I was staring at the clock at 6:30 thinking I better get going if I'm gonna catch the end.
A lot of commercials in soccer means the game's over. Overtime. 30 minutes. US way outplayed Sweden in overtime.

I was soooo looking forward to Leftist Megan make her "Worship the wonderfulness of me" pose after a made penalty kick.

I'll enjoy watching the rest of the World Cup.

An appropriate time to mention Patrice Bergeron retired. The ultimate team player- a captain of captains who earned the respect of every player, not just his teammates. First on, last off, never forgetting a man, fought hard. The kind of player every coach wish he had the good fortune to have on his team.

There was a time when there was no bigger supporter of the US women's national soccer team. I watched every match, including the friendlies. Then Rapinoe showed up.

The last straw for me was when Rapinoe et al sued the US soccer federation for accepting a deal that Rapinoe negotiated as head of the players' union after rejecting the same deal as the men offered by the federation. The leftwing politics, the disrespect for the flag and the anthem...Rapinoe has managed to destroy decades of good will built up by previous players.

This was the perfect ending to this harridan's career.

US soccer needs to fire the entire roster and coaching staff and begin anew. Get Carli Lloyd or Mia Hamm to be the coach and return to the play and values that were successful in the past.

What an achievement by the US women's team, finally getting paid the same as the US men's team for the same disappointing performance with an early exit.

Jill Bidden hardest hit. She won't be able to take Australian junket on AF One to root for US women's team in World Cup finals.

Good news is that real football starts in just a few weeks.

Pay them more.

Remember when they fussed and fussed and fussed until the contract that they originally signed was replaced by the same one the men had? Well, as I understand it under that new contract they will be paid less now that they’re out of the Cup. Perhaps someone can confirm?

They made sure everyone knew how much they personally disrespected the country they represented. Well now that they’ve been eliminated so quickly they will discover the value of having a little good will built up on their behalf.

Big Mike said...

@BudBrown, looking at time of possession and shots on goal, it’s easy to see that statistically the US women thoroughly outplayed the Swedes. But there are plenty of team sports where the statistically better team can still go home a loser. They needed to score goals and they didn’t.

deepelemblues said...

I'm not happy my the national team lost because an unfocused, unprofessional roster wasn't reined in for the years leading up to this embarrassing performance.

Old and slow said...

Women's World Cup football is a complete joke. Even the players don't take it seriously. If a man blew a penalty shot like that and his team was eliminated, he would be crushed and it would show. He would also be reviled for it by his country. She laughs it off, and she is right to laugh. It really is trivial, the whole women's World Cup is meaningless.

Wilbur said...

I'm no soccer expert, but I've been watching this US team for many years. Veteran Rose Lavelle was inactive due to a second yellow card in their last game. IMO, she's their best player.

Static Ping said...

It sorta feels like a wrestling heel finally getting what they deserve. It is sad to think of a national team that way, but it feels appropriate, especially after running up the score on Thailand last time.

From a pro wrestling perspective, the question is when to execute this humiliation. Not escaping group play, which almost happened, is a greater embarrassment, but it seems almost anticlimactic. Probably the proper way to build it up was for the team to make the semifinals, just escaping elimination prior to that through luck and/or cheating, and then have the luck/cheating backfire and get relegated to the consolation round where they would also lose and not get a medal as a sort of punchline. Alternatively, have them make the finals, make it seem like the heel would win, and then lose in some humiliating fashion at the last minute, then refuse to attend the award ceremony, perhaps being ejected from the facility.

Why do people who have no respect for the United States want to play for a team representing the United States?

john said...

Scoring 1 goal in 4 games shows a team that sucked pretty bad. Three botched penalty kicks this morning also sucked pretty bad. Rapinoe missed one of those, so yea, hate her if you got to but it was a group effort.

Why was Rapinoe even on the field? Was there something in her contract that forces the coach to give her play time?

Finally, get rid of men coaches of women's sports teams. It's fucking creepy.

