"Even after it was evident that this painful, potentially disfiguring or even fatal infection was spreading through gay men’s sexual networks..."

"... public health officials and the media were hesitant to give the same advice they had given freely at the beginning of the Covid pandemic: Limit your number of sex partners and express your sexuality in socially distanced ways. But while health officials and journalists hesitated, gay and bi men sprang into action. Young men with lesions covering their faces took to social and mainstream media, telling the public... And the gay community listened.... So while an early and frankly honest public health response could have blunted the outbreak, resulting in far fewer cases and far less suffering, the swift collective action of gay and bi men prevented catastrophe.... When it comes to emerging health threats — even ones that can spread sexually — gay men can handle the truth. You can give it to them straight."

From "How Gay Men Saved Us From Mpox" by Ina Park and Dan Savage (NYT).

The monkeypox emergency lasted less than 9 months and was declared over in January. The article notes that : "When the first cases were reported among gay and bi men in the West, health authorities and the media couldn’t bring themselves to say the word 'gay.' To avoid stigmatizing gay and bi men, early reports buried the lead."

I remember the days of "heterosexual AIDS." Desperate to hide the truth.

Such heroes! Now try HIV today and get the same result. PreP has made people fearless resulting in multiple Other STD type infections, but you don’t here anything about that.

More like Mpox was visible and it was - no thanks dude rather than the noble struggle this tries to portray.

Or perhaps anal sex with numerous partners isn’t healthy. Not sure any gay man saved me from anything because I’m married to a woman

Last thing I heard, Sullivan was still headed to Provincetown for Bear Week, last summer?...then radio silence.

I thought it very irresponsible to go through with it and I can't be the only one. But they didn't want to be told.

Maybe radio silence worked.

So, they are saying that the gay and bi community were in fact far more sensible and less idiotic than the public health officials assumed that they would be? I'll believe that. Kudos to the gay and bi community. Apparently something was learned from AIDs.

And another strike against our moronic, cowardly, extremely politicized public health officials. Who are more than happy to lock down and mask the normies indefinitely, but always will to grant an exemption for a Burn Loot and Murder Riot in honor of George Floyd, or a gay orgy.

So there really WAS a don't say gay law.

Jesus, doesn't the NYT have editors?

They tried to convince the hetero population that AIDS wasn’t a disease the hit mainly gay men. I wonder how many gay men died as a result.

WTH - all any of us require is the truth. We can all handle it. Up down left right - share the truth. No whitewash no disclaimers no apologies. Quit the goddamned propaganda. We see it, quit lying!

Just a friendly public service reminder that both children and dogs were documented to have been infected with monkeypox last year at the height of the scare.

Thank you. That is all.

Now do AIDs.

"How Gay Men Saved Us From Mpox"

Us? Were non-gays ever at any risk?

"health authorities and the media couldn’t bring themselves to say the word 'gay.'"

Cuz they are not really "health" authorities.

"To avoid stigmatizing gay and bi men, early reports buried the lead."

Better to raise general fear than to "stigmatize" people actually doing things to spread a serious disease.

Compare and contrast: treatment of Covid anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers vs. gays spreading monkeypox.

Hasn't gay sex been a prime risk factor in disease transmission for decades now?

let me see, if i've got this 'straight'?
They're saying, that having unprotected anal intercourse, with many many (MANY!) people might result in you be exposed to those other people's diseases? Can that be right?
</sarc

When the monekypox panicdemic was first starting, my 90 year old mother expressed concern about catching it..
I asked her, if she'd been having a LOT of unprotected anal intercourse with infected people?
She exclaimed; "NO! of course not!!!"
I told her, that she didn't need to worry then.
And she told me: "that's NOT what they said on NPR!!!!"

Moms, can't live with them... Can't be born without them

To this very day, the radical gays/left/dems/LLR-dems STILL blame Ronald Reagan for AIDS and those that died from it.

Just as they have laid global COVID deaths at Trump's feet.

I playbook with 1 play, every single time.

Must not have jacked up the amplification once the demographic correlation was seen.

What a ridiculous assertion. They didn't save heterosexual people from monkeypox- they saved themselves.

The deliberate simultaneous messages of Monkey Pox DOOM and the downplaying of the fact that the disease was 99.999% likely to only infect sexually active gay men resulted in one of my oldest friend's dream vacation being cancelled.

