Humperdink said...: Driving to Dallas, Texas from Northwest PA took us through Arkansas. This morning at the Arkansas welcome center Mrs. Dink inquired about some sights to visit. Everything was Bill Clinton this and Bill Clinton that. They love him in Arkansas. I should have asked where the Monica Lewinsky exhibit was.

Our route took us through Hope, Arkansas, the alleged boyhood home of the former Commander-in-Heat. I say alleged because some claim he was born in Hot Springs, but no matter. We took photos of the his home and decided to eat at a small family restaurant in town. The restaurant surprisingly had a big screen television in the center of the dining room. MSNBC was on. I have many slave owning ancestors and ancestral relatives from the South, and ancestors and ancestral relatives who fought for both sides, with every possible combination of brother vs brother, father vs son, cousin vs cousin, etc., in my family ancestry.

Several of my ancestral relatives, but as far as I can determine, none of direct slave owning ancestors, sired children with their female slaves- and allowed their own children to be raised as slaves and be sold to others. The thought that such evil exists truly disgusts me. Slavery was simply a way of life in many cultures- you were either a slave or a free man. But a free man who enslaves his own children is simply unspeakably evil.

I can document that two of my slave owning ancestral relatives who had children with multiple slaves were disowned by their fathers. So evidence exists that some at the time disapproved of such evil. And took personal action to punish the behavior. INHO- a good thing.

The past is a different world, which some people overlook. A few things in the past were always evil, such as, for example, human sacrifice. The Aztecs deserved to be conquered by the Spanish. Sending the old and infirm off on an ice floe when food was short and if equally shared, everyone would die? Well, not ideal, but not truly evil. Today Canada does the same, except, they can actually afford to keep the old and inform alive. It's just cheaper to help them commit suicide. Same with the Dutch. What wasn't evil then is evil now.

I'm certain we can all come up with examples of actions we think are always evil, no matter when they happened, and actions that might or might be evil, dependent on circumstances.
