"Israel’s defense minister ordered a 'complete siege' of the long-blockaded Gaza Strip on Monday..."

"... as its forces battled Palestinian assailants in border towns for a third day and launched retaliatory strikes that hit a mosque and a marketplace in Gaza. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that 'no electricity, no food, no water, no fuel' would be allowed into Gaza, in effect trying to cut off the crowded coastal territory already under a 16-year blockade...."

"The continued violence — and the fact that assailants said they are holding 150 Israeli hostages — has added to the stunned disbelief enveloping Israel, where families are watching men and women who had finished their main military service called back to serve and where the names of the dead have scrolled across television screens. More than 700 people have been killed in Israel and nearly 2,400 wounded.... At least 560 Palestinians have been killed, according to authorities in Gaza, and at least 2,900 others have been injured....."

When two groups hate each other, and I mean legitimately, there is no negotiated victory or cease-fire that can ever be permanent. Every negotiation or cease-fire becomes a consolidation opportunity to prepare the next generation for the inevitable 'final solution' to the problem of 'those people'.

This will never end until one or the other are completely destroyed, and since there can be no peace without victory, any victory must be total and permanent in nature.

Kick the can down the road another 100 years, it will profit no one and nothing.

Notice that they don't explain that the Israeli casualties were civilians. I'm guessing that most of the Palestinian casualties (whatever the real numbers are) are fighters, or civilians killed in areas where fighters had installed themselves.

By who - and how? Of course the USA MSM has always been amazingly incurious about how many Palestinians have been killed in the last 10 years. Or how Israel has been forcing Arabs out of the West Bank and putting illegal settlements there.

If you want to stop this semingly endless cycle of violence, you're going to have to understand the history and get BOTH SIDES to stop the killing. Of course, we don't get that.

Instead we get morons like Mike pence acting like its 911 and WTC has been attacked. Per warmonger mike: Trump and all his Republican rivals caused all the deaths because they were "weak". Put Tough Guy Mike in the Presidency and he'll show those damn Muslims and Russkies who's boss.

The Israeli goal is to end Hamas control of Gaza. To that end it is laying siege to Gaza and then Gaza will surrender. Israel will go in and find Hamas' tunnels and rocket launching sites and other items on which aid money has been spent and destroy them. It won't find the Hamas leadership because they went to Qatar after arranging the attack on Israel.
World opinion will divide. Hamas attacked, murdered, raped and kidnapped peaceful leftists who basically supported the Palestinians. But leftists won't learn anything from that and will support Hamas. And others will support Israel.
The people of Gaza will be better off with Hamas gone - that's an argument that can be used - but the division here is over The right of Israel to exist. People say: oh, I don't think it's like that" and that's Checkmate. If people won't learn that's the end of argument. If people can't see who Hamas is after recent events, then no argument will reach them.

Whether Israel views itself as a secular State that happens to be predominately Jewish (and offers a permanent refuge to Jews from other parts of the world), or a conservative Jewish religious State, both are proving incompatible with the presence of a Muslim minority within Israel or in areas that enjoy access to Israel.

This will get ugly. Historically, no technologically superior peoples have put up with this kind of multi-generational conflict. The "Diversity is our Strength" folks had best avert their eyes.

Gen Wm. T. Sherman has entered the chat.

It will be interesting to see how this ends. Starving, dehydrated, sick "Palestinian" infants will be on every newspaper front page, from New York to Kabul.
The UN will declare a humanitarian emergency. Leftist Israelis will crawl out of their bomb shelters and sport "Not in my name" signs.
Egypt will allow "humanitarian" aid to cross their common border.
Things will quiet down, and then the cycle will start over.

"I'm guessing that most of the Palestinian casualties (whatever the real numbers are) are fighters, or civilians killed in areas where fighters had installed themselves."

