Tucker Carlson texted a Fox News producer on January 7, 2021, quoted in "Carlson’s Text That Alarmed Fox Leaders: ‘It’s Not How White Men Fight’ The discovery of the text message contributed to a chain of events that ultimately led to Tucker Carlson’s firing" (NYT).

"A couple of weeks ago, I was watching video of people fighting on the street in Washington. A group of Trump guys surrounded an Antifa kid..."
"... and started pounding the living shit out of him. It was three against one, at least. Jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight. Yet suddenly I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it. Then somewhere deep in my brain, an alarm went off: this isn’t good for me. I’m becoming something I don’t want to be. The Antifa creep is a human being. Much as I despise what he says and does, much as I’m sure I’d hate him personally if I knew him, I shouldn’t gloat over his suffering. I should be bothered by it. I should remember that somewhere somebody probably loves this kid, and would be crushed if he was killed. If I don’t care about those things, if I reduce people to their politics, how am I better than he is?"

Evergreen theme.
Read Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn.
I imagine some people would be triggered "RACIST!!" and wouldn't see that this email actually makes Carlson look kind and reflective, but it's hard to imagine a two-year-old email contributed to his firing without becoming public first. I'm going to go with "bad attempt at spin."
Do we have better evidence that is indeed a Tucker Carlson text message than say the evidence that Hunter Biden’s laptop and emails were Russian disinformation? No point opining on Tucker Carlson’s potential behavior until we have some certainty that what he is accused of doing actually happened.
Boo hoo.
They want me dead, and the feeling is mutual.
And no, three against one isn't dishonorable. "Honor" is bullshit.
Technically he hasn't been fired he just had his show cancelled. He is still under contract to fox and is still being paid.
On Tuesday, Valuetainment Television made a $100 million 5 year contract plus ownership shares offer to Tucker.
I don't think he's hurting.
If true, this makes Fox look worse. Imho.
Ah, yes, the last refuge of scoundrels in America and the all-purpose cudgel: accusations of raaacissssm.
Imagine if Carlson were black, and the men attacking the kid were black, and the exact same text were sent substituting "not how black men fight" for "not how white men fight. It is easy to imagine lots of white men and black men sending the same kind of text in both events, the one that occurred and the hypothetical one. However, it is also easy to see that the hypothetical one would never get the sender fired, and the criticism, even from the right in the hypothetical wouldn't be all that intense since such criticism itself would be targeted as racist by the media.
However, Carlson is right- it isn't how white men in the US are raised- to gang up in a fist fight against a single individual. It is a hard core principle we learned on the playgrounds growing up that if you have a disagreement that requires a physical fight, you do it one on one, and friends and family stay out of it. I was on both sides of this more than once growing up- fighting and enforcing the one on one rule. I imagine any white guy my age was on both sides or observed being applied. In short, Carlson wasn't offering a comment on how black men fight- he studiously, in my opinion, avoided offering a comment on how black men would fight because he doesn't have any experience as one.
Now, not all white men live up to the principle, and Carlson was criticizing himself for not doing so in his heart instinctively. Carlson's detractors think this text message will make him look bad- I disagree- I think most people will read it and think that if that was why he was fired, it was unjust.
Sure, that must have been it. I wonder what it was that disturbed them? That Carlson had a self-reflective moment? That Carlson had thoughts about violence? Or is the charge: Racist! That's funny, they didn't lead with that, in this day and age of Woke Rage.
Did they say, 'This is MAGA Country !!'?
But, but "colorblind is the new racism." /S
There is a myriad of videos showing black men and women sucker punching oldsters, particularly Jews, ganging up on others, white and black, and forming mobs to loot stores. NYT and it's ilk pretends this conduct doesn't exist. Carlson obviously doesn't.
Maybe Tucker should have said, "It's how white men ought to fight."
So he stereotyped white men? Maybe he can join the Squad.
Trying to picture Tucker Carlson in a fight. Presumably he adopted the bow tie to guard against his foe grabbing it.
So TC's defenestration had nothing to do with fallout from his attacks on the leadership of both political parties. I'm so pleased to discover Logan Roy's profound commitment to virtue.
Merely saying "white men" is a criminal offense.
