"At Wimbledon earlier this summer, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Shelby Rogers of the United States were among the first competitors to wear dark shorts under their tennis whites..."

"... as the All England Club finally relaxed its all-white rules in recognition of female menstrual reality. At the EuroHockey Championship later this month, shorts will be an option for every participant as well as the traditional skorts, and the decision about what to wear will be left up to each individual player. And some track and field competitors have swapped their bikini-like 'buns' for shorts and leggings in competition."

From "From the Women’s World Cup to Wimbledon, a Victory Everyone Can Share/Across sports, female athletes are fighting a battle over what they put on their bodies and how much of those bodies they display" (NYT).

We're prompted to ask: Wait, why are we doing things this way:
Wait, why are athletes wearing white shorts and wondering if spectators can tell they are menstruating instead of focusing on doing their job? Wait, why do field hockey players practice in shorts and compete in skorts (and, for that matter, wear low-cut compression tops that show off their cleavage every time they bend over)? Wait, why do men run in shorts and play volleyball in shorts and women do it in tiny bottoms that make them worry about cellulite and bulges and showing their stomachs? Wait, why are the armholes of basketball jerseys so enormous that they act like windows to the sports bra? Wait, why is the default garment the smallest garment as opposed to the most neutral garment?

Wait. What happens when women choose to show more skin than the LPGA think is appropriate?

So, women tennis players at wimbleton before 2023 were doing what exactly when they were menstreuting? Dropping out of the tournament? I don't think so.

Anyway, glad this issue is settled and we can go on to the next great struggle for women superority. Did you know wimmen get paid as much as the men but only play 3 sets instead of 5? But still complain they are treated as 2nd class citizens. Who says women are dumb?

I dont have access to the article. But I'm hoping this doesn't affect beach volleyball.

I've got to giver Serena credit here. I've heard her say several time s that she would be a mediocre player on the Men's tour (and she's the greatest female player to ever play) and among the reasons why is because women play three sets and men play five.

Wait, the photos in the article don't support the assertion that field hockey players have cleavage.

Wait, the beach volleyball players have negligible body fat and certainly aren't worried about cellulite or showing their stomachs.

Wait, are sports bras considered enticing foundation garments?

ChatGPT can't take over journalism soon enough.

They just have to rollout the old Tampex ads from the 1960s. Beatiful girls riding their bikes in white pants.

Tennis whites are a leftover from aristocratic traditions, and there is some beauty in retaining the old school standards.

That said, wearing white pants is something no woman would ever willingly choose. You're talking a tampon, a liner, and a prayer that the flow doesn't get too heavy. In high level athletics when the court and your opponent should have all your attention, it's ridiculous to expect women to also worry if a bloody stain is going to appear.

This just in: Women, especially athletic women, are attractive.

... during her period. Hear hear. I wore white pants exactly once during my period, when I was new to the experience, and disaster struck - in public, at a concert. In truth I caught it before things got noticeable to the casual observer, but it was a moment (a half hour or so) of social panic for me. Suffice it to say I never made that mistake again.

I agree about the skirts in sports. They're a vestige from the days when girls and women who were athletic and competitive were still expected to counter those "masculine" traits somehow - skirts instead of shorts or pants, makeup, hair bows. Surely we're beyond that, except for trans girls and women who apparently have to dress in the most stereotypical way possible in order to prove their bona fides. (I myself, a natal woman or whatever we say now, do not wear dresses every day, nor makeup, nor do I do jack with my hair most days. As a child, I wore shorts and t-shirts every day of the summer and most school days, but I had one cowgirl skirt and vest set that I loved to wear to school because the skirt flew out in a circle when I spun around. How on earth did my parents know, when I was a preschooler, which gender I identified with?)

That said, hmm. For team sports, do you have one team uniform with no variations, or are the girls or women on a team allowed to choose between, say, shorts and skirt? Some may prefer that "vestige" of femininity.

But why should any one team member's, or any one participant's, preference matter? What sporting garb allows you to compete at the highest level? Wear that. My husband was a swimmer in high school and - a modest young fellow - refused to let his mom come to his meets because he didn't want her to see him in the little speedo bikini things they had to wear back then. But they had to wear them because they could swim faster in those than in trunks. (I suspect he'd feel the same about the skin-tight suits they wear now. His reluctance was all about leaving nothing to the imagination in front of his mom.)

Women picked those bikini shorts for track. Felt it improved performance. Men went to leggings after that dude flopped his unit out of this shorts in the 100

So the Curse of Eve includes the gazes of millions of people. Is it only the male gaze, or has it been known to happen that women judge each other rather harshly? Noticing details men might not notice?

By the way, are trans women going to get to play women's soccer and tennis, taking all that money?

I've assumed women aren't so meek that they were forced to wear beach volleyball bikinis and track tiny shorts at the behest of men and against their own will. Come on.

Personally, I've thought it was stupid that women in beach volleyball wear practically nothing. But I will not countenance the idea that they've not made their own choice there.

Women in track and field wear bunhuggers by choice. Some chose to wear half tights instead, but not many.

Leaving aside the white pants issue, the majority of young women like sexy clothes.
That's why these dress codes and customs persist despite the left not liking them.

Why are we always trying to find things to be outraged by?

This is a micro micro micro version of the Adam and Eve parable about human nature. They were bored in Eden and had to fuck it up in order to make things interesting.

Much ado about nothing. When "transitioning" men take over women's sports the fashion conversation will change. Menstruation will not be a worry unless Democrats are confused about that too.

I've heard Serena say she would lose to Andy Roddick in "like 5-6 minutes" and it wouldn't even be close.

Female swimmers are forced to show more skin than they'd like, since their swimsuits are now so high tech that the more fabric they have covering their bodies, the faster they go through the water. Anyone seeing male swimmers in their thigh length suits, that is also to allow the fabric to help them go faster. I enjoy counterexamples.

Old joke from that era:

Boy 1: If I had five dollars, I'd buy a brand new baseball bat!

Boy 2: If I had five dollars, I'd buy a great big bag of candy!

Boy 3: If I had five dollars, I'd buy a box of Tampex tampons!

Boy 1: A box of Tampex tampons? Why?

Boy 2: Yeah, why?

Boy 3: Because then I could go swimming and horseback riding and play golf and tennis and so much more!

I was expecting a story about Black Lives Matter or some racial commentary. I literally thought it was some protest over at Wimbledon, and a great racial awakening was happening in UK tennis.

Oops.