The difficulty that the Israelis face is that the "fighters" have "installed themselves" in a place called Gaza, where there are a couple million "civilians". If they have closed the border, and keep it closed, there will be mass starvation. Soon. This will present the rest of the world, and most especially the Egyptians, with a problem.

"No electricity, no food, no water, no fuel." Oooh. Sounds pretty severe. When will UN demand a cease-fire so it can supply freedom fighters with fresh everything?

This deprivation is just earnest money on the larger debt being settled. I imagine it will go on for months. In the end maybe Gaza will resemble Grozny?

So many NYT bubble people in the comments think the issues are the same as three days ago. I'm not sure they would feel that way if invaders shot down their grandmother or their children or if the elected government of a hostile nation rained down 5000 missiles on New York City while chanting, "Death to New Yorkers."

But given that they continue to vote for Democrats, they might.

Israel wasn't occupying Gaza. Gaza declared war on Israel. Israel should root out and kill the terrorists and expel the rest of Gaza and then level it to the ground. As for the US, we should let Israel do what it must and advise the UN either UNWRA gets disbanded and defunded or we cut our paying our disproportionate funding of the UN. In the meantime we should expel what passes for Palestinian diplomacy out of the US and eliminate any and all funding for any Palestinian entity.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reported that $6 billion in Iranian funds were released from a South Korean bank and were transferred to a Qatari bank as part of a prisoner swap deal. But not to worry, the money can only be used for humanitarian purposes. Not considered is the fact that Qatar financially supports Hamas.

Israel is fighting for their lives. Palestinians fight to kill Jews and eliminate Israel. Palestinians are not hostage to Hamas, the PA, and Hezbollah (among others). I keep hearing that. They voted them in. They keep them in. They seem intent on killing Jews rather than work on their own lives, building their own communities. So be it. They have (again) attacked families, women, children, seniors. They are raping women, tearing kids from parents and families. Hiding behind civilians they have not yet killed. Killing any others, just because.

They are a scourge. Cowards. A deadly disease. And you think to yourselves, well...it's just the Jews, just Israelis. We can watch it, but we're not touched.
Yes you are. Look at the transformation of Belgium, the UK, France, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Italy, Spain. Look at our own cities here in the US. You think it's just the Jews concern? Europe has been changed. They are on a lifelong, multi-generational jihad. You can tell yourselves it does not concern you, but it does and it will. They will not stop until you all submit. It is who they are.

And I say 'it's who they are' knowing that it is NOT all Muslims. But it is enough of them, a large percentage of them. And that is all it takes. So...what does Western Civilization do about it? What do the Western nations think as they watch what Israel is going through? What can the leaders of the UK or France even say about it now, without creating riots that burn down parts of their cities?

I have always read/heard that Palestinians are the dummies of the Arab world.

It turns out they aren't very bright:

"This reported the IQ of a sample of 639 6–16 year olds tested with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised for whom an IQ of 86 (in relation to a British IQ of 100) was calculated by Lynn and Vanhanen (2012). The second is the PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) study of 15 year olds tested in a number of countries in 2009 in mathematics, science and reading. The results are highly correlated with IQs and have therefore been adopted as a proxy for IQs by Meisenberg and Lynn (2011), who estimate an IQ of 83.3 for Palestine from the data."

I guess the Gaza Strip is Israel's Stalingrad, in some ways. Or their Bloody Point at Antietem.

I remember the first time I saw that layout, in 8th grade (we studied the formation of Israel in a history class) and thought: that is a terrible idea.

Let's see how far this castle siege strategy continues -- Egypt may bring in food and water from the south. Many are going to die within days if they have no water. There will be many photos of sick and dying people plastered over social media.

This is the first time Israel has declared war since 1973. I think they wrote off the hostages / sex slaves / "brides" as de facto dead within 12 hours. I'd not be surprised if Israel partitions Gaza into smaller zones.