But anyone can say "Black men"?
got it.
It alarmed them so much they waited almost 2 and a half years to do something about it.
LMAO. Here come the racist tropes. Hey Fox...desperation is a stinky perfume.
It’s not how white men fight
It should be that's not how honorable men fight. Not all white men are honorable. Same with every other color and ethnic group. The mob mentality is in our DNA.
That's a really long text
I just usually have a sentence at the most and usually just a gif or emoji and a couple words.
If he thought about how many Antifa thugs attacked conservative journalist Andy Ngo four years ago (while the cowardly Portland police stood by doing nothing), he’d have realized he was right the first time.
Typical of Althouse to believe, with no evidence, that the Times has reported this accurately.

Nice! Now compare and contrast with VP Kamala Harris' comment after the murderous tranny slaughtered five Christians very recently, not just beat them up, KILLED five innocent Christians in cold blood: "They fight back!"
She said this about the perp who murdered people, before the funerals had even been held. Hideous! Yet the media finds it so very important to note that Tucker shared his thoughts privately about how he felt seeing an Antifa monster pounded for a change instead of being the one ganging up on Trump supporters (as in most Antifa footage I've seen). When you're a Democrat you can get away with saying or doing anything!
By the way, everything that Fox Corp. is leaking about their current employee in order to prepare for the negotiated settlement has had the uncanny effect of making Carlson look more human and the corporation look petty, vindictive, retaliatory and emotional. It's almost like they are overcompensating for something. Hmmmm. Why is ALL news rooted in fakenews now?
The commentariat has it right- they waited until election season to Megyn Kelly him. He’s apparently still under contract, so if he’s so despicable why keep him on the payroll? Ann won’t think to ask but we know why…
Ah, the predicted Fox News smear campaign continues.
Each reveal makes Tucker seem like a normal person trying to be decent and charming. I dunno. Maybe that's out of bounds at Fox News. There bubble must be really weird.
that's NOT how white people (are supposed to) fight..
it IS how Black people fight
“It’s not how white men fight.”
The problem isn’t black-white. Calling out racism is so yesterday. The problem is that he seems to be assuming all the participants were “men”, and that “women” don’t fight. That’s sexist and transphobic!
It’s not how white men fight.
A rare mistake by Tucker. Antifa is nearly all white, but many piling many on one is how they prefer to fight. The KKK was certainly within epsilon of 100% white, but they’d only fight fair if forced to.
It’s a mistake to fight Democrats and other lefty slime balls fair. You gotta get down in the gutter with them and smother them in their own shit.
It’s not how white men fight.
Among the many evils of making Whiteness the Original Sin of the Wokeness Religion is that it provokes an equal and opposite reaction of dopey racist White Pride from people who should know better.
We can dub this The Carlson Rule: You may note behavioral differences in racial groups as long as it portrays non-whites as superior.
"Contributed to a chain of events that eventually led to . . ."?
Maybe it is time to start defending ourselves, since the Progressives won't?? Little Antifa scum are mostly white rich progressives. They were defending themselves against Kamala's little brownshirts.
Sorry Tucker, ALL people fight this way -- although maybe no true Scotsman does.
I find it interesting that the focus is on that single sentence and not the broader text. While, the single sentence is inartful and perhaps insensitive, the broader comment is a look inside the mind/soul of someone who is working through in real time the implications of our current world - where everything is political. He's acknowledging his need to re-humanize the "others" we've all fallen into hating so much. In my opinion, that is the interesting thing about this text. That is what the conversation should be about.
Notably, that sentiment lines up perfectly with his recent video address where he called much of the current political discourse and fighting "stupid" and about "issues" we won't remember in the near term future. And, he lamented the lack of discussion about issues that actually matter to the long term future of the country.
It appears we are watching in real time the awaking or refocusing of Tucker Carlson's worldview or priorities. Perhaps his "redemption." But all we are focused on is a poorly stated sentence.
ChatNYT
It’s not how white men fight.
That's Fox's best punch?
That's all they've got?
To quote Crash Davis, "You ain't getting that cheese by me, meat."
