Mercifully Mitt calls it quits. Hopefully the next one isn’t worse

I'm not fan of Romney, but good for him to decide not to run for re-election because of his advanced age. I just hope that Biden, Trump, Pelosi, Feinstein, McConnell, Grassley, and a whole host of these geezers will decide to do the same. Why do we tolerate being being governed, by Democrats and Republicans, by people who should be in nursing homes? Why?

On the sex thread, someone mentioned same-sex scenarios with like age differences. Nabokov wrote that one publisher returned his manuscript of Lolita with the suggestion that they might reconsider if he placed the story in a rural setting and made the child a boy.

Yewww.

I was reading adult books in grade school--not always with entire comprehension but the practice helps. When I was about 11 I went to the brand new public library branch on my
bike (it was about 1.5 miles "as the crow barks"*) and straight to the WWII section.

Picked out the big one on the Ploesti Raid and went to check it out. The old lady said I couldn't. It was an adult book.

I told her I was reading adult books at home (didn't mention Ian Fleming) and now wanted this one. She opened it at random, spun it around, and demanded I read.

"At Benghazi [I knew where Benghazi was--my father had been there, had photos] the second group's takeoff had been delayed to 1015 hours by a sandstorm and ground fog . . . "

Fine, take it.

++++++++++++++

I should reread it.

@ rehajm; One of the few true public servants. If only DC were full of more like him.

His party left him. But still he manages a parting shot at Biden over the age thing, by practicing what he is preaching. What a shame it was Obama he was up against and not Hillary Clinton. He might have made for a pretty decent President.

Maybe tomorrow will be the first day that Biden's impeachment defenders come up with a.line that won't easily be proven wrong by a simple search of The New York Times archive. But if you are going to keep doing this, go for it. Every time some Biden supporter innocently and confidently tweets some second hand lie from Biden's media protectors, it's another chance to shake them out of their bubble.

It is funny that just a couple weeks after being slapped down by Federal Courts for pressuring tech companies to censor Joe Biden's political opposition, he sends out a letter urging news organizations to attack Republicans using the baseless claim that Republicans have no evidence to justify an impeachment inquiry.

Two Japanese kids playing the Anderson and Roe Bach Piano Duo that I was recommending earlier.

Interesting difference, I'd put it that each of Anderson and Roe play both parts rather than just their own.

A difference similar to what I ran into when Ben Shipiro plays Bach was making the rounds a week ago, which is competent enough but still clunky at that level; compare to YuEun Kim plays Chopin Nocturne 20 similar speed and difficulty but lacking clunkiness.

Can we talk about Herb?
Herb, a 25-year-old progressive prolifer, is imprisoned in the women's section of the Alexandria prison though identifying as a man for the last several years. Is this right or wrong?

Herb was part of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) which is a group of young, queer and trans progressives who expect an anti-abortion uprising as soon as the left is properly informed that the unborn are the most vulnerable of human beings. The natural compassion of leftys will kick in as soon as it is pointed out to them that the unborn are humans have been marginalized and othered more than any other group to the point of being declared non-persons and killed. Herb believed all this.
As part of this information operation, PAAU took part with others in an action at a late term abortion clinic in DC. There exists a video in which the abortionist at Washington Surgi Clinic explains how he provides a level of care which no newborn can survive to any infant who survives the abortion. Herb was sure this information would awaken consciences, so he supported the action but he took very little part in it and left early. Herb felt that prison was too incredibly dangerous to be risked.
But the government arrested Herb along with others there that day and charged them all under the Freedom of Clinic Entrances Act (FACE) and under civil rights statutes. Now Herb was facing as much as 11 years in the serious prisons provided for violent felons. And Herb was found guilty with the others, Moreover, as soon as the jury announced the verdict, US Marshalls swept the whole group off to prison. Her ended up on the women's side.
Suppose I said that in an imperfect world Herb is in the best place for Herb who was facing appalling danger and violence on the men's side. Would I be as as much of a TERF as Riley Gaines or JK Rowling because I admit the danger my fellow prolifer was facing? Am I supposed to think: "If a man can identify as woman and be safe on the woman's side of a prison then why can't a woman identify as a man and be safe on the men's side? What's the difference? But then, if that, then..." What's RightThink? I just want to think right thoughts.

I barked about this a few months ago, and I'll bark about it again. Why is the bank that holds my mortgage and the bank that I do checking and savings with overwhelming me with offers for credit cards and car loans? They know what I make, and they know what I spend, and I assume they know damn well I'll never be able to pay back any more credit I take unless I get a job or three.

Have the banks already made a credit default bailout deal with the Feds?

It seems as if staffs are running the country. Biden's staff, Fetterman's staff, Feinstein's staff - that's who is running things. And I can feel staff planning in the USA right now: we'll change the voters behavior so they'll accept illegals everywhere, accept no consequences for crimes, accept stopping for hours for an electric charge instead of five minutes for a gas fill up, accept no air conditioning yet huge utility bills, accept no meat yet huge grocery bills, accept closed schools but high taxes for school construction and teacher's pensions. And the leaders still think they could stop or revise the changes if necessary. It is necessary to change course right now but the leaders can't make new plans because they have to ask their staffs how to do things and the staffs say: we have to continue on as we are.

