like Fenty Beauty have pushed the cosmetics industry to make shade ranges that include people of color, especially those with dark skin. This color, plus the skin connotation of the Peach Fuzz name, hews pretty closely to the shades worn by white people that there are no shortage of."

Said Callie Holtermann, a member of the NYT "style" team, quoted in "Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2024 Is Peach Fuzz/Will it catch fire the way millennial pink did?" (NYT).

God forbid anything should be identified with white people, who are apparently the scourge of world history.

But now that you mention it, it is a color that could be a white complexion.

So white folks are, indeed, people of color.

Meade is right- too orange to identify with white lady foundation.

There's a X meme I saw the other day...the one with a photo and someone looking on disapprovingly and then being OK with it.

First photo; water fountain with the words 'Colored People.' The person looks concerned.

Second photo; same water fountain with the words 'People of Color.' The person smiles and gives a thumbs-up.

We are not a serious nation.

Btw, it's a bit chilly today so I am wearing my Jeans of Blue instead of shorts.

"Fenty Beauty" is too narcotic-adjacent a name for a company in my opinion. Talk about oxymoron.

Hmmmm......the New York Times. Eventually, the Times will run a story about noticing color is racist. This is just the first entry in the narrative.

I'm calling for the permanent suspension of this color from the visible spectrum. Anyone caught searching, watching or shearing such colorless material will be arrested and sent to the Ukraine front lines.

Seems to me that white people should at least get a turn now and then. They are, after all, still the majority in this country. But Pantene ought to call it Trump Peach; I think it's an omen.

If only someone could replicate the success of Sara Breedlove(Mdme C.J. Walker), the first self made female millionaire in the US. She made her fortune selling cosmetics for black women. She was the first person in her family to be born outside of slavery.

But now we have NYT whiners who can only cry for white people to save them or if they are white, to save people of color.

All white people tend toward blue or orange in the kind of skin color they have. That peach is an orange-tending color which would make my blue-tending skin-color look horrible. And I bet that the same is true of "blacks." Maybe it's a blue-black or a beige-black, IDK, - but some would look good in peach and some would be a disaster. Or think of trees - suppose a red maple of autumn was reflecting in on a wall that color - how would that look? And that peach is insipid anyhow. As if the paint manufacturer's artistic crew crouched under the desk trying to toss out completely anodyne color suggestions because bleh is what pops this year and that color was the most bleh. "I swear to you, Tiffany, if anyone reacts, you're gone." "No, Jeremy, everyone passed by it on our likes/dislikes test. It's not even a loser."
Marketing is hell.

It used to be, that "All the news that's fit to print" meant, in practice, "all the news that fits". When the NYT was printed on paper. But since the verbiage now spooges out into whatever space the internet might be thought to afford, that isn't really appropriate. A mathematician might be able to calculate some theoretical upper limit to the number of characters the NYT can exfoliate on a given day -- say, Avogadro's number, raised to the seventh power -- but one supposes that some other metric must dominate whatever passes for editorial judgment in present circumstances. How much of this shit does it suit the owner to have shoveled?

n.n said...

If only. No, it was a typo, and a teachable moment about how quickly Critical Rhetoric Theory (CRT) can progress to a mess.

Look. Imagine -- as I can easily imagine -- that I have been forced, at gunpoint, to dig my own grave. Now I am kneeling next to that grave, my elbows tied behind me with twisted wire. I can feel the barrel of the gun between the cords at the back of my neck, and I am asked one question, one critical question;

With regard to the lying liars at the NYT, do you
1 - hate them
2 - despise them
3 - pity them
4 - loathe them

This is where an author benefits from having an editor. My immediate choice is "loathe". To me, hatred indicates a simple desire to kill, to eliminate, to be rid of. And of course, one despises them. I mean -- well. How else? And then, pity. Pity is something of a luxury, is it not? When your hamstrings are aching from the struggle not to pitch face-first into the muddy receptacle? I can agree that they are pitiable, but that's not quite the same thing as feeling pity. Loathing, on the other hand, combines the desire to see them ended, or rather, never, ever to see them again, with a certain reluctance, perhaps less than manly, but felt nonetheless, to have any truck with them at all. Ick! Can't they just be -- oooh, I don't know, can't they simply not be, never even have been? I really just don't want to even touch them. I loathe them. The idea of standing behind them, holding, say, a short-barreled 22 with a 30-round magazine, pointing it, making sure of your aim ... it's just ICK! Like having to kill all the slugs eating your tomatoes with your bare hands. Can't they just not be there any more?

IMO, lighter peach shades don't look particularly good on fair-skinned caucasian-types, of which I am one. In contrast---and because of contrast---I think that many people with darker skin tones look great in these colors. One example: my husband has a dark olive Mediterranean and Jewish ethnically-based skin tone, looks a lot better in a pink Polo shirt than I do.
