""Look at what they’ve done to their own people. They’re destroying family, national identity, they are abusing their children."

"Even pedophilia is announced as a normal thing in the West.... And they’re recognizing same-sex marriages.... That’s fine that they’re adults. They’ve got the right to live their life. And we always, we’re very tolerant about this in Russia. Nobody is trying to enter private lives of people, and we’re not going to do this.... However, we need to tell them, but look at the scriptures of any religion in the world. Everything is said in there. And one of the things is that family is a union of a man and a woman.... Anglican Church is planning to consider the idea of a gender-neutral God.... What can you say here? Millions of people in the West understand that they are being led to spiritual destruction."

Said Vladimir Putin, in a speech, quoted by E.J. Dionne Jr., in "Putin pitches the American right with an ungodly invocation of God" (WaPo).

Gender? The sum total of sex-correlated attributes? You've come along way, baby.

Cisgender (i.e. same sexual)?

Trans- a state or process of divergence? As in transgender spectrum.

Religion (i.e. behavioral protocol): morality in a universal frame, ethics its relativist sibling, and law their politically consensual cousin.

Mortal gods and goddesses, experts, in nominally "secular societies, have diverse precedents.

Diversity [dogma] (i.e. color judgment, class-based bigotry? DIEversity. Class-disordered ideologies.

Political congruence ("=")?

Human rites?

Libertarian? Anarchist or the left-right nexus is leftist.

The immoderate middle?

The divergent liberal?

The monotonic progressive?

The conservative center?

If the 2024 election were between Joe Biden -- or any other Democrat, for that matter -- and Vlad Putin, Putin would get my vote. I would much rather have the Russians interfering in our elections than the God-damned Democrats.

During the Cold War, Americans called ourselves the leaders of the Free World, and considered the Soviet Union to be an evil dictatorship, oppressing its own populace and striving to extend its oppression over others. And we were not wrong. And neither is Vlad.

Does EJ Dionne think morals for a civil society are a right wing thing? I'm sure there are religious people (and non-religious) on the left who have a problem with cutting off body parts on kids, based on current trends. Maybe not at WaPo, but certainly out in the rest of the world. Putin's trying to connect with those in the West who look around and see with clear eyes, the decay of our Western Civilization. He's trying to buy some sympathetic space- buying time, as it were. He's got other plans.

While many of us may see the same thing Putin is talking about, it doesn't mean we're all in for Putin. But of course, our esteemed 'Journalists' would be floating that.

It has nothing to do with "the American right," and everything to do with the Global South, who want nothing to do with what our media betters are foisting on us. Of course the populist right is somewhat in touch with populist sentiment worldwide, which is "leave us alone and let us simply live our lives as we choose."

Dionne is simply doing his part in the propaganda war against American conservatives by linking them to Putin's mythical election interference, which is a US specialty that goes far beyond simple interference, into coups and outright invasions. The problem for the neocons is that nobody is buying their phantasmagoria used to divide people and negate the opposition to their nefarious schemes. Dionne is suggesting that any sympathy for traditional values is crypto-treason against "truth, justice, and the American way," as the old Superman episodes used to have it.

"Journalists" like Dionne are rewarded with cushy sinecures at prestige outlets, and invitations to all the right cocktail parties, for smearing normal Americans who prefer traditional values as "traitors." Who couldn't write this crap he writes? The hard part is looking at yourself in the mirror in the morning when shaving, unless you have a high degree of sociopathy in your personality, I guess.

LA DA Gascon suspends prosecutor for misgendering and 'deadnaming' trans child molester accused of murder
Hannah Tubbs went by James Tubbs when she attacked a 10-year-old girl in a Denny's bathroom

Shea Sanna, who had been the lead prosecutor for part of the case, is accused of misgendering and "deadnaming" the convicted child molester Hannah Tubbs, who is now accused of beating a man to death in the woods with a rock in Kern County.

Sanna has argued in the past that jailhouse phone calls show Tubbs, now 27, was attempting to use gender identity to game the justice system – an argument that sources say made others in Gascon's office uncomfortable and led to the suspension.

It is often estimated that 1% of the people born worldwide are sociopaths. They can't help it, but they are, and they quickly become experts at manipulating their fellow human beings to get what they want. Why would it surprise anybody that they would eventually take over the top rungs of a society and use their powers in ways that those of us born with normal emotional settings simply refuse to believe that anybody could do?

