"NY Times columnist Michelle Goldberg has written a defense of Ibram Kendi which is probably the least convincing thing you’ll read today."

"To be clear, I don’t think the problem is with Goldberg, who is a decent writer when she has a meaty story to work on. The problem in this case is that attempting to blame Kendi’s problems on 'the system' just isn’t credible.... If the left wasn’t so driven by fads and celebrity, this wouldn’t have happened. Why wouldn’t it have happened? Because Kendi never would have been given all of that money in the first place. This is the best defense she can come up with. It’s not Kendi’s fault he was unprepared and undisciplined, it’s everyone else’s fault for believing in him.... But Goldberg’s readers just aren’t buying it. There are so many good responses here I’m not sure where to begin...."

Writes John Sexton (at Hot Air)(with lots of quotes from NYT readers).

[I]n 2020, when there was a sudden rush to fund racial justice work, so much money — some but not all from corporations seeking good P.R. — flowed to the charismatic Kendi, who had little evident management experience, to build something from scratch.

“Once the center was established under the near-total control of a single individual, there were many conscientious, talented, dedicated people who came there because they recognized it as a site of power,” Spencer Piston, a Boston University professor who until recently served as faculty lead in the Center for Antiracist Research’s policy office, told me.... “Tens of millions of dollars were flowing in, and there was lots of prestige, and they thought this would be a chance to do some good.”

If we're going to do critical race theory, let's not hold back when the insights are inconvenient. Lavishing money on an unprepared — but charismatic — black person and then treating him like a naif when he fails to perform according to existing conventions — that too is racism... under the theory

I don't think this counts as a failure. The companies that donated the funding got what they wanted out of it (the PR). A bunch of people got good salaries for a couple of years and the resume-enhancement that goes along with being part of a fashionable leftist NGO. And the underlying problem (unrelenting, violent racism in America that stifles black achievement) remains untouched, thus justifying the investment of even more money in this cause in the future. Win-win-win.

I don’t think the problem is with Goldberg, who is a decent writer

No, Goldberg's not a "decent writer". At the level she's operating at she's a borderline adequate writer, and she's a very poor thinker at any level. She preaches to the Liberal/left Choir, and she probably got her job there because she knew somebody in management.

And because she's a woman.

BTW, look at the number of Jews and other minorities writing for the NYT's. Then look at their percentage of the population. Now, that's racism. What other reason could there be for Goldberg getting a NYT's column? Remember Bill Kristol? He got a NYT's column too. If these people were great, you could say it was merit. But they are NOT.

Don B. म्हणाले...

1) Loury and McWhorter have had some things to say about Kendi over the past couple years or so.
2) Sexton claims the quality of Goldberg's prose is dependent on the subject matter. This makes no sense to me, but perhaps he's trying to be kind. I have no opinion of her writing, stylistically, but she strikes me as a typical lefty crackpot.

The only reason Goldberg's readers aren't buying it is because, fundamentally, she is blaming them. If she had come up with an equally unconvincing explanation that blamed it on a couple of MAGA hat wearing whites wandering the streets of Chicago at two in the morning carrying a rope and bleach that would have lapped it up.

Setting aside the fact that his thesis is logically incoherent and there's no actual argument in his book, the name change was what gave it away because it violates a useful rule of thumb: Never trust public figures who have changed their names. (See de Blasio, Bill [Warren Wilhelm]; Romney, Mitt (Willard), who also runs afoul of another rule of thumb: Never trust a man who wears hair-gel. Oh, also Stalin, Lenin, Hitler...

Michelle Goldberg is a joke. BUT - last night I saw two things I thought were connected: The riots and looting in Philly, and "Raj" on the The Big Bang Theory, telling the three "nice" white guys they're being racist, and it was played for laughs - for the enjoyment of their white audience members, presumably. I thought it was evidence America's lost the race argument, and doesn't know it.

Kendri, BLM, Mad Maxine Waters, and others who rose during the Trump administration were previously kept in the crazy closet by the Democratic Party. When Hillary lost and when every "disqualifying" accusation washed off Trump, the Party let Kendri and his ilk loose. They all put plastic smiles on their faces, bowed down for prayers in the Capitol, and swallowed pigs whole.

Without Trump and if Hillary won, the "Occupy Wall St." and AOC wing of the party would have split off in 2017. With Trump, they were given the reins in the early Biden administration.

People will stop smiling and supporting them if and when it affects their wealth and/or security. Wealthy people are voting with their feet by moving out of blue states and cities -- setting up blue areas to be "Escape from New York" hellholes for the foreseeable future.

I expect a centrist or center-right political coalition to take firm control when Trump leaves the stage, or may push him off the stage. Then, they'll govern with moderate firmness for 40 years. Look at 1946 Germany until E. German reunification in the 1990s for the likely model.

Between the $55 million given to Kendi and the $90 million given to Black Lives Matter we see the sad futility of reparations. All those donations certainly didn't eliminate racism or make black lives matter more. There has been nothing to show for all that money except massive grifting.