Megyn Kelly had a piece on her podcast about Fox's resident bully. While Tucker cannot fight back because he's still under contract, the bully is trying desperately to discredit him with his viewers. She is failing miserably. All she's doing is humanizing Tucker and making us like and support him even more. While some people might want to cut his replacements a break because they aren't the ones at fault, half of us have dumped Fox all together. Newsmax is dancing a jig as their ratings continue to climb. Megyn Kelly's podcasts are approaching a million followers. Antifa deserves to get some of what they dish out back. Do the white kids need bail money? Help with legal fees?
Typical of Althouse to believe, with no evidence, that the Times has reported this accurately.
I'm pretty sure Althouse did not express that belief today.
I'm not sure "fight" is the right word here. When several people gang up on one person, it's better described as an "assault" or an "attack." Sometimes the word "mob" can be added.
And there is definitely a certain stereotype that holds true about how one ethnic group behaves. Every commenter here can probably think of a dozen examples without even looking.
Similarly, the "knock out game" isn't really a fight either.
How is Fox News not setting themselves up for a new dominion type settlement? This leaking and attempted smearing of a canceled employee cannot be helpful to them in the coirtroom.
Ha ha, kidd8ng! If the courtroom is in NY it’s a winning strategy.
#ThereIsNoJustice
A vein in DIEversity (diversity is inequity, exclusion), Roe's regrets, Ginsburg's epiphany, and social progress despite.
Whites? Albinos? The social convention is that people resolve issues individually, not through Occcupation, Antifa mobs, SS BLM intimidation, blood libels, civil insurrections, or planned paradigms.
How does a black man fight?
Ask Chris Rock.
I don't think this was an introspection about the people involved in the altercation but more about how his own thinking and moral compass may have been impacted by events over the last couple of years.
He found himself shocked by his own "get him!" attitude when he first viewed the video. The thought that you find yourself wishing harm on someone else because of the group they belong to is when things start to go really wrong. It truely is the "othering" that both sides warn about mainly as an excuse for restricting the other sides actions.
That's the reason Tucker was relieved of his show?
So an un-authenticated text is now news.
Fox firing Tucker for recognizing the humanity in a person with whom he completely disagrees with is the perfect expression of our world, and particularly our media, at this time - acknowledging the enemy as anything other than non-human is anathma and shall be punished.
I'm waiting for more revelations that Tucker is a regular guy, with thoughts. I'm pretty sure that, after seeing Antifa gangs attack people on multiple videos, I would have savored the action too. I'm not sure I would have had the deep thoughts Tucker had, as right as they were. What his thoughts do reflect is the reality that the police, who are supposed to protect the citizenry from such thugs, are also there to protect the criminals from the people. Continued abrogation of the former will result in the end of the latter.
"It’s not how white men fight.
Earnest Prole (because of course it is): "Among the many evils of making Whiteness the Original Sin of the Wokeness Religion is that it provokes an equal and opposite reaction of dopey racist White Pride from people who should know better."
Amazingly dumb take, again.
Carlson is utterly correct. Those of us who came of age in the racial flashpoint bay area near Oakland knew that fighting as a crew of honkies and/or crackers against a single target was about as cowardly a thing as you could do. There would be immediate in-group repercussions.
However, given the number of mob vs onesies or twosies that were race-weighted in one specific direction, its clear that "rule" didn't apply across the board.
Interestingly, in the bay area the whites, latinos and asians hung together pretty tightly and there were plenty of great dudes amongst the bruthas who always did the right thing. But the general proclivities of certain groups were just that.
Even more interestingly, after my family relocated to San Diego later, it was the whites, asians and relatively fewer bruthas who all hung together pretty tightly (it helped if you played alot of sports) and there were plenty of great dudes amongst the latinos who always did the right thing. But the general proclivities of certain groups were just that.
It just goes to show how alike people really are and its just a matter of which demographic group is dominant in numbers and what the local social structure allows in terms of violence between groups that determines expected scenarios and outcomes.
Carlson also grew up in CA around that time (in a very nice area of San Diego) so he is precisely correct that white dudes, especially in that era and location, were most certainly taught to never fight in a mob action.
