"I've never seen the video. But what I’ve heard is very horrific, very horrific. And any of you who have children, please don’t let them see it."

"To the five police officers that murdered my son, you also disgraced your own families when you did this. I’m going to pray for you and your families, because at the end of the day, this shouldn’t have happened. This just shouldn’t have happened. We want justice for my son, justice for my son.”

Said RowVaughn Wells, Tyre Nichols’s mother, quoted in "Tyre Nichols Live Updates: Memphis to Release ‘Appalling’ Police Video/People who have seen the footage say it shows five police officers, who have been fired and charged with murder, beating Mr. Nichols, who died three days later. His family and officials have called for peaceful protest" (NYT).
Tony Romanucci, a lawyer for Mr. Nichols’s family, said the family is asking the Memphis Police Department to disband the specialized unit that was formed to help halt a surge of violence in the city. “The intent of the SCORPION unit has now been corrupted,” he said....

The release of the video is scheduled for sometime after 6 p.m. Central time on Friday.... Officials and the Nichols family pleaded with the public not to let outrage over what they see on the video spill into unrest....

Would be interesting if violence and rioting follows from 5 black cops beating a black suspect to death.

Memphis has one of the highest homicide rates of US cities. A shortage of police officers.

This is the future of big city policing.

I'm sure it is horrific. I don't know why people feel a need to protest - from what I'm seeing, the city officials agree that this was a terrible act and plan to prosecute the five police officers. Will smashing someone's windows, burning someone's car, or looting someone's property change anything?

This is terrible.

The police chief in Tennessee is a Georgia native I believe. She tried to do the right thing in a case while she was still new in the police force here in Georgia. As a consequence she lost her job until an independent investigation cleared her name and she came back to the force and went on to bigger and better things.

The story was on the morning news radio.

I have written prior that meeting a cop for ANY reason could well be the last mistake you make. Any reason at all for cops are VERY dangerous beasts and the slightest resistance can and will make them go insane. With a badge and a gun. My own deflection for decades and that to 5 countries where I have lived? When dealing with ANY cop humor is the deal. Admit whatever the F happened did happen and ask for ticket. Politely. All the while keeping hands in the clear. I have had multiple police refuse to give me ticket once I made them laugh and feel that I am no threat and even then I remain in danger until copper leaves and this poor boy learned that the hard way.

Every Black over the age of 13 should be given an opportunity to earn $100 by attending a 30-minute class about their behavior around police officers.

The class's essential teachings:

* Do not resist arrest.

* Do not try to run away from a police encounter.

It's obvious that too many Blacks do not understand those concepts.

The money would be well spent and can be considered to be part of their "reparations" for slavery and Jim Crow.

Never ceases to amaze me how the elephant in the room never gets talked about, which is precisely whose ideas are running these cities. Partisan politics aside, when was the last time you saw any big city politician take responsibility for the local PD's actions? They're supposed to oversee the police; do they actually ever bother to do that?

It's like the police are this vast separate conspiracy that the politicians can't do anything about, besides wring their hands. You have police brutality going on? Why, we have no responsibility whatsoever for that... Never mind decades of supposed oversight by those self-same politicians. Look at Minneapolis and the Diamond killing; zero responsibility taken for having leveraged a high-profile, underqualified minority onto the force, or the aftermath of having done that. Likewise, with Chauvin; nobody ever seems to want to mention that he was acting within the training and instruction he'd received as a police officer, with full concurrency of the politicians overseeing the department he worked for over the course of decades. Minneapolis hasn't had a Republican elected mayor or majority city council since fer-f*cking-ever, but somehow, the police department that city government has oversight on is the fault of Republicans? WTF?

Same-same here with this deal in Memphis; how long have the cops been behaving like that? This isn't a one-off aberration, either; Memphis PD is bad enough that I was required to give people safety briefings about avoiding contact with them when we did training at Fort Campbell and allowed people to take weekends off. That was in the mid-2000s, so it ain't like this is news to anyone. Memphis natives I've known and interacted with all told me to be damn sure I didn't go into the wrong neighborhoods, and to avoid all contact with Memphis PD for any reason whatsoever. I heard that from white and black locals, both.

So, they finally screwed up bad enough to make the national and international news? And, it's suddenly a f*cking problem? Where was the attention when this problem was presenting itself, before? Because, I guarantee you that this case wasn't the first one where a pack of cops in Memphis did some feral youth-style wilding of their own.

Christ, one of the girls I had working for me who was from around there in Tennessee told me about having been on a bachelorette party in Memphis when things went seriously wrong, and a bunch of the women involved got the ever-loving snot beaten out of them by the cops. That was mostly black-on-black, as well, from the way she described it. Her take on the Memphis PD was that they were just another street gang, but with better lawyers.

