Oh, Jordan, is that really your go-to humor?

I fail to see a problem.

However, I would have gone with: "I'm not a biologist."

Poor Ann.

Your beautiful people are a laughing stock.

There is an ambiguity in the phrase "it feels like a woman". It may not be a studied ambiguity in this case. But it is notoriously hard to determine what a woman is. And a good one is hard to find.

Dave Begley said...

Peterson got into it on Twitter with NE State Senator Megan Hunt. He called he a narcissist for shutting down the NE Legislature because she lost a vote,

Megan said she was the normal one. Cognitive dissonance.

You know we are fighting on your behalf right Ann?

Do you really support replacing women with men to get all the benefits and carve outs set aside for you?

Women’s prison not going to be so nice when half the people in it have functioning male anatomy is just one example. Bike races are another.

You might not care. But I have daughters. I will not let you turn the country into a joke on every level so you can get a pat on the head and ruin their opportunities in school and sports.

Seems appropriate to me, after all, the rule on the left is to ridicule your opponents, and transgenderism is definitely a shibboleth of the left. That insanity needs to be opposed in every way.

Humor is about surprising people into being amused. If it has to strike just the right tone, or make the correct political move, it isn't really humor. It's SNL.

Such brilliance from a right wing 'thought leader'.

I think you are understanding Althouse a little too swiftly. As perhaps she is understanding Peterson a little too swiftly.

You guys put a woman on the Supreme Court who claims not to know what a woman is.

Spiros said...

Mr. Peterson is struggling with the irony and difficulty in trying to define "woman" without reference to biology. It is not unlike Justice Stewart's definition of obscenity -- "I know it when I see it."

Well said. Although he isn’t right wing. He’s left wing - currently out of favor with the cool kids.
But your heart’s in the right place.

People that can pass an 8th grade biology exam and have been following the transgender "discourse", readily get Peterson's joke - and think it is funny.

People that think an adult human with XY chromosomes, a penis, functioning testes, and normal testosterone levels becomes a biological woman by uttering the four magic words, "I am a woman.", don't get the joke. Further, they refuse to get the joke.

People that think the adult human I described above, with a previous rape conviction, should be placed in a women's prison are just evil.

I consider being branded a "transphobe" by such evil people as a badge of honor!

Humor / satire is the best weapon. See Alinskys rule number 5:

"Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It's hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage."

Yes, the phrasing is unfortunate. I would have gone with, “I don't know what it is but if it identifies as a woman then it's a woman.”

Dude1394 said...

Seeing as how the most recent supreme court judge could not/would not/was not allowed to define what a woman was, this seems pretty spot on.

My wife was just reading about hip/gluteus issues that plague the sexes. Some renowned medical institution actually typed "people assigned as a woman at birth" to describe who had more issues with this problem.

That intelligent women would allow this type of crapola to be promoted is a deep, deep sign of cowardice.

Peterson is too earnest for true wit, so mild sarcasm will have to serve.

Will Cate said...

Hmmm... that's certainly a broader definition than I would have expected from JBP.

JAORE said...

How DAAAAAARE he! Joking is NOT allowed!

Much, much worse than the above identified "adult human ... with a previous rape conviction, ... placed in a women's prison".

Until the world gets hit by the clue bat enough to recognize the imbalance in outrage of those two positions, I'd say, "yawn".

farmgirl said...

I think it’s a woodchuck that didn’t duck when it saw the lawnmower coming.
But, if it identifies as a woman- then that statement will make no sense.

Kate said...

Ah, thank you, @Smilin Jack. Peterson bungled the joke.

Some of the twitter responses were really funny.

Will: "See Alinskys rule number 5"

One thing to deploy Alinsky's rules against Radicals, but quoting Alinsky as it's done is rubbing salt in the wound. Possibly a human rights violation.

Even a blind mole rat would know what a woman is because you can feel the difference? However women don't want to even imagine a blind mole rat trying to determine -- ugh. So not a joke. Maybe only a joke for men and not a joke for the internet but a joke appearing on the internet due to March Madness - cabin fever - call it what you will. It's time for flowers and cherry blossoms but we're getting snow, floods and/or tornadoes.
I shall return - to my Prairie Moon seed and plant catalog. Shall I plant three columbines? Do I dare a trumpet vine?

wildswan said...

And PS it's a Russian blind mole. No wonder the Russians attack other countries and don't want to stay peacefully in their own houses with pink paint scaling off and the blind mole rustling about below.

"...it feels like it's a woman."

Just to show what a weather vane our cultural expectations have become: The Chevrolet Colorado Truck commercial: Man, I feel like a Woman.

Enter GLADD. Yet, was GLADD at the time out of step by ascribing "homophobia" to the ad rather than even entertaining the possibility that the guy in the back seat really felt like a woman?

The ad got mixed reviews from Advertising Age critic Bob Garfield, who called it "kinda cute and kinda homophobic."

This commercial could have been just as funny if it had stuck to the "bad singer" joke, something one of the men in the back seat clearly displays on his pained face. Instead, the ad emphasizes for humor more the homophobic fears the men have (moving a leg away and uncomfortable looks) based simply on the words of the song he sings all too enthusiastically.

The company thought better of the commercial and later modified the narration to remove the reference to being "uncomfortable."

This commercial was selected for the Clean-Up-Your-Act Award at the Commercial Closet 2005 IMAGES IN ADVERTISING AWARDS. In response, Brenda Rios, Manager of Diversity Communications for General Motors, provided this statement, "Chevrolet makes a broad range of products that appeal to an extensive, diverse customer base, from Aveo and Cobalt small cars to SUVs and full-size trucks. Our advertising is intended to capture the imagination of potential customers in a fun, engaging manner. It is never our intention of offend any customer demographic. This particular ad was developed more than a year ago and is no longer airing. As GM explores opportunities to market directly to GLBT customers, we are working to develop better insights into this buyer group. One method for doing so is through GM PLUS, an internal GLBT employee affinity group."

I live in the Midwest out in the country on a gravel road, and I occasionally get animals like this burrowing in my yard, but they are smaller and just regular moles, so I just set a spring trap for them. They are pretty ugly.

Ralph L said...

Shouldn't you have addressed him as PETERsen?

I thought the ambiguity of "it feels" was clever, because I thought about its phallic shape (which I don't want to feel, whatever its sex) before its feelings about its own sex.

He became famous for claiming the reverse, so it's a joke about himself, too. I don't think men ever outgrow dick jokes, either, no matter how lame.

This weekend, we watched a group of men mob a woman giving a speech in Australia. And the Left is siding with the men. This should be horrifying to feminists, but they seem to be OK selling out women to protect the Left politically.