But prole is always gonna prole....and more and more he's prole-ing about in the LLR neighborhood....unexpectedly....(wink wink)
wow
NYT is trying to save Fox News
that is some desperate shit
Static Ping: "Ah, the predicted Fox News smear campaign continues.
Each reveal makes Tucker seem like a normal person trying to be decent and charming. I dunno. Maybe that's out of bounds at Fox News. There bubble must be really weird."
Completely correct.
But you can see how far that weird bubble has expanded out of the NY Fox Studios and right on into Althouse blog with all the usual suspects.
I understand Tucker's sentiments. Be careful not to become your enemy. That's hard.
But, he's a better man than me. I probably would have watched the ANTIFA kid getting his ass kicked a few times and enjoyed it.
ANTIFA needs a lot more ass kickings. I don't care who does it.
If the gov't allows ANTIFA to set fire to buildings when people are inside them inside them.... then they deserve to have their kick asses kicked when the opportunity presents itself.
I don't see the difference between ANTIFA's occupied building arson attempts and Timothy McVeigh except level of success and carnage. The intention is exactly the same.
This is how Antifa fights. So they were getting their own brand of Justice, which is the highest form of Justice.
Antifa is white so Tucker as using an idealized version of White Men. The platonic form. There are plenty of white men who do this, unfortunately. There are also a lot of white Ken who grew up without fathers
Fox doesn’t care about this statement. They haven’t fired Tucker. They are paying him. Why pay a Racist?
Unfortunately, Carlson is wrong about that. The whole point of being a gangster is to have a gang, and there are loads of white gangsters. The Hells Angels' motto is "One for all, and all on one".
Only the NYT's and the Murdoch's would come up with this weird crap. Are we supposed to believe:
1) This is something so awful, it took Fox News 2 fucking years to get upset about?
2) That its terrible to notice that "White Men" have a way of fighting they consider honorable?
3) That its terrible for Tucker to express sympathy for the Antifa goon even thought antifa had threatened his family and himself? OR that human feeling and decency has priority over politics?
What's even more crazy is that Fox News is leaking/smearing Tucker in the NYT's. No one in his audience likes the NYT's. The kind of people uspet at this 2 year old email, are the same people who cheered Tucker getting fired. And never would watch him, except as a Hate-watch.
Fox News and the Murdochs are on the same team as the NYT's. I hope this makes it more clear.
BTW, its not how CONSERVATIVE white men fight. Liberal/leftist fight 4-1 or 10-1. And they dream of Gulags and execution chambers.
Go read history.
Five minutes on twitter will validate Tucker's assertion
Maybe I’m especially dense today but I can’t see how that text would be a firing offense.
Typically what NYT readers believe after having those sharp piercing pains in their midbrain.
Megyn Kelly crapped all over this "reveal" today, saying there is only one place it could have come from--FNC Corporate Media Communications. Motive--to drive down Tucker's market value while he can't respond and to irritate him into making a mistake. Meanwhile, FNC's primetime viewership craters. Could the Murdochs have misread this one?
If the FNC settlement plan was to get the Dominion claims behind them, I'd say that worked, but their scorched-earth tactics with Tucker may end up costing them a lot more in viewership than they paid to Dominion. You can permanently alienate your audience. Who looks at Matt Drudge these days?
As to Tucker, he's got the biggest "genius grant" in history--perhaps $30 million over 18 months. All he has to do is stand ready to perform the duties agreed to in his contract. He can sit in his garden, think great thoughts, write a couple of books, be close with his family, cash his paychecks, and wait out the 2024 election. Tucker isn't going to change the 2024 election outcome in any case.
He can come roaring back in 2025.
What Yancey Ward said.
“Trying to picture Tucker Carlson in a fight. Presumably he adopted the bow tie to guard against his foe grabbing it”.
Tucker fishes and hunts. I bet he can kick your ass Readering. Of course that’s probably not too hard.
The Magic 8 Ball says 2024 is going to be a dirty election.
They're terrified of white men acting as a racial monolith again. Can't you tell yet? Everyday you're confronted with more evidence the establishment is absolutely terrified of white males acting as a group for their own best interests, just like every other fucking group in this country gets to.
White men acting together toward a common goal splits the atom, conquers empires against insurmountable odds, and lands on the moon. Maybe they're right. Maybe they should be.