"Long-blockaded". BUT - "Gaza is currently growing at a rate of 3% per year, which is the 13th highest growth rate in the world. The city is already very crowded with limited space for new construction. The city's schools are overcrowded with an average of 40 children in every classroom. Between 2000 and 2013 alone, Gaza grew by over 687,000. By 2020, the region will have 2.1 million people."

The Jewish presence in modern Israel goes back almost 3,000 years. By 800 B.C. two Jewish kingdoms were established in the area, Israel and Judah. The kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians by 700 B.B, and Judah became a vassal state of Assyria and was later then seized by Babylon. The Jews revolted against Babylon. The revolt was crushed and the Jewish people taken into slavery or sent into exile. A generation later, Persia conquered Babylon and let the Jew return to their homeland. the Jews were allowed to self govern and rebuild the Temple as part of the Persian Empire. In the 330's B.C. the area was conquered by Alexander the Great, and upon his death was controlled by various empires. The area eventually was conquered by Rome. In 66 A.D. the Jews began a revolt against Roman rule. By 77 A.D. the second Temple had been destroyed and the Jewish people again enslaved and dispersed. Fifty years later the remaining Jews tried to assert their independence and were again crushed by the Romans. Again the Jewish population was mostly exiled. This is the first time the name Palestine was used to describe the area. There was a small continuous Jewish presence outside of Jerusalem. When the Byzantine Empire split from Rome and became Christian, the Jews began to be persecuted. By 500 A.D. the area was majority Christian. There were periods of Jewish revolt, but the Byzantines retained control of the area. By 640 A.D. the Muslim Arabs arrived and took control of the region. For the next 600 years the area was controlled by a succession of Islamic Empires and became more and more Muslim through a huge decrease in the local population and Arab immigration. Then the Crusades began. Egypt ended up in control of the area when the Crusades finished. In 1561 the Ottoman Empire took control of the area from Egypt. Control of the area bounced back and forth between Egypt and the Ottomans until it was taken from the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I and given to the British as a mandate by the League of Nations. Jews from the Diaspora began to move back to the area and joined the Jewish population that had never left in the 1880's. This was the birth of the Zionist movement to create a Jewish state in Israel. In 1909 the Jews began building the Tel Aviv. During W.W.I the British issued the Balfour Declaration, expressing support for a Jewish state in Israel. The Arabs began to revolt against Jewish immigration and British rule of the area. The Jews began to form private armies to defend themselves. The League of Nations stated in the mandate given to Britian that there was to be two states, one Jewish and one Arab. Over the next twenty years Jews continued to immigrate and the Arabs continued to protest. In 1939 the British began to restrict Jewish immigration. At the end of WW II, the British were facing armed revolts from both the Jewish and Arab populations. The British tried to negotiate with both sides, but the Jews demanded a two-state solution, and the Arabs demanded the entire area be given to the Arabs. The British punted and turned the issue over to the U.N.. The U.N. decided there should be a Jewish state, an Arab state and that Jerusalem would become an international city. The Jews accepted the deal, the Arabs did not. The mandate fell into chaos with open fighting between the Arabs and Jews. In May of 1948, the Jews founded the state of Israel. The next day Israel was attacked by four Arab countries. Four other Arab countries would pile on. A year later, the fighting stopped. Jordan took control of the Westbank; Egypt took control of Gaza and Israel took control of the rest. 150,000 Arabs remained behind and became Israeli citizens. Israel was admitted to the United Nations shortly afterwards.

There has been a free and independent Israel three times, there has never been a free and independent Palestine.

@Gahrie, that’s a pretty good summary, though you left out the Maccabees.

To me it’s quite simple: after 1948 and confirmed by being victorious in subsequent wars and intifadas, Israel holds that land by fight of conquest. It’s the same right by which people of European, Asian, and African hold the North and South America continents. It’s the same right by which Russia holds the Crimea. It’s the same right by which North and South Vietnam are unified. It’s the same right by which China holds Tibet.
