Owen,

Following up from last night. The most useful tool I have found for understanding LLMs is Stephen Wolframs short book, What is ChatGPT Doing and why does it work. You need to understand vectors, and it is tightly written. But a good introduction to tokens, neural nets, "attention" machine learning and more.

The PA Game Commission did not distinguish itself today. For the first time ever, hunting licenses were to be sold online as opposed to buying them solely from a retailer. You could buy both a general hunting license and a doe license on the same day, another first. Doe licenses are limited. In the past, doe licenses have sold out certain areas called Wildlife Managements Units. You want to be early to get your doe license in your preferred WMU.

Starting at 8AM this morning you could log on and buy your license - or try to. I logged on at 8AM and was number 7,487 in the queue. When your spot in the queue opened up, you had 10 minutes to execute or you went to the back of the queue. So I sat glued to my monitor for 4 1/2 hours until my number came up. I executed! Hooray.

My son waited until he got home from work to log on. His number in the queue was 154,000. It may be a day or two for him.

There are typically 900,000+ hunters annually in PA. What a plan!!!

"Martha Ann Bomgardner Alito decided to see if a 160-acre plot of land in Grady County, Oklahoma, would produce. In a lease filed with the Grady County clerk, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito entered into an agreement with Citizen Energy III for revenue generated from oil and gas obtained from a plot of hardscrabble she inherited from her late father. It is one of the thousands of oil and gas leases across Oklahoma, one of the top producers of fossil fuels in the United States."

In states that recognize mineral rights ownership as separate from surface rights of property, it is often the energy companies that research shale deposits, likely, in this case, Woodward shale near Chickasha, OK. Fracking rights extraction is tricky where multiple mineral rights ownership exists. And, of course, dry holes result in only one payment intended to entice owners to sign the lease.

Portnoy Tweet: Portnoy pours in how the NYC Pizza Party Protest came about

“Some f*cking little liberal arts, Ivy-League, pink-haired, crazy Liberal who’s never worked one day in the real world” is trying to get rid of coal oven pizzerias in New York City.

Outstanding journalism in The New Yorker.

Kudos.

(It's from a decade ago, but still highly relevant, in my opinion).

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday [6/26/23] left in place a decision that allows more than 230 men to sue Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by a university doctor, the late Richard Strauss.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The same day [Feb. 13, 2020] that U.S. House Republicans named Rep. Jim Jordan as the next top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, a former captain of Ohio State University’s wrestling team Adam DiSabato, told a hearing in Columbus that Jordan knew wrestlers on his team were being sexually abused when he served as its assistant coach from 1987 to 1995.

“Jim Jordan called me crying, groveling… begging me to go against my brother, Michael …That’s the kind of cover-up that’s going on there,” said DiSabato, who is among a group of former OSU wrestlers who filed lawsuits that allege the school ignored Strauss’ abuse.

I've never been a fan of this global economy thingy. I am a huge supporter of American sovereignty. So comes the news ......

Headline Pittsburgh Trib-Review: Chemo drug shortages hit cancer treatment centers across Pittsburgh region

" In December 2022, the FDA temporarily shut down platinum drug shipments for safety reasons from a factory in India, the primary supplier ..... The FDA announced in June that it was collaborating with Qilu Pharmaceutical Co. in China and pharmaceutical company Apotex in Canada to increase the availability of the drugs."

How did we get here? We are being led by not the best and brightest, but by the greediest who will sell us down the river for a nickel.

SCOTUS has declined to hear the case that argues girls must wear skirts at a charter school with a dress code.

At Catholic school we always wore shorts under our skirts because a skirt -- a pleated skirt that needed to be ironed -- was the stupidest, most impractical, most immodest garment imaginable. Any athletic movement exposed something if you didn't have the shorts on.

Put everyone in slacks or shorts and compare the number of openly trans students at that school vs another that includes skirts for "girls".

I'm sure one of our resident Lefties can tell us exactly how many degrees cooler our atmosphere will be 50 years from now if all of the coal and wood fired pizza ovens in NYC are shut down.

I mean, with the Science and all.

Note: I'm making an editorial change and capitalizing Science from now on since Science seems to be our new God. I mean, it's immutable and unchanging and all, and is not meant to be questioned.

"Democrats have transmogrified into a Soviet-style socialist binary of rich and poor, run by an elite nomenklatura that dictates its orders to its foot soldiers of the underclass. An entire new left-wing vocabulary—clingers, deplorables, irredeemables, dregs, chumps, ultra-MAGA, semi-fascists—has come to express their hatred of the middle class."

"You need to understand vectors"

Right, it uses trigonometry (in a very large number of dimensions) to "think," but who knows? So might your brain.

You can ask Chat how it does it, and it will explain it to you, breaking it down into bite sized pieces, if you like, explaining all terms used.

Soft treatment of Prigozhin mutiny by Moscow may be also a PR move, intended to contrast with hysterically repressive actions by US Establishment against J6 protesters.

'Ukraina' literally means Periphery and/or Borderland. For hundreds of years Ukraina was a borderland for Russia, now Ukraina is actively developing into borderland for NATO. In Ukraina, the principal borderland mentality remains the same.

Ukraina had more leverage by being a Russian client than it will ever have by being NATO client. Russia had a great range of interests in Ukraina, beginning with hallowed historical significance. NATO has sole interest in using Ukraina as proxy warrior against Russia. As soon as NATO will lose interest in armed conflict with Russia, Ukraina will have nothing to offer.

The best future for Ukraina would be to shed the old Borderland mentality and develop into sovereign intermediary between Russia and the West, kind of like Switzerland of Eastern Europe. There was a promise for such development in the works for 23 years, until Maidan mutiny in 2014.

very nice, rhhardin.

Kate mentions skirts and Catholic schoolgirl uniforms. My wife went to such a school, but didn't wear shorts under her skirt (graduated '72).

A friend's younger sister--feminist, hot, smart, now a lawyer and batshit crazy (IMHO) --once complained that Britney Spears was sexualizing Catholic schoolgirl suits. That made me laugh and laugh.

The Divider in Chief, Barack Hussein Obama, thinks blacks need reparations, even though his family owned slaves, and some say his fathers family sold slaves into slavery.
In an interview with Christiane Amanpour on CNN, Obama said, “It’s very hard to sustain a democracy when you have such massive concentrations of wealth.”
Remember when he used to say "I do think at a certain point you've made enough money"
WHEN is HE going to live up to what he says? WHY do the Obama's NEED a house in Hawaii, one in California, one in DC, one in Chicago and one in Martha's Vineyard. Now these aren't little houses, they are mansions. When is enough enough Barack?? Stop dividing us. Give up some of YOUR wealth if you want to share so badly, and leave us the fuck alone. YOU destroyed America with you hatred and division. Go away.
