"Bashar al-Assad is laughing. Four days after an earthquake devastated northwest Syria, President Assad and his wife Asma visited sites of destruction..."

"... and survivors in regime-held Aleppo. This was Assad’s first public appearance after the natural disaster struck. He was not solemn. He was literally laughing."
Assad, 57, was filmed in a destroyed neighbourhood surrounded by cheering men as he shook their hands in the crowd. One man shouts that Aleppo is now no longer devastated because Assad is there. Assad laughs. The man asks for a selfie. The selfie of a laughing Assad is widely shared on social media. Assad and Asma, 47, then visit a hospital, where they exchange kisses with a crowd of women.
This is Syria’s Assad, the same dictator who has been butchering his people for more than a decade. Until the day of the earthquake, Assad’s air force — with Russian support — continued to bomb the opposition-held northwest, the area which was also worst hit by the natural disaster. Assad had always wanted the area destroyed, its people killed. The earthquake came and gave his deadly mission a tactical gain. His loyalists circulated online messages saying that divine intervention had saved Assad the cost of barrel bombs....

I thought we were supposed to feel bad about helping Turkey and not Syria. Glad I didn't give into the guilt trip previously offered us. People are suffering in Syria, but earthquakes are just one more reason for misery that I cannot control.

Too bad Syria doesn’t have a Second Amendment. Or a First Amendment.

The one immutable and absolute rule of the Middle East is that however cruel, stupid, and wretched the current ruler what or who comes after him next will be inevitably and immeasurably worse...Qaddaffi, Saddam, the Shah of Iran. Can anyone point to a regime change over there that resulted in something better.

I wonder what Sting thinks about this?

I sure hope the Syrians love their children too.

the local al queda splinter, hts, formerly the nusra front, has been blocking relief shipments into Iraq, remember when Bashir was the big bad, before Putin, when Clint Watts and Mrs O'Bagy was lining up support for the free syrians who defected to the salafis before the check cleared some 500 million was wasted, I know thats a penny in the whole Ukraine effort,

Why shouldn't he laugh. He's winning.

"He was literally laughing."

If one can "literally laugh" does that mean that one can also "figuratively laugh?"

Bing says, "Yes."

Figuratively laugh is not a common expression, but it could mean to use figurative language to create a humorous effect. Figurative language is when you stretch the actual meaning of words for effect, such as using metaphors, similes, hyperbole, etc. For example, you could say “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse” to exaggerate your hunger. This could make someone figuratively laugh if they find it funny.

I bring this up because saying someone can "literally" do something seems wrong. Either they can do something or they can't do something

I will now return the pedant to his cage.

I remember way back when Asad started attacking his own people, and all the powers that be just knew he would stop soon because he had a lovely English wife.

Quaking with laughter.

Of course, we have to pretend that there are Good Guys and Bad Guys in those parts, to justify our own adventures in Shitholia.

Assad's supporters know that he's the only thing between them--the educated, more-or-less secular, more-or-less multi-faith city dwellers around Damascus--and the Islamonutters who want to slit their throats.

The West will, of course, do all in its power to help the Islamonutters.

Assad is a secular dictator. His presence protects the Christian minorities in Syria. If his regime is destroyed, as the US wishes, the Christian minorities in Syria will be annihilated just as they were in Iraq after the United States government destroyed its secular dictatorship. In Iraq the United States kicked down the door and ISIS came through. The US regime is trying to do the same thing again in Syria, except on the cheap this tone. And if it succeed, after the bloodbath, they’ll say oh, terribly sorry, that’s not what we meant! The USA should just get the hell out of the region and stop gratuitously destroying countries where it has no business. There are not going to be western style liberal democracies in that region, ever. Forget that. We barely have one in our own country anymore. I’m not interested in seeing another bloodbath of my fellow Christians caused by the United States government. Assad is better than the alternatives.

After Obama/Biden's World War Spring series, a kinetic dislocation to secure the peace... pieces. It's enough to make you cry, or laugh, in anticipation.

Can people stop being so dumb. This is obvious propaganda. Is Assad a good guy? No. Is he worse than Xi or the Saudi princes, or the Castro family, or a zillion other authoritarians around the world? No.

Why didn't we send aid to Syria to help the earthquake victims? WHy are we still sanctioning Syria and causing untold suffereing? Why are USA troops and other foreign troops still there?
why is there a war still going on?

This is like Yeman, where we're supported the Saudi's and their endless war that killed hundreds of thousands. Stop will all these endless wars, and moronic hate.

A fund (sic) of America, Obama's premature evacuation from Iraq, then Biden sustaining his legacy with a premature evacuation from Afghanistan, and, of course, his for-profit enterprise in Ukraine.