My friend is a life-long Anglophile and has wanted to see England since she was a child. Finally, a well-off friend of hers arranged for them to vacation there last summer; my friend can't afford any such thing on her own. Then suddenly everyone was talking about Monkey Pox and since these two women are in their sixties and not in great health, they were scared into cancelling their travel plans. I gently tried to encourage her to go anyway, having read about the actual miniscule risks involved, but she thought the Pox would be all over the surfaces in Europe and in airports. I was furious at The Authoritays....there was no reason to be hyping the danger of this particular nasty disease except that it conveniently stepped in to replace the fear of Covid to keep the population terrorized.

I'm so very sad for my friend and doubt that she will ever visit Penny Lane.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, they sacrificed lives in Planned Parent/hood

During the AIDS transdemic, they sacrificed lives for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

During ethnic Spring, they sacrificed, sacrifice diverse people... persons of no consequence in progress.

During the human rites campaigns, they sacrifice babies for social, redistributive, clinical, political, criminal, fair weather progress, and "burden" relief.

Meanwhile, general STD incidence has increased. “Safe sex practices” have gone by the board. Being a virus, HIV may ultimately find a workaround for current retroviral therapies. The timeworn adage “an ounce of prevention” is dismissed, with a foreseeable outcome.

“Gay sexual networks”. Lol.They don’t see how gross that is. They don’t see that mpox, like AIDS, was only here because of gay men and their “sexual networks”. Gay men are disgusting. I used to not care. I used to not think about their proclivities but they have FORCED me to. Now I can no longer separate individual gay men from their sexuality. I despise them all. To be fair I also despise straight people who sleep around or “swing”. It’s just that I have never met a gay man who was monogamous. Ever. So all of them are guilty of what only some straights are.

Gk1 said...

They can't even spell out monkeypox for crying out loud. Funnier still how it had to be dragged out of them that it spread primarily through gay, anal, sex. They wanted to pretend just anyone could get it and we were all at risk. The CDC and WHO were trying to have us all mask all over it too. Completely worthless, the entire lot of them.

the affluent white gay community spread the knowledge among each other.
But there was little outreach to minority communities, where due to the stigma, men who identify as cisgender men but also have sex with other men die not know what was going on. This shows lack of outreach to the minority community is because of the higher death rate in these communities.

Gay STDs will soon be a thing of the past. The transgender fascists will see to that as they convince feminine boys to transition to girls. The transgender mafia are waging a war on gays and lesbians, not to mention girls and women.

It seems fair to label this as censorship, misinformation, lies of omission and more.

Apply the same skepticism on gun laws, climate change, social welfare programs, rising crime, success in schools... and more.

There are none so blind as those who obey orders to not look.

Bullshit: these men got paid big by the very nonprofits we shower with cash, the same ones we have supported without fail for similarly misrepresented "AIDS Educating" boondoggles that for decades have had zero effect against their other messaging that nobody may criticize anonymous gay hookups, while said organizations are richly funded by two sources: drug companies and the feds.

While other people who did nothing fun fun fun to become chronically ill and die get pennies and scant social services, these healthy, wealthy, connected gay activists play the system, forcing taxpayers to pony up 9K monthly merely for PReP, a much misused drug fully funded by us so they can keep barebacking strangers, usually younger ones.

Meanwhile, people with less lobbied, horrific diseases that would make monkey pox look like a walk in the park, plus the aged poor, live lives of desperation, pain, neglect and death so that homosexuals can keep barebacking strangers. Some public health miracle. Do your homework once in a while. Your ignorance of how public health dollars are allotted is staggering.

I know most fat and prosperous male nonprofit leaders and AIDS professionals in my city. Several caught AIDS AFTER decades of "educating others" and after the entirely publicly funded medical interventions became really effective; most got back on meth as they got paid big bucks to launch anti-meth campaigns. None stopped engaging in risky behaviors: for them, and them alone, we have built spa-like public medical centers where they don't have to rub shoulders with the less desirable sick and poor.

When AIDS came out, it was unknown if it could be spread by casual contact. Restaurant workers are known to spread hepatitis in poor countries and TB spread is an issue--but we were not allowed to even ask about AIDS in such workers. To protect feels. Better dead than rude.

Just to recap, the same “public health authorities” who required my children to wear masks in order to attend school for almost 2 years, notwithstanding respiratory problems and a speech impediment, were too woke and cowardly to tell the gays to knock off the rando orgies for a couple of weeks.

And yet it is supposedly a mystery why nobody trusts these incompetent arseholes?

The groups whose abnormal practices cause the quick spread of a disease moderate those practices and thereby slow or stop the spread of the disease within their community...and the angle here is that we should thank them and view their actions as heroic?
