There are many songs about heartbeats. You may think of Buddy Holly or Herman's Hermits, but there are many many more. So to use the syllables "Padam" injects some originality. Other than that, it is just a song about feeling turned on by someone you meet in a bar and wanting to go somewhere private with them: "I hear it and I know... I thought this was pretty obvious, but I'm not finding anybody else saying so. In the Piaf song, padam padam padam is the beat in a haunting melody and it is sung like a heartbeat. There is also a reference in the song to a wooden heart at the end of the song.