I've sometimes wondered if there is some kind of vast conspiracy to destroy the us. Destruction of our cities by crime drugs and homeless encampment, massive invasion by illegals, government and non govt censorship, deduction of our education system k-12 and college, overt political terrorism by fbi and other federal, state and local govt, the whole trans thing, putting Joe and kamala and people like fetter an in charge and much more.

Sometimes I think it is externally driven. By who, I don't know. Russia? China? EU? Some globalist cabal? I don't know.

Other times I think it is internal. Cia? Fbi? Deep state whoever they may be? Other govt actors?

It could just be incompetence but it feels like too much and too coordinated to be stochastic incompetence or coincidence.

Then I take my tinfoil hat off and my thoughts turn to blue skies and green meadows and I realize that govt really only has our best interests at heart

Well, much of the audience Dionne writes for has little or no morals as normal people understand them, so I would say that yes, he does.

I don't find anything objectionable in those quotes, but that's not why people are demonizing Putin. Millions of people are refugees and tens of thousands of people have been killed because Putin considers a full on military invasion the proper way to settle a border dispute....There's more ways than one to lead a country to spiritual destruction, and Russia has tried most of them. Putin is more an avatar of the KGB than of the Orthodox Church.

Over a long period of history, one of the guaranteed signs of a society in decline is the rise of unfettered sexual deviance.

The West has achieved that point; now we get to see how that plays out.

This war is multilayered. There's what we might call an 18th century layer: a struggle between empires. A 19th century layer: a conflict of nations. A 20th century layer: a conflict of political ideologies. And a 21st century layer: a struggle between ways of life, between our strange Western ways and a more traditional society. The conflict can't be reduced to any one of these.

That's why it's hard to come to terms with it. If we could have cut out the first and last levels, the conflict of empires and the struggle over LGBTQ we might have a more clear-cut view of the war. But if that were the case maybe there wouldn't have been a war.

A number of people commenting here are unable to grasp that Putin has no morals and is mouthing what he thinks he needs to say for maintaining power. How can anyone seriously believe that a former Soviet Communist and KGB officer has any real morality or true religious belief? He is just using another example of a pious lie in the service of the revolution is perfectly fine. He is first, last and only a Putanist and everything the sociopath does is only for the purpose.

------

The west had a huge amount of accumulated cultural and social capital to keep it going for decades as the managerial class became increasingly inept. It feels like it's coordinated because the whole system has finally been drained, and so the whole thing is very fragile and interconnected. To use another metaphore: the west is a tree which has rotted hollow, and is now collapsing under a strong storm.

He brings up homosexuality so often in these contexts that I have to think that it is either a big deal for him emotionally, or he thinks it is a big deal for whoever is listening. My recollection is that while a lot of people who are opposed to gay marriage - I don't approve, for example, but don't think the state has much of an interest - there is an 8% of the population which is motivated by disgust (see Jonathan Haidt's Moral Foundations, and yes, there are liberals motivated by disgust about hunting or NASCAR as well - separate issue) rather than some more intellectual or religious or philosophical concern. This seems to fit for Vlad.

@HuBiCrHeHo, Since DeSantis came out as skeptical of Biden's war in Ukraine, I am now willing to vote for him, but Ryan is part of the group that controls Fox News, so yeah, he counts, former speaker of the House who screwed the Republicans by refusing to fund the wall so that his libertarian backers could get cheap workers at the expense of American workers. Setting that aside, I don't know any "ever Trumpers" in an actual position of power who have threatened to abandon the party if they don't like what the primary voters produce. Do you?

@ Paul: "Except for slavery.. we ain't that far off."

We outsource and whitewash slavery today. Check in on China's Uyghurs by pointing your Made-in-China Apple device or Android device to Amnesty International or Doctors Without Borders.

Many Asian countries followed Japan's lead out of deep agrarian poverty (1868-1945), and into high-tech. Hong Kong, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. People in every country populated by dirt poor farmers or war victims will eagerly work for slave wages to stay alive. And in the case of China, they may well be literal slaves. The first generation in an industrializing country trades economic or literal slavery for a future better life. It also happened in the UK, Europe (e.g., Switzerland), the US, etc.

India suffers from abject poverty with no solution on the horizon. The "feel good" film Slumdog Millionaire didn't make me feel good...it revealed how hopeless the situation is in India's huge slums. The cream of India's needy work in international call centers and/or as spammers/scammers. "Hello. My name is Bob" they say with a strong accent...
