"Andy Dick, Anchor-Head McGillicuddy, and Shakespeare"/"Beatnik Three Stooges"/"They are all Bob Dylan"....
Answers to a question I'd never — in all these years — thought of asking: "Who are the three men on the 'Planet Waves' album cover?"

The vice president would say it’s something to do with the passage of time… in her inimitable way 🫣
Naw, I'll give it to you straight. We see two versions of Dylan standing on the pavement, the fresh faced folk singer in the early 60's and an older, wizened Dylan with his pencil mustache. To the right is Shakespeare standing in alley wondering who this upstart is.
I still really enjoy this album - very underrated- IMO
"Somethin’ there is about you that I can’t quite put my finger on"
Have always had a soft spot for that album, or at least its song Dirge, which hit me harder than any song ever had before or since at a time I was suffering exactly what the opening stanza described:
I hate myself for lovin' you and the weakness that it showed
You were just a painted face on a trip down Suicide Road
The stage was set, the lights went out all around the old hotel
I hate myself for lovin' you and I'm glad the curtain fell.
There are those who worship loneliness, I'm not one of them
In this age of fiberglass I'm searching for a gem
The crystal ball upon the wall hasn't shown me nothing yet
I've paid the price of solitude but at least I'm out of debt.
Shakespeare is pretty obvious. I have no clue about the other two.

"Have you heard the news?" he said with a grin
"The Vice President's gone mad"
"Where?" "Downtown" "When?" "Last night"
"Hmm, say, that's too bad"
"Well, there's nothing we can do about it," said the neighbor
"It's just something we're gonna have to forget"
"Yes, I guess so," said Ma
Then she asked me if the clothes was still wet
The first one could be Virginia Woolf.
I’m going to say Woolf, J.D. Salinger, and Shakespeare.
On the theory that the image was intended to depict performers on the album, Bob Dylan, Richard Manuel, and Levon Helm.
Left one looks like Agatha Christie (I know it’s not her) and definitely looks like Virginia Woolf. Could the middle figure be Rimbaud? There’s a painting of him that is similar to the middle figure. Plus the anchor. And on the right that definitely looks like Shakespeare - although I don’t know exactly why. Woolf (suicide by drowning) Rimbaud (The Drunken Boat) Shakespeare (The Tempest) That would complete the water theme - or is that too much?
