Talked myself into buying the blue check.

I'm not a big Twitter person but I am curious to see how this blue check situation will work out. I suspect that some people will buy blue checks and get in trouble for pretending to be famous people. Remember how Kathy Griffin got in trouble for pretending to be Musk? I also think that most famous people who can afford it will get the blue checks. And, of course, there will be the famous people who will never buy one. (Just to make a point.)

Plus, I read that businesses will have to pay $1000 a month to get gold checks to verify what they are. That's going to be some serious money for Twitter.

Good for you. I think its the best move.

hanuman_prodigious_leaper કહ્યું...

show me on tweet where MuskMan bluechek you!

Maynard કહ્યું...

I have yet to talk myself into using Twitter.

Are there good reasons to use it, aside from supporting Elon?

dbp કહ્યું...

Hopefully, this means that you'll tweet more.

Judge not by the color of my label, but by the content of my postings. The second hardest job.

Good for you professor. You're voice, blog, and writing are significant.

Zavier Onasses કહ્યું...

Hurrah! Hurrah! And your tweet has already garnered four hearts.

Leland કહ્યું...

6 likes and only one reply. I think that is called a good ratio.

I'm thinking that $8/month is an affordable sacrifice for whatever you feel you are receiving in return. This has nothing to do with the marketplace of ideas. It's simply the marketplace of services.

Jupiter કહ્યું...

Interesting point. Your blue check assures the reader that you are, in fact, you (But is that a legal presumption?). Presumably, this imposes a degree of circumspection on you. There are things you might say anonymously that you would not say with your blue check next to your name.

Q - To what extent does the popularity of your blog rest upon the fact that you have had, from day one, a figurative blue check? Would we still be here if the blog were written by "Former Law Professor Ann Onymous"?

madAsHell કહ્યું...

Gee, it seems like it was just yesterday when you said something like "Twitter doesn't generate any new commenters".

Big Mike કહ્યું...

I'm thinking the new approach will be more democratic, more marketplace-of-ideas, more about the actual writing in particular posts than the status of the speaker

And if it doesn’t, you can always stop paying and let your check mark expire.

farmgirl કહ્યું...

I don’t do social media- no Fcbk, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram etc.
I do find the info that’s shared here(in what is my social media- &may be an exception to my rule)fascinating.

Thx.

"How about some sort of system where users vote for the people they think are most authoritative."

That sounds like the worst idea.

MayBee કહ્યું...

I saw a very outspoken woman, a small business owner and a minority, post a meme yesterday saying "Don't let anyone shame you out of buying a blue check". SHe's had imitators and scammers, and she was never getting a blue check under the old system.
So I think this is very good for some people, and I like the meme she posted.

Kathryn51 કહ્યું...

Okay, I'm No. 14 "heart like" on your post, but when does the blue check show up. I'll follow you when it appears. [I followed you years ago, but since you rarely posted I dropped you when I reduced my list].

Rollo કહ્યું...

I won't say what your Twitter handle looked like to me, but I was reminded of Tobias Fünke, who was both an analyst and a therapist and so reserved the vanity plate "ANALRAPIST".

Eight bucks? The flea market of ideas.

rastajenk કહ્યું...

If you become a big twitter sensation, all I can say is, I knew ya when.....

GRW3 કહ્યું...

I can understand why the people that paid thousands of dollars in bribes to become blue checks in the old system are mad.

Dude1394 કહ્યું...

Glad to see it, I immediately followed you.

Plus, you can do it while you're camping!

I joined Twitter – after holding aloof for many years – in November, after Musk's purchase. So far I've put up few original postings, but do retweet occasionally, while commenting fairly often. A couple weeks back, I purchased the blue check at $7/mo. ($84 taken annually). In addition to theoretically supporting the new policy's obvious anti-bot utility (not to speak of a paid membership making one the customer to be served, rather than target to be exploited), I mainly appreciate the ability to edit posts together with the blue check's 4K (rather than 280 character) posting limit (note the Blogger here at Althouse allows 8K). While I haven't posted much at Twitter thus far, not having to break the occasional more lengthy texts into many 280-byte chucks is a blessing.

Lem Vibe Bandit કહ્યું...

Oh my, as Zulu would say.

Now I'm thinking I'm going to do this also. It's in line with the long line of people over the years I've supported because they were unfairly attacked.

Mark કહ્યું...

Congratulations for paying Modi's lapdog to censor Twitter in India.

rwnutjob કહ્યું...

Not the reaction legacy blues were expecting. How'd I not know you were on Twitter?

If you earn money from the blog, you can write that Twitter fee, and also your subscription to the NYT and anything else that contributes to you blogging as a business expense, including heating the room you blog in, computer purchases and repairs, and so on.

Aggie કહ્યું...

I'm still not seeing the supporting logic though. Celebrities and public institutions are egomaniacs, obsessed with their visibility, usually eager to preen. How could they stand it? What will happen when 2 dozen LeBron's sign up and put his picture as their avatar and commence to talk sh*t>? It won't matter whether they've got a Blue Check or not - they'll be a constantly-irritating 'Search' result.

I predict that, after a respectably-humbling interval, the payments will commence as the celeb's reclaim and re-hallow their ground.

NMObjectivist કહ્યું...

Paying for a blue check at Twitter is a good way to support Twitter financially. Major advertisers have blacklisted it and Elon needs the money. He's in the war for the first amendment.

Iman કહ્યું...

Don’t mind the turd burglars (e.g., Mark), it’s a good move.
