Luxury food. Do you eat any of them? And what is a luxury food anyway? There's actually some sort of agreement on definition, embodies in this:

"Luxury products possess six key characteristics: Price, Unsurpassed Quality,
Aesthetics, Rarity, Extraordinariness and Symbolism

So for much of the world, steak, of any kind, is a luxury food. But I'm not concerned with the rest of the world, just the good ol' USA.

IMHO, tenderloin is a luxury food. I eat it now on a fairly regular basis. It's available in most grocery stores. But, to be honest, 2 or 3 decades ago I don't recall seeing it on the meat shelves of the stores I patronized. Did I skip over it because it was too expensive to look at? Or was it only available in restaurants and butcher shops? I don't know. OTOH, sirloin and top rounds are just regular old everyday foods. And I like them too.

Scallops. Definitely in the luxury food category. Only shellfish I'll eat. Used to only eat it at restaurants. A few years back I looked up recipes on the internet. Turns out it's amazingly easy to prepare. And of course, I use the recipes only as a guideline. The cooking instructions as to how long to cook and at what temperature I follow religiously. It's seafood. My wife is from MD. All seafood must have at least a sprinkling of Old Bay Seasoning... else it's not made properly.

Clams. Definitely a luxury item. My mother, actually her entire side of the family, loved clams on the half shell. Raw, uncooked clams. Yuck! Double Yuck in fact! Yet, none of them ate oysters at all. I know not the difference... But oysters also fall under the luxury food category.

Lobster and crab. Both luxury foods. My wife's family when they get together can demolish a bushel of crabs in no time flat. Steamed with Old Bay Seasoning, of course... No one in my family ever did AFAIK. However, lobster was always a special occasion. The only crustacean I'll eat is shrimp. Which depending on how it's prepared or served, is either ordinary food or luxury food. Farmed shrimp is cheap. Taking it out of the luxury category.

pate de Foie Gras. Definitely a luxury food. I've never had it. Similar to liverwurst, which isn't a luxury food at all. For me, it's actually a comfort food. When I was way younger my mother used to send me to the corner store at lunch for 30¢ worth of liverwurst. In 1959-1960 enough to make two sandwiches. I'd gat home, and she'd make two liverwurst and butter sandwiches, one for each of us. My two siblings never liked the stuff. Wegman's carried Pate de Foie Gras. I keep thinking I should buy some and try it as I pass by the cheese center (where it's kept...), and don't. Should I? Anyone have an opinion.

Caviar. Definitely a luxury food. Not even on my list of things to try.

Based on the definition above- Rarity, Extraordinariness and Symbolism prairie oysters are a luxury food. I have a friend who loves them. I may have others, but they've never said... High on my "Nope" list.

Cheeses. there are all kinds that qualify as luxury foods here in the USA, and all kinds that don't. My uncle was a merchant sailor. Ate cheeses from all over the world. And knew which cheese shop in Manhattan carried all of them. Used to play cards all night eating slices of Virginia baked ham- made in the kitchen from a canned ham- with cubes or smears of various cheeses from around the world. I have acquaintances today who have no idea what a brie or Gruyere is. My children all do. And as I visit my grandchildren, they learn. And- I don't even pretend to be an expert on them, there are so many.

My non-political contribution to the open thread tonight.

Stuff you’re only going to find on X: Scenes from Ottawa right now where thousands of parents and kids are protesting explicit sexual content in schools and radical gender ideology.

These protests are absolutely massive and across the entire country. #1MillionMarch4Children

I looking forward to Russell Brand with Tucker. 👀

Stock market's VIX index of volatility appears to have bottomed last week, when it reached its low point of the last 3 1/2 years. VIX tends to move inversely to prices, so a change in trend would end the underlying bullish tone that worked in stocks' favor over that time. IF that change in the VIX trend is occurring here.

Hardcore lefty Dr. Jeffery D. Sachs comes out against the Uke war in a large way, for all the right reasons.

"To repeat, he [Putin] went to war to prevent NATO, more NATO, close to his borders."

Paging Dr. W., please pick up the white courtesy phone.

Is anyone else curious as to what what role the government of Mexico has in the invasion at the southern border? One would think a not so veiled threat to the El Presidente would stop this fiasco. Of course that's not our goal.

Sachs was there when the dissolution of the USSR was announced; it’s not like he’s a Johnny come lately to the issues involved in the conflict.

Race Hustler Ibram X. Kendi’s Woke Center Lays Off Most Staff

"Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Woke black Social Justice Warrior activist turns out to use organization to scam white liberals out of money. It happened with #BlackLivesMatter head Patrisse Khan-Cullors and her house-buying spree, and now it’s “anti-racist” Ibram X. Kendi, whose Boston University Center for Antiracist Research just had a massive layoff.

Boston University hired Ibram X. Kendi to lead its new Center for Antiracist Research in 2020, a year marked by a global pandemic and nationwide racial tension.

For “nationwide racial tension,” read “#BlackLivesMatter/Antifa rioting.”

Three years later, after at least $43 million in grants and gifts and what sources say has been an underwhelming output of research, the Center for Antiracist Research laid off almost all of its staff last week.
"

More, lots more, at the link.

Gospace, thanks for reminding me that we are living in the best era ever for the human race, and in the best place ever. Everything you mentioned is still plentiful and reasonably available to ordinary people even in funky little towns like the one I'm calling from in a booth in the Midwest.

In May 2020, a Ukrainian parliamentarian asked a question that is once again being revisited: a few months before Biden's demand for Shokin's resignation, Poroshenko, Europe and State Dept had all positively assessed progress of Prosecutor General Office. What caused change?.

https://twitter.com/ClimateAudit/status/1704856826012168344

Steve is being Cute, we know the change was caused by an email from Burisma to Joe Biden's bag-man son, which is preserved on the laptop for all to read, demanding that an end be put to the investigation.

But we are all sure that Joe Biden's motivations are of the purest, in all matters regarding Ukraine. Also, the true bribery, the one for which Trump was impeached, was asking about this stuff.

He gets a pass because of "cruel neutrality".