To shun all lures that debauch the soul,
The orgied rites of the rich;
To eat my crust as a rover must
With the rough-neck down in the ditch.
To trudge by his side whate'er betide;
To share his fire at night;
To call him friend to the long trail-end,
And to read his heart aright.

To scorn all strife, and to view all life
With the curious eyes of a child;
From the plangent sea to the prairie,
From the slum to the heart of the Wild.
From the red-rimmed star to the speck of sand,
From the vast to the greatly small;
For I know that the whole for good is planned,
And I want to see it all.

To see it all, the wide world-way,
From the fig-leaf belt to the Pole;
With never a one to say me nay,
And none to cramp my soul.
In belly-pinch I will pay the price,
But God! let me be free;
For once I know in the long ago,
They made a slave of me.

In a flannel shirt from earth's clean dirt,
Here, pal, is my calloused hand!
Oh, I love each day as a rover may,
Nor seek to understand.
To enjoy is good enough for me;
The gipsy of God am I;
Then here's a hail to each flaring dawn!
And here's a cheer to the night that's gone!
And may I go a-roaming on
Until the day I die!

Then every star shall sing to me
Its song of liberty;
And every morn shall bring to me
Its mandate to be free.
In every throbbing vein of me
I'll feel the vast Earth-call;
O body, heart and brain of me
Praise Him who made it all!

LLR lonejustice: "...but good for him to decide not to run for re-election because of his advanced age."

LOL! Romney was on track to have his arse handed to him in the most brutal of electoral blowout ways. That's the ONLY reason Romney exited the race. He was engaged in furious internal polling and messaging/comms meetings over the last 2 years to determine his political viability...even considering running as a democratical Murkowski-like fusion candidate!

Spoiler: Romney has no political viability.

Thus: this "principled" announcement!

Too funny.

LLR lonejustice: "I just hope that Biden, Trump, Pelosi, Feinstein, McConnell, Grassley, and a whole host of these geezers will decide to do the same."

The only name in that list that you truly dont want running is Trump!

Comrade Drago:
Romney was always my choice.

Him being so out of step with today's MAGA cult based GOP and also not in line with hard progressives is exactly what most conservatives feel today in America. I can't think of one current Senator who rises to his staure of leadership, vision, fidelity and consistency.

When he lost to Obama in 2012, it became an inflection point for the takover of our government to extremists on both sides. And ultimately ushered in the travesty tha twas Trump/Clinton contest, and disaster that was Trump's presidency.

As can be seen even in this comment section, it also yielded a rise of crude ignorance, juvenile trolling politics, and shameless lying which is now a normal part of the discourse. Perhaps this is what it will take for the GOP to chart a fresh course of sanity and reason, a final loss after the recent loss of the House, Senate and Presidency.

His departure is a sad testament to the state of GOP. There is no one left to fill his shoes.

Yes, the non stop shameless lying about Trump has been hard to take, the gaslighting, the crude ignorance of the most basic aspects of critical thinking, for instance, when you hear a bizarre accusation about a political figure, you might check original sources, rather than to simply believe whatever the newspaper tells you... that kind of ignorance has been the hardest to take.

The Romney Republicans are gone the way of the Whigs. If you think that that party can ever win a national election again, you are nuts, or shamelessly trolling us on behalf of the Democrats. Face it, the Democrats have become the party of the affluent, the people who have gotten rich sending well paying jobs to China and Viet Nam, based on your comments, the Democrats are your natural home. Stop lying to yourself.

@rhhardin, I want to thank you for the links, but particularly the Anderson & Roe. The Bach cantata is sublime, and I hadn't heard it before. I've put it on my kick-the-bucket list, i.e my funeral music selection. The two Japanese kids are playing an out-of-tune piano, and while their playing is pretty note perfect, it is lacking in expression purely because of their age, in my opinion. The Anderson & Roe version has better production values and better tuning to overlay their far-superior rendering. Just my two cents. The version that is on their website is far better than the You Tube one.

It is rather amazing the democraticals still believe having these faux "lifelong republicans" / "principled conservatives" who are just "trying to "conserve conservativism" with non-stop pro-dem narratives and dem politician boosterism is effective politically in online forums.

And, as predicted, we've seen the inevitable uptick in precisely this tactic as we move fully into the 2024 campaign season.

Rt41Rebel--when my wife and I got overextended on credit cards back in the early 90s, she called several of the creditors and got some breaks. They were far more reasonable than the IRS when we had to deal with a tax issue. (Just throwing that in there.)

But at the same time, we were still being inundated with credit card offers on great terms.
That has not stopped since and probably won't in my lifetime.

We only have a few cards now, and pay them off every month, usually.

Mitt Romney is the very personification of the GOPe total betrayal of its base voters.

Romney and McCain and the Bushies et al consciously and purposefully threw the republican party over the side and joined with the dems to advance an America Last, carve it all up and divvy it up with globalist pals philosophy.

When Chuck Schumer blurted out he and Mitch McConnell share the same vision for the republican party, truer words have never been spoken.
