What is uber cool in Madison? a big house with a pool on Mendota with a big sail boat, a dock of course. Or An FLW Usonian house near campus, like the immortal Bard Prof. Dr. Rudin, the Lord King of Math Analysis.

I once had 3000 sf of rustic house with 100 ft of beach on lake huron in eastern MI, with a Rhoads Bantam. Sometimes I wish I had stayed, or gone to Petoskey. Regrets are like coppers in the fountain. I have enough beauty in my brilliant lovely wife, and enough in gold. I can recall the scenery.

(I miss TikTok.) When I commented on the pepper and mice post, I was reminded of a TikTok video by a young woman. She had filmed herself hiking a narrow trail which led to spectacular views on a clifftop. She was astonished that the government let people walk the trail. Because if you stepped over the edge obviously you would die and the government still let you go up the trail. In fact she thought the government was kind of negligent in not shutting it down. She really didn’t understand the nature of nature.

so, i'm just curious what the Wisconsin Supreme Court will use, for their reasoning that abortion is a constitutional right?
Will they just say: It IS.. because we SAY SO ??
or will they say: It IS... because we Want it to be?

Any predictions?

Wisconsin Supreme Court election being called, unsurprisingly, for Janet Protasiewicz.

Politico characterizing the win over Kelly as his being "crushed." Looking forward to the numbers tomorrow.

"When will the Supreme Court election results be known?"

When they yield the desired result, like the Nashville Tranifesto, or 21 years after the death of the last grandspawn of Charles, third of the name (whichever comes first).

Dan Kelly is getting wiped out by the lefty activist with the bad haircut who doesn't know the proper role of a judge. Wimmin maintain their 6-1 grip on the WIS Sup Ct. Shoulda picked Jennifer Doroow to take on the lefty woman. Kelly was too far right, and too Catholic. Bo-shun done him in. In fairness, Dorow should have lost too, just not as bad. I hope he figures out that he's just too scary to women who vote.
Dont expect to read many stories about how Janet's backers outspent Kelly by 7-1, that outside money played any role, or about how money in politics is bad. It will be all about abortion, all day long.
In fact, look for Janet to declare abortions legal up to 39.99 weeks, and you get paid to have yours if you choose the new state employee-union member facilities that are carved into new D-friendly gerrymandered abortion districts, each of which adds a vote to the state senate and two to the assembly, per Janet's decree.
She is the judge that we deserve.
I notice the daughter of a mill worker, which was her first stated qualification, also wiped out the incumbent court of appeals judge. Clown show all around, yet we're expected to ignore the clown shoes on the judges and the circus used to select them.

Soon, when it's a landslide.

Kelly being Trump's man for the RNC election investigation did not go unnoticed as he hoped.

Seems like trying to throw people's vote out only gets more people to come out to defeat you. For a second time I would note.

Yet, statewide conservative referenda supported.

On June 17, 1986, I attended the RIAS 2 Festival at the Waldbühne amphitheater in West Berlin to see The Bangles in concert. Yesterday, I found the audio from that concert on YouTube, and it took me back to those days! You can tag along with me on this nostalgic journey. The mic levels for Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson were higher than the others, meaning that their background vocals drowned out Michael Steele when she sang lead, but other than that, this sounds pretty good. Enjoy! (46 minute set)

The Bangles live @ RIAS 2 Festival in Waldbühne, Berlin, Germany 06/17/1986 (Audio)

June 17 was a local holiday in those days, the Day of German Unity, commemorating the East Berlin uprising in 1953.

Clyde said...

I will add that Feargal Sharkey, the band that came on before The Bangles at the concert, were extremely loud, and the mics and amps were still at the same levels when The Bangles came on, causing them to say "We're the Bangles." "...And we're deaf!" It made me smile to hear that line again after 37 years because I remember it from that day!

When we try to evaluate whether a criminal complaint is valid or fraudulent, we ought to consider the problem of publicity, and the risk/reward ratio.

Consider the Brett Kavanaugh allegations. I had strong suspicions that Kavanaugh was innocent and this was a frame job. Chief among my suspicions was

1) the timing of the claim

If a man sexually assaults you, and you wait until he is nominated for the United States Supreme Court to bitch about it, the odds are high you are a liar. Why are you a liar? Because genuine sexual assault victims bring the claim around the time they are hurt. Fraudulent liars wait and wait and wait and wait and then bring the claim around the time it will hurt the man.

2) Ruth Ginsburg was furious about the false claim against Kavanaugh. It was a little old lady furious, but she was quietly outraged and slapped a bunch of feminist bitches down. Three cheers for her.

3) Nobody was charged with false claims and there was no criminal punishment for the false claims against Kavanaugh. So the risk/reward is ridiculous. Risk? Bad publicity and people don't like you. Reward? You affect the United States government at the highest levels and have insane power over the rest of our country.

4) After the "me too" feminist movement took down Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein, no surprise in seeing multiple fraudulent attacks on Kavanaugh. A second woman alleged he had raped her, and a third. Might have been more than that. Each one became more and more outlandish. And we hadn't heard a whisper about this before the hearing. The timing was bad. It appeared bad. Kavanaugh was confirmed, despite the numerous false claims of sexual assault (or sketchy behavior, the stories shifted).