Yeah, well here's the problem: This was other blacks doing the beating, wearing cop uniforms. And, there was apparently damn little cause, from what I can tell.

The root problem isn't in the cops or the black community, really. It's in that gray area where social conduct meets institution: If you examine just why most whites don't have "cop problems" it's because they don't give the cops problems. Similarly, when most blacks give cops problems, then every interaction becomes a situation ripe with potential to go wrong. I've had actual serving black cops tell me things that would have a Grand Dragon of the KKK hearing that and responding with "Hey, now... You can't be saying things like that..." Black Chicago cops were some of the worst, most hateful anti-black racists I've ever encountered in my life. Some of them were advocates of lining up bulldozers in front of armed men, and plowing most of Southside Chicago into the lake, and then shooting anybody that got past the dozers... I kid you not.

So... How'd it get this bad? Self-reinforcing circle of self-fulfilled prophecy. The young black males all project that the cops are bad people and want to beat them down; the cops experience all that, and almost inevitably turn into the very thing a lot of them joined the force to fix. They hate young black males more than they hate white racists, a lot of them... And, why? Because they look at those thug-like cretins and see the living expression and justification for all the racist crap those white racists threw at them.

It's a weird little self-referential circle, and it ain't just racist. We give badges and the right to arrest to a lot of people in this country who have zero business having them. Look at that guy who got shot in his trailer in South Carolina back in December; zero cause for that, but the SWAT team lit his ass up for coming to the door with the very camera they threw into his trailer. White-on-white violence, there. Same with the guy who got shot in that hotel hallway in Mesa, Arizona. Again, no element of racism.

(cont)

takirks म्हणाले...

The actual problem here is twofold: Society is conditioning cops to do these things, and cops are conditioning society to react to them the way they are. It's circular; police bad conduct leads young black males to distrust the police and act aggressively towards them, and that reinforces with the police that young black males are dangerous. Even other black cops know this, and react accordingly. Go look up the stats on who usually initiates violence against cops; it ain't old white guys doing it. It's almost to the point that if you ever ask the question of "Who killed that cop...?", and you don't know? Pick the black guy in the lineup; he's gonna "be the guy" in way too many cases. It's statistically aberrant, but there you are: FBI stats prove out the proposition that the young black male has an exponentially higher chance of being a threat to any cop's life than not. And, all the cops know this.

So, whose fault is it? Everybody's. You start from a premise that it's possible to keep a guy off the force because he tested "too high", and then train them for sh*t? Guess what? You're going to get sh*t cops. You have to almost have a 4-year degree and a lot of practical experience to be a beat cop in a lot of European countries. Here? LOL... The standards are pretty damn low. There's also a lot more accountability; in Austria, you draw your pistol? You'd better have a damn good reason; Austrian cops are expected to have shot someone with proper cause, every time they draw down. For them, the pistol isn't something they use as a threat display; you make them draw? You're getting shot.

Why did five black police officers feel it necessary to beat a black man evading them after a traffic stop?

I have heard no reason given or discussed. And on one level it doesn't make a difference. They should not have beaten a man to death.

But,

I know from personal experience that every police officer feels a traffic stop is dangerous. And they don't like to be insulted, or have to chase someone - which creates yet another dangerous situation. And when an individual resists arrest, policemen are likely to respond with overwhelming force to control the situation as quickly as possible, Just as Colin Powell responded to Sadam.

And, police sometimes take just into their own hands, based on a belief that the prosecutors and courts will not, and cannot punish all crimes. And who can say this assumption is wrong, particularly today. I suspect policemen are particularly likely to do so when the suspect represents a threat to the community, particularly communities the police live in.

And in that sense, the root causes of these policemen's actions do matter to all of us. Not as a reason to justify their individual behavior, but for us as members of a larger society to think through what type of culture we wishes to live in.

All police feel safer, when they are respected and feared. So at the margin, these things happen, even though we aspire to be a nation of laws, not men. If we want to live in safe and law abiding communities, we have to address officer safety and respect. Otherwise we will have neither.

Regardless of what race they are, cops are following the same behavioral patterns that wolves are following when it comes to prey animals: What runs, gets pursued. What ambles along confidently? Gets left the hell alone, a lot of the time. Mainly because that's aberrant behavior that the wolf pack can't process; why isn't this animal running from us? Oh; probably diseased or it knows something we don't.

Cops are people, and people are just like any other pursuit-driven hunter: Once you start fleeing, you're indicating you're worth following. Cops in situations like these are doing exactly what all the rest of us would be doing in their shoes: If it runs, it dies. If it runs and resists, it dies even harder.