Carlson makes no mention of any race other than white. Any comparison to another race is completely in the imagination of the reader.
Say, did Tucker mention anything about "black-run cities"?
is not normie/decent implied by TC [self-inclusive in term white-men]
Considering he was watching a video of "white men" fighting that way, it disproves his own statement. There are plenty of "white men" who are thugs. His suggestion that thugs are only of other races is the problem. If it's clearly untrue that "white men don't fight like that" what is the purpose of saying that other than to convey some message of racial superiority?
The left falsely accuses the right of racism all the time. This is not one of those times.
There are some many other ways he could have expressed his opinion instead of playing the race card:
-"Conservatives don't fight like that."
-"Christians don't fight like that."
-"Gentlemen don't fight like that."
-"Law and Order citizens don't fight like that."
-"Civilized people don't fight like that."
-"My parents taught me that men do not fight like that."
All of these things are more accurate that the clearly false statement that "white men don't fight like that."
I think Kelly and guest nailed it. Fox is "leaking" all this material to destroy Carlson and make it more difficult to take his audience with him. Fox is salting the earth. We should instead salt Fox.

Once you've decided to define people by their sex and skin color (see "DEI") it becomes a game that everyone gets to play.
So, EP, do share with us all the places you've attacked the DEI crowd, and "affirmative action", and all the rest of your side's racist bullshit.
Or else STFU about someone doing the same thing that you do
Although TC doesn't say anything derogatory about non-whites, it is a plausible implication that he thinks they fight unfairly (many vs one). It was a mistake to generalize this way. I'm surprised he would commit such a statement to writing. Having said that, I don't think TC is a racist.
On the issue of fair fighting, I would like to know the context of this fight. As a general matter, in my view, a street fight with an Antifa thug is not an occasion to fight fair. The more these pieces of shit get the crap knocked out of them, the less thug-like they'll be.
More bullshit Fox disclosures in battle space prep. If he had ever sexually harassed someone, we would have heard it by now.
Temp Blog: "Carlson makes no mention of any race other than white. Any comparison to another race is completely in the imagination of the reader."
You might need to repeat that for DD Driver and Prole et al.
Isn’t he telling the story of exposing his own unconscious bias and demonstrating how easy it is to allow violence and hatred become racism? Isn’t that what we all should be doing? I actually thought he was a lot more shallow than that. Boy was I wrong. Fox News is definitely scared of depth.
If he had ever sexually harassed someone, we would have heard it by now.
Decades later, without rhyme, or witness. A veritable witch hunt, less the abortive finale.

The fortuitous fortune cookie wishes you to live in interesting times.
Fox can do the trickle-drop of disparaging comments about Carlson, which predicted by some when this whole thing started. Still won’t win them back the viewers they lost. Ratings in the tank. And every time something like this comes out, their remaining viewers are going to see the mendacity of the Fox crew sans Carlson. He was really their only star. Now he is gone. Fox might manage One America News ratings quite soon.
RideSpaceMountain said..."They're terrified of white men acting as a racial monolith again. Can't you tell yet?"
I think you nailed it. Masked Antifa and Gang thugs have beaten up a lot of lone victims over the years, as we have all seen on video. So now their techniques are being used against them, and the media establishment doesn't like it.
Boo Hoo. The Progs chose to abandon the Marquis of Queensbury Rules years ago. So now it's Obama's Chicago Rules for everyone.
The Progs made this bed; now they get to ay down in it.
Wow, that must have been hard to find.
Any comparison to another race is completely in the imagination of the reader.
The modern method of inference, is the old product of prejudice, engenders Diversity (i.e. color judgment, class-based bigotry) Inequity, Exclusion (DIE), among other disordered ideologies.

You don't have to be a Trump guy to despise Leftist nazi antifa arsonists.
&
After watching the corrupt white left Nazi Antifas throw concrete milkshakes at people like Andy Ngo - Injuring him, and others - (& how the corrupt leftists and media a-holes laughed) I wanted each and every one of those thug nazi leftists arsonists arrested and jailed. As should happen in a nation with blind justice. but no. So - some ass-kicking? Yeah - I'll look the other way while a nazi antifa gets his ass kicked.