Another demonstration of this phenomenon is the fact that the majority of people who win lotteries as well as those with big inheritances quickly lose all their money -- lottery winners go bankrupt more often than the national average. Here’s why lottery winners go broke

It's not about racism that Kendi and BLM have failed, it's about them lacking knowledge how to manage and multiply money. I see a lot of Blacks on Instagram and elsewhere are teaching about money, investing in stocks and real estate and small businesses. Those people are all about building wealth the same way white people do, and they never mention reparations.

It's hard to take all this talk about hating grift seriously, in a country that has homeopathic medicines on It's Pharmacy shelves. If you've been comfortable for your whole life with the sale of water as medicine, for $30 a pop, then you really don't care about fraud. It's just a talking point to attack blacks. You try to wipe away our entire history in this country by certain events, usually ones that don't reflect well on certain individuals, that you blame the group for, while claiming you're not being racist.

The fact that black people, who haven't had anything for most of the time they've been in this country, now will do almost anything to get some seems to be lost on you guys. I guess you think they should be taking a measured approach. Fuck you. They want what they want and they want it now, like everybody else. You complain about gangsters killing each other, but you idolize Al Capone and John Dillinger, and all the rest. Black people see how it's done. They know your history. The one you don't want to always take the time to shine-up to show the world. How is Las Vegas built again? 11 artists lost their lives to make Death Row records, and the sound of Dr. Dre, the biggest thing in the world. They were and are all kids from my neighborhood and I'm proud of them and what they've done:

They came up the American way.

Juanita Broderick, a woman who was raped by Bill Clinton while employed in an old folks home, is going to die without knowing justice - and everybody knows it as he's feted in the Hamptons - but I'm supposed to believe this Is an ethical country. Or think I should be harder on black people who, in many ways, are still just knowing freedom, and many other things, for the first time. I can't do it.

I thought when I left the violence of the ghetto in the late '70s that I was going to discover a world that was something more like what was on TV. A world that worked. But the world of white people was just as dysfunctional. One of the first things I learned is that they disowned their kids, a concept I just couldn't wrap my head around. And, as I look back on it, already a clear sign of a fraying society. I was initiated into politics by the killing of Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone on the same day in San Francisco. They were killed by a cop, who I now know was probably more credible than we give him credit for, seeing now that he was surrounded by the Jim Jones cult that was supported by Nancy Pelosi, and many other people still in power now. They killed 900 blacks.

All I'm trying to say is, I wasn't given the benefit of rose-colored glasses, when it comes to the United States of America. This is a weird fucking place. And one way that it's weird is in not wanting to honor its debt to black people. If you don't think that doesn't influence black people's actions, then you're not using logic. Once you've reneged on the social contract, you can't expect anybody else to honor it.

As I said, without paying reparations, you might as well say America doesn't exist to black people. Because America is supposed to be a place that's good and honors It's debt. if you think that America is becoming something else, then look in the mirror because you're the one who's making it that way.

People who believe in America still hold out hope that it will be the place that they hope it could be, without inflicting too much damage on itself.

The existence of the Obamas, Oprah, and the many, many successful blacks in this country DESTROYS your claim that A-As continue to be treated the way they were a hundred years ago.

You need to look in the mirror, Crack: WE didn't make you you, YOU made yourself you.

Crack double-downed on one of his pet notions:

"It's hard to take all this talk about hating grift seriously, in a country that has homeopathic medicines on It's Pharmacy shelves."
****************

WTF? Homeopathic products make up a tinty, tiny fraction of what's on pharmacy shelves.

Ineffective home remedies and quackery have been around for as long as people have searching for cures. Why do you think the US is alone in that respect?

Irrelevancies like this just make you look every bit as kookish as the New Agers you despise.

"You act like this is some new idea, and not a long-standing debt going all the way back to the end of the Civil War."

Pointing out something is not the same thing as declaring it to be a new idea. As you didn't dispute that idea, I will take that as your agreement with it. As far as debts go, earlier in this thread, this was posted:

"Besides, when one considers all the programs and created opportunities, and the money spent on them, and the denial of opportunities to qualified whites in order to give the opportunity to a usually less-qualified minority, all of which has been designated and given specifically to black people since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, reparations has already happened."

Clearly, others believe those debts have been paid. Of course, YMMV.

"The fact that it hasn't been resolved is a stain white people put on America's name, not anybody else."

You say there's been no resolution. As noted above, others disagree.

"Seriously, if you have a problem with it, take it up with your hero Martin Luther King and leave me the fuck alone. I was born into this shit."

Martin Luther King is not my hero and you responded to me, not the other way around. If you want to be left the fuck alone, you might think about doing the same with others. Or not, your call. What you were born into? Nothing I can do about that.

I don't - you guys are the ones arguing there's something more admirable here.I think this is a place with the ethics of cults and quacks and con artists, so your comments on blacks are null and void.

Show me where any of that was called "reparations" and blacks understood it as such and I'll agree with it. If you can't, then I'll point out that's a lie, and remind you another iie doesn't help white people's image at all.

You got your reparations crack. You all squandered it and continue to do so (see Baltimore schools, zero percent math proficiency). You want more so you can squander more? People are waking up to your grift.