You have to be really and truly oblivious not to figure this crap out early on, and I don't know why there are so many young black males that can't process the facts of what they're presenting to cops by their behavior. It's not like they don't do the same damn thing in sports and in any fighting they do; it's like they can't conceive of the cops as being human like they are, and have no idea how their actions present to those humans-with-badges. Which, funnily enough, is proven out right here in this incident: Young black male encounters cops, fails to comprehend what his behavior is going to trigger, and bang, zoom... We have us an incident.

Which smacks of blaming the victim, but... The victim, in this case, is a part of the problem. It may well be, however, that he didn't even grasp he was dealing with cops, being as they were in unmarked cars and not in complete police uniform.

You might want to ask yourself if this isn't happening to their plan.

Alternatively, you might want to question the premise that these people are either competent or capable of learning from experience.

Biggest problem I see in the entire culture right now is that there's an utter lack of accountability and consequence across a very broad swathe of society. All these wunnerful, wunnerful technocratic genius types who keep telling us that they're gonna fix everything, and that they know best? Do they? Are they "fixing" things, or making them worse?

And, more importantly, why the hell isn't the electorate holding them accountable? How do these cities keep returning incompetents to office, year after year, election after election? Could it be that there's deep-rooted corruption in the election process, perhaps? Why are the cities simultaneously "strongholds of the Democratic Party", yet almost always at the same time perfect exemplars of their demonstrated incompetence and corruption, when it comes to actual, y'know... Governance?

Yet, somehow, time after time in these cases, they manage to deflect it and make it all about the other party, making them out to be "at fault", when the Democrats have dominated the city governance in these communities for decade after decade.

Whose fault is that? Introduce yourself to him, in the mirror when you next shave. It's you, me, all of us. Very soon, we're going to have to make a choice: Do we want this to continue?

This was sadism by people who like having power over other people. They're so absurdly entitled and out of control that they did all this while wearing cameras.

Besides which, they're supposed to be trained to be *better* at handling a dangerous situation than the general public; that's why we trust them with guns.

Certainly, there are times when police genuinely fear for their safety and legitimately need to use deadly force. But none of them here were scared; none of them drew a gun. They were angry and felt disrespected, and so they kicked the crap out of him.

There have been almost twice as many murders in Atlanta each year since George Floyd died May 2020 as there were in the years before. These murders are concentrated in the black community. In 2021 there were 139 murders in the first ten months of the year. Only 5 were in the white community. It's time to stop and think but Dems simply cannot. All they can think is that it cannot be that they are as wrong about police reform as a doubling the murder rate which is concentrated in the black community makes them sound And this video makes it plain that the police have not been reformed into a kinder, gentler bunch either. The black community will vote for the Dems anyway. I have no idea what to say beyond that. Maybe the poet Longfellow got it when he said: "There is poor blind Samson in this land."

Running away seemed sort of senseless considering he left his car and would have been traced through his car registration, unless the car was stolen? What was the point? What was his reason? Mostly I saw a bunch of out of shape police hanging around trying to catch their breath and recuperate.

I've seen so many videos of people getting beat up in the subway and lunchrooms and classrooms etc., and get worse beat downs than this. Here's a story and video of a young Jewish guy getting kicked and hit with sticks on the streets of NY, for example. Looks worse to me. They ripped him out and beat him and pepper sprayed him for two minutes BEFORE he ran. FOR WHAT?? You can't do that to people for a motor vehicle infraction, however scared for their lives this armed to the teeth and vested paramilitary unit felt for no discernable reason. They did not act lawfully from the start, and he obviously felt he needed to run for his life, WHICH HE DID because they were already beating him and then they beat him to death.

You need to ask yourself why you are knee jerk defending cops that the POLICE UNIONS refuse to defend, that their supervisors refuse to defend, that every police trainer and expert castigates. Why you are primarily concerned with the feelings of safety of heavily armed and out of control cops who literally beat a man to death.

Why was the police force's paramilitary unit doing roving traffic enforcement with guns drawn? Is this East Germany or the Soviet Union? That is fascist and cannot happen in this country.

People raising Jan 6 and Ashley Babbot who just cannot give a fuck that a man was pulled from his car and beaten to death for sport or annoyance by agents of the state. Who are over on the rabidly racist other thread talking about genetics and crime statistics and black cops and this being a street fight and black people just love resisting arrest and race race race race race race race race race race race race race race.

Do you have a problem with a secret service agent shooting a woman coming through a just broken window at the head of a mob into an area with a whole bunch of congresspeople?

Well then you should have a problem with a man driving to his mom's house who was pulled from his car and beaten to death for nothing at all by the local government's military unit.

Will smashing someone's windows, burning someone's car, or looting someone's property change anything?
New sneakers, cartons of cigs, plasma tv, Xboxes, ... yeah, changes a lot.

When you can't even get the basic facts correct, why should the rest of us pay any attention to your temper tantrum?