But we live in a nation of corruption and leftist thought crime.
That's a really long text
That text-- if that's what it was, a text-- would take me about half an hour or more to type, ha, and get sent from my mobile to the recipient's in about a score or more of text messages. I almost read the NYT article to see if it clarified whether it was a text or an email.
Have been trying to remember if I've ever actually heard someone say (without any irony etc) 'that's very white of you' or some similar phrase; don't believe so.
You would think Fox would have learned from the Twitter Files that dripping information does little to convince those skeptical of your argument.
Yet in their attempt to bury Tucker, they fall in the same Twitter Files sanctimonious slow grievance airing pattern and only convince those already on their side.
Good sportsmanship, personal honor based on fighting fair, Marquess of Queensbury Rules are all Western European ideas.
While most white men aren’t educated in the higher points of upper class English boxing etiquette most white men don’t gang up on one individual and beat them half to death, or murder them. It is considered pathetic and barbaric even in most trailer parks. It is normal in black neighborhoods. It just is. If you have never lived in a black neighborhood than you don’t know what you are talking about. All the white people in Wisconsin or upper class circles of DC clutching their pearls just show how incredibly privileged their lives have been to never know the fear of being jumped by a gang of criminal minded blacks. Male or female, both sexes do it regularly. It is one of the reasons nice black kids in the hood join gangs. To get some protection from the savages.
DD, you wouldn't know racism if it bit you in the ass.
The left falsely accuses the right of racism all the time. This is not one of those times.

Pitiful but about par for your contributions, such as they are.
Mark Twain said "All sane white people hate noise".
Racist?
It’s all about his naivety. White men beating on another white man is completely out of his experiential wheelhouse another time and another place (prep school no doubt).
"It's not how white men fight."
Well...perhaps that's not entirely self-serving or inaccurate. After all, lynchings can't really be called "fights."
Show me the myriad of videos of a group of white people beating up a black person.
I'll wait.
Tucker said the quiet part out loud.
Dumb Lefty Mark: "Yet in their attempt to bury Tucker, they fall in the same Twitter Files sanctimonious slow grievance airing pattern and only convince those already on their side."
LOL
The Twitter Files released documented conclusively how thoroughly govt across many agencies has established direct censorship power over social media companies content and what ideas are suppressed and amplified.
But since that censorship regime was exposed as aligned with the democraticals Dumb Lefties like Mark have to pretend it never happened in the same way they still pretend russia collusion happened and Putin installed Trump and the hoax dossier was "mostly proven correct" and Hunters laptop is STILL just russian disinformation etc etc etc.
This is why Dumb Lefty Mark shows up with Twitter Doom and Gloom predictions even as Twitter makes remarkable progress across all facets of its operations and is increasing ebgagement and impact...which is also demonstrably proven by the sheer desperation of the lefties to destroy it...even as they cannot bring themselves to quit it!
Legal question (IANAL):
Tucker is reportedly still under contract to Fox; they continue to pay his presumably large salary and get nothing but adjustments to their reputation in return.
If Tucker signs that reported 100 million dollar contract offered to him, does Fox have any recourse other than to just stop paying his salary? That seems like a win-win, at least in the short run. I suppose they could get some sort of restraining order keeping him off the air, but then they would be on the hook for his salary???

Tucker was doing the: "That's not who we are" and "We can't lower ourselves to their level"
And still gets slammed by the Left and their conservative toadies for it.
Never Cuck. Never apologize.
Never assume the Left will respond to kindness or "reaching accross the aisle".
What a thoughtful, honest-sounding, introspective comment from Tucker musing on his own failure of EMPATHY and desire to be better!
Isn't EMPATHY a long running theme on this blog? Weird that the bold portion, and seeming focus of Prof Althouse's post, is the single portion that the Media has focused on to make the story about Tucker's supposed racism/white supremacist beliefs.

Yup and one reason black kids join gangs is protection. Several of my nieces and nephews attend black majority schools in Chicago. They are bullied at a minimum and one says he sees more than 20 fights a day at school. Even Catholic schools there now cost over $20,000 a year.