5) But perhaps the most damning indication of fraud was the trial-by-media. Women went to the media to allege Kavanaugh had assaulted them. They did not go to the cops. Genuine rape victims go to the cops. Fraudulent rape victims skip the cops, and go right to the press conference. The media, which is one-sided and has no sense of due process or fair hearing, convicts the man and says shit like "believe all women."

6) These fraudulent claims hurt innocent victims. For instance, the "me too" movement pretty much fell apart (I think) after the fraudulent attempt to pile on against Kavanaugh

7) While I don't think any of the women were prosecuted for fraud -- and if that's true, it's fucking disgraceful -- one of the attorneys involved, Michael Avenatti, was slapped the fuck down and is now in prison for fraud. That was done to scare the shit out of plaintiff attorneys and keep the shark attacks to a minimum.

I used to get so mad at Althouse for telling me I couldn't wear shorts

in the motherfucking South!

it took me a few years (for a fast-thinker I'm a little slow sometimes) to understand she was yanking our chain with that "men in shorts" stuff

Althouse thinks it's cool for men to wear dresses, so she's just joshing on the damn shorts

For a year or three I was like "she's ranting about shorts again" and I'm reading it, in the South, wearing my damn shorts

"bitch is saying I'm a boy not a man!"

grrrrrrrrr

Years it took me to figure out she was yanking our chain

(by "our" chain -- now I'm explaining my fucking pronouns -- I mean men, okay, she's using feminist humor on men)

nobody warns you about feminist humor

y'all men out there, look out for the damn feminists teasing us with jokes and shit

Althouse likes Buster Keaton because she's got a stone face

out there in Madison

If she was a professional wrestler, they'd call her Stone Face Althouse

Me they would call Baby Man Carmichael

crying in the ring like Ric Flair

Woooo!

or Donald Trump, also a professional wrestler

Saint Croix said...

It's weird because we've got so many words in the English language

Althouse wants to kick some words out

or limit them

I'm blanking on the damn words she hates

gimme a second and it will come to me

it's like a guy's name

oh it's driving me crazy

can't say whathisname name, unless you're talking about the guy named whathisname

fuck!

can't remember

Garner! She fucking hates Garner

unless it's James Garner

she's ripping pages out of dictionaries like Nero Wolfe

anyway, I got a word we need to add to the English language

you know that medical word, "paranoia"?

like, "paranoid schizophrenic"?

that's a serious fucking mental disorder (I think) that needs serious medical care

I guess

did not go to medical school

and our doctors are way the fuck overboard on how to treat the human race

they don't know what a baby is, for instance, and now they don't know what a woman is

and they're trying to change men into women

by which they mean, give steroids (estrogen is a sex steroid, I think) to men

or cut off their balls

I've just been focusing on the children -- who are not old enough to consent to this shit -- we lawyers (or ex-lawyers) notice shit like this, and we sue the fuck out of you for money. Docs! Are you listening! We sue the fuck out of you for money!

I know that Harry Blackmun and the Supremes threw out the fucking Hippocratic Oath in 1973. (Read Roe v. Wade if you don't believe me).

Anyway, that little fucking part of the opinion fucked up our society in many ways, not just baby-killing ways

(Hippocratic Oath forbids abortion, and assisted suicide)

So they tossed that fucking Oath out, while saying nice things about Hippocrates

(Hippocrates was a know-nothing doctor and the only reason we mention his ass, dummies, is because of his Oath and his philosophy of medicine -- so your willingness to throw it out, Supreme Court, still pisses me off. And the medical schools obey the unelected dictators in our society).

Doctors rewrote the fucking Oath, or just quit teaching it in medical school.

You doctors yell at me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, my original point is that we need a new word

a not so serious word

for the "good paranoia" that keeps you out of trouble

the Andy Grove paranoia, so to speak

and not the paranoid schizophrenia dangerous to yourself and other people paranoia

I think we need a new word

you rappers out there help me out

new word, please!

expand the English language and make our dictionaries a little bigger!

thank you

(I know it's brutal on the non-English speakers trying to learn how to speak our language -- sorry amigo)

@Eva Marie " She really didn’t understand the nature of nature."

That's the current smartphone and social media crisis in a nutshell. People often have little awareness of cause and effect, unintended consequences, and trade-offs.

- Some of her peers walk backwards off cliffs trying to get the perfect selfie for Instagram.
- People decry fossil fuels not understanding that their lifestyles follow from outsourcing manufacturing to China to pretend that Western countries are "making environmental progress" -- nope, just shifting pollution from more regulated to less regulated countries.
- "Investors" think Bitcoin has value because it requires a lot of computing power to create rather than any tangible or physical value. One Bitcoin plus $4 will get you a cup of coffee.
- Young girls plug into social media selfie contests 24/7 and then suffer from anxiety and depression when they are not in the top 0.1% most attractive females on the planet. Then, out of fear and bitterness they become screechy, scolding nuns in a virtual convent.
- Boys play video games and think they can / should / are expected to perform as superheroes in competition despite being weak couch potatoes. They pay $$$ to win, never learning how to actually compete nor do they learn how to accept defeat and adapt.
- The children and grandchildren of the sex and drugs and rock and roll generation attempted to invent morality from nothing and came up with asinine absolutist cancellation rules.

Technology has made life too easy versus functional real-world processes. The Amish and Mennonites feared this 150 years ago and dropped out of the Industrial Revolution. With computers and smart phones the skills gap became huge, and Mother Nature takes no prisoners. She doesn't care what you want, only that your follow her life rules.
