The boathouses reminded me of the colorful houses in South America, and looking east from the ramp in evening twilight, with golden light from the windows against fifty shades of blueberry in the sky, the water, and the land, made it a wondrous place. So my brother and I both fell away from church, because we were too cool for that crowd. And my Mom wanted us both to go to a hot dog cookout for the Young Episcopalians at somebody's house. So we could meet people our own age at church. That was her idea. My brother and I both did not want to go.

"That's so gay, Mom."

"Yeah, Mom."

"We don't want to do that, Mom."

Three hours later, my brother and I find ourselves at the home of somebody we don't know, in their backyard, at the cookout. We don't know anybody. Never saw any of these people before. So my brother and I were standing off to the side, by ourselves. Which was awkward.

"I don't see anybody I know."

"I know."

"This is so stupid."

"How does she win these arguments?"

"Who, Mom?"

"Yeah."

"I don't know."

"How long do we have to stay here?"

"Maybe eat a couple of hot dogs. I guess."

A nice young man who is probably throwing the BBQ party at his nice house comes over to shake our hands.

"Hi, I'm Fred. Nice to meet you." And he shakes our hands. "Is this your brother?"

So I've been watching The Funeral by Juzo Itami. He's an awesome Japanese filmmaker. Tampopo is his most famous movie. He also did A Taxing Woman. Unfortunately Japanese gangsters murdered him for making fun of them. Yakuza have no sense of humor. Shit for brains!

So while I'm still watching this sweet Japanese movie about a funeral, I get sleepy. And I take a nap. And I had a dream about a Japanese ghost that was trying to get to Tokyo. (Japanese ghosts are very nice ghosts, very polite, very friendly). And one of these ghosts is stuck at Christ Church. And he's whispering in somebody's ear.

"Fred. Fred! I need to go to Tokyo. Please fly to Tokyo so I can go with you. I need to get home to Tokyo to see my family. Please help me. Can you hear me? I am a Japanese ghost."

The next time I'm in a Bible study, I share this dream about a Japanese ghost stuck at Christ Church. And I ask them what it means.

"It means you're a moron."

"Okay, that's not what it means."

"It means you go on the internet and call yourself Saint Croix and pretend like you're some kind of spiritual warrior--"

"Okay, that's not fair."

"--and all you really want to do is make money on the internet."

"Wow. So cynical."

"Do you really think Christ Church is haunted with ghosts?"

"I did not say that. You need to take that class where they teach you how to listen."

"The hell you did."

"Now, wait a second," says Fred, who's a sweetheart of a man. "You know Joseph had a dream. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream. Prophets have dreams. You know the Holy Spirit? That's a ghost, right?"

"Oh my God. Fred, I swear. There are prophets, and there are guys trying to make money on the internet. You have to discern between the two, right?"

"I just want to say, Fred, in my dream, he was whispering in your ear."

That's when the whole room cracks up.

"Oh wow. So I have to go Tokyo?"

"Hold on," I said. "Could have been another Fred. I couldn't see the face. So I don't know which Fred it was. Could have been you. But it could have been--"

And that's when a priest named Fred walks into the room.

I believe the Holy Spirit pops into people and gives them unbelievable strength and courage. When this happens you feel different and act different.

When the Holy Spirit is gone you're like, "What just happened? Why did I do that? Why I did I say that?"

If I say something that sounds like prophesy, it might be Saint Croix + Holy Spirit.

Or not, that's the confounding thing. It might be Saint Croix + Satan.

Our ancestors called this being "possessed by a spirit."

In the 21st century we don't believe in this. Many of us think that individuals are responsible for everything. I believe this too! You have free will! When the Holy Spirit possesses you or Satan possesses you, the human soul has the ability and the authority and the power to say, "NO!"

But what fucks you up is that the Holy Spirit, or Satan, can possess you and give you a feeling of incredible strength and courage. And you do or say things that you normally wouldn't do or say. But maybe you want to.

Saint Croix + Holy Spirit = a man who doesn't care if he never has sex again. Such a man speaks the truth about abortion, even if it turns him into a celibate.

Saint Croix without Holy Spirit = I cannot believe I said that, better delete that shit quick

Saint Croix + Satan = I can fuck multiple ladies and I just might and nobody can stop me.

Does that sort of make sense?