Jamie म्हणाले...

Crack, I wish you well, for whatever that's worth.

Reparations isn't going to happen. The debt owed to black Americans whose ancestors were slaves is unpayable - no amount of money recompenses someone for having been considered property. And so all that can happen, in a society that hopes to keep functioning (and that is, in matter of fact, the most tolerant, open, and generous society on earth - and name me a better one if you disagree), is what's already happened: an end to slavery won in blood, an end to Jim Crow won in lost opportunities on both sides of a racial divide that we all hoped would no longer exist by now.

Whatever you're wanting, you aren't going to get it. The reason is not that a debt isn't owed; it's that the societal cost is greater than the debt. I've asked before and I haven't seen you reply, though you may have: what do you hope the outcome of reparations would be? Because a society can't just try to recompense everyone or every group that's ever been wronged (and you know black Americans aren't the only ones) without considering the present-day effects. And the present-day effects would necessarily* include a resentment so deep, damaging, and defining that you cannot possibly want that for yourself or any children in your life. Especially not considering the current opportunity set available without further reparations.

* Necessarily because so few can trace their ancestry back to anyone who owes you for slavery or even Jim Crow. For instance - my family is almost entirely post-1910s in the US (one side branch from Quebec, essentially free of slavery - 4,000 slaves over 200 years, associated with the wealthy in homes - before that), and in Wisconsin, in a town with no black families until the 1950s, and then only one, and fewer than half my last-generation relatives went to college and none has received any inheritance besides furniture and pictures from my deceased grandparents - how could I owe the descendants of slaves anything?

Crack sneaks away from addressing the huge problem of fatherless black homes, and its consequences..

What an intellectual poseur!

Instead he addresses an insignificant issue that's been around for ages. If homeopathy were a "thing", pharmacy shelves would be filled with such products.

Instead, they are "fringe", not mainstream in an America he claims has gone full-tilt New Age.

That's why people are taking it. And not saluting the flag. Or respecting life. Or the social contract. I don't know how you think anyone is going to care about the destruction of this country - by black gangs, Mexican cartels, whoever - when the citizens don't think it's theirs.

Just like after the Civil War, whites ensure some form of American slavery never really ends,...

Most major endowments require timelines for accomplishing specific goals and the requirement that you use certified auditors, accountants, and qualified nonprofit professionals as board members if the leadership does not have nonprofit administration experience.

These rules are often not enforced for black-run or academic organizations. I can name ten off the top of my head that I dealt with in Atlanta alone.

There are no excuses. This is just liberal racism. The rules, including IRS and federal grantor scrutiny, only apply to some people and causes.

None of this had anything to do with an inability to follow rules. Some don't have to do so, and they know it. Why excuse it?

Thank you, but no, you're too smart not to get it: Sherman went on his march to the sea, and as he went, black people gathered behind the army and followed wherever he went. This was a problem for Sherman, because he was fighting a war and not babysitting freed blacks. He was no friend of blacks. But he was still a fair man and asked them what they needed, in order to be OK. They said give us some land, and maybe a mule to work it, and we'll be fine. He agreed, and went on his way. But, after John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln, the next president was a southern sympathizer, and he took it all away. Blacks have never forgotten that, and consider it a debt that needs to be repaid, as surely as Bruce's Beach in Los Angeles was recently given back to blacks, because that too was a crime. Black people had worked that land and made investments. All of it was snatched away. Call it symbolic, but it has to be addressed. Why?

That was the first agreement made between freed blacks and America, and because of whites, specifically, America reneged. That's not hard to understand. And whites should want to make it right.

Tina, you're the one who's too smart for this. They're all grifts, and you know it. "Accomplishing specific goals". Like what? What have all these assholes in suits who pay themselves millions to buy each other drinks accomplished? Besides getting their rackets taken over by leftists, because silly women with too much money prefer sob stories?

Jupiter म्हणाले...

"They said give us some land, and maybe a mule to work it, and we'll be fine."

Ha! Forty acres and a mule. Back in '98, I read about how the IRS had audited some guy who had claimed a $56,000 refundable credit on his taxes. And he said it was the "Forty acres and a mule" credit. So, they ran a query against their database for the amount in question, and they found out that hundreds of blacks had been claiming this credit, and the IRS had been sending them all checks for 50 grand. Some grifter was going around to black churches, showing them how to apply for it. I don't know how that all turned out, probably still going on. I was amazed that the IRS had so little idea about what they were sending people money for. The only way they could query it was by looking for credits in a certain dollar range.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

General Sherman had neither the legal nor the moral right to obligate the United States for anything. Go after Sherman's descendants for your 40 acres and a mule.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

"Hey, Crack, How much are you asking for? Would you like me to start a GoFundMe for you?"

Won't matter even if you give him every penny he asks for, and every other black in America the same. Because, in twenty years, there'll be a new generation who hasn't gotten their check. And they'll surely demand it, just as it's being demanded today.

Crack himself would be back in five years with his hand out again saying "You can't buy your way out of guilt; you still owe me..."

The only reparations I would ever support is a one-way ticket to Africa.