Done with Sunday rant and it's still early.

Actually, they did outplay Sweden by quite a bit, which was more than you can say about the Netherlands or Portugal matches. They had multiple chances to score, and still could've won it with a goal in the shootout...and then they lost by the tiniest margin imaginable.

That's soccer, folks. (FIFA can't be pleased: now Americans are going to ignore the rest of the tournament, especially with most of the matches being played in the middle of the night anyway...)

Quayle said...

‘I mean, this is like a sick joke. For me personally, this is like dark comedy that I missed a penalty,’ Rapinoe said as she blinked back tears.”

The joke is only made sick by hubris. Humility is always a more stable foundation and prevents the bitterness of this crusty, bitter irony. It might even be a benevolent universe, hoping that you’ll learn something far more important than soccer.

“This is the balance to the beautiful side of the game. I think it can be cruel.”

It’s only cruel if you don’t learn something from it. if you do, then, it’s actually very kind.

They still have their same contract, which the courts found actually paid more since the USWT gets salary, health insurance, injury insurance and have severance agreements. They also get paid for playing friendlies during the off season and get a cut of ticket revenue. The USMT has a lump sum contract, largely dependent on World Cup performance, because most of them play in professional leagues and get all of the above benefits through their teams. Rapinoe was actually smart in negotiating the WMT's original contract.

The fuss was about the USMT getting larger World Cup lump sum payments than the USWNT did. The reality is that those payments are based on USSF's cut of each team's respective World Cup revenue. The Women's Cup has averaged about $300 - 400 Million in revenue, the Men's averages about $6 Billion. The men ended up getting strong armed into giving some of their cut to the USMT to shut Rapinoe up, but I doubt anyone's going to see much since we're still a ways off from the USMT making a spectacular a showing in the Cup and the heftier payments don't come until they make the finals or win.

Most sports are designed around traits in which men are better than women (on average and at the extreme). _Of course_ men's teams are going to be better than the women's, and apt to attract more fans willing to pay to watch.

If you want women's sports teams competitive with men's ask: Can there be sports with enough action to attract fans, which rely on traits in which women are equal to or better than men? If so, try to boost those.

(I use the classic definitions of men and women, not the unusual fashion of our nominal betters.)

Once having been a big supporter of the US Women's Team, I'll have to say I am neither surprised nor unhappy with this outcome. I have had a big interest in this sport for over 30 years, as my younger daughter was a great player and one of the great joys my wife and I had during her middle and high school years was being involved with girls soccer and watching her and her teammates. Now in her early 40s, she is still the greatest offensive player in her school's history, male or female, and earned nearly every accolade available to her. And the discipline and good habits she developed persist to this day. I would say she could probably step on the field with any high-school age-level team and still put on a pretty good performance.

But this interest died when Megan Rapinoe showed up. The team's arrogance and anti-Americanism were enough for me. Can they recover after this debacle? I'm not sure. The rest of the world has caught up. The rest of the field looks pretty interesting, I might start watching now. There could be some great stories come out of this World Cup.

Oh - and my daughter, through her entire career, never missed a penalty kick. Not once. Not even close to missing one.

This was a brilliant move by the USWNT to avoid having to listen to the US National Anthem again.

Can you imagine how scarred the psyches of the USWNT members would be had they been forced to hear that tune again?

No wonder they take a knee as it decreases the distance they might fall once they pass out from the horror of potentially honoring America on the world stage.

Big Mike said...

I got the answer to my question posed at 8:49, and it shocked me. Despite losing in the round of 16 the USWNT will make $4.3 million more than they’d have made under the old contract. All that extra money comes out of what the men earned on the international stage. Wow. No wonder Rapinoe didn’t seem to care very much that she badly blew the penalty kick.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on her laughter after her missed shot.

Remembering back fifty years, when I dropped an easy end-zone catch in an important game, I will attest that such laughter is a normal and common defensive reaction to public humiliation. Nothing to do with any perception of humor.
