She is lovely on screen and in real life. One of the best acceptance speeches- right up there with Michael Caine…

tim maguire ayon kay ...

I like that her speech seemed unprepared, like she wasn't ready to win and just spoke from the heart. You don't see that very often.

Dave Begley ayon kay ...

Quick cuts, but were men wearing dresses?

Ryan ayon kay ...

Well deserved, truly great show.

I see there was a separate post and comments on The White Lotus: https://althouse.blogspot.com/2023/01/we-binge-watched-2-seasons-of-white.html

A friend offered an observation that I agree with, regarding season 1 especially: It was like one long episode of Fawlty Towers, but less funny.
That said, Armond was a great character.

I'm glad that she has at long last found fame and fortune and her rightful place among the greats. Seems a little over the top to me, but I guess they're paid to go over the top. Luminescent soap bubbles. If they catch the light in just the right way are more impressive than the shattered visage of Ozymandias among the lone and level sands.

Amexpat ayon kay ...

I see now it wasn't much of a stretch for her to play Tonya in White Locus.

Dave Begley ayon kay ...

The winner of the Golden Globe for Best Adapted Screenplay is.... Dave Begley.

Njal's Saga is epic. This is not epic.

Rusty ayon kay ...

She was the Lenny and Squiggy in "Two Broke Girls". Reall. The only reason to watch the show.

Peachy ayon kay ...

Dave B - yes.
they are also pregnant.

Lyle ayon kay ...

Well deserved. Jennifer Coolidge is such a hoot.

Lurker21 ayon kay ...

I saw some of White Lotus. I thought it was very good. All the hoopla, though, made me expect more, so I wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be. It reminded me a bit of Christopher Guest's films, which Jennifer Coolidge has also appeared in. A similar wry sense of humor, though not as farcical. The serious or semi-serious side of the show made it very different from Faulty Towers.

It didn't strike me as "politically correct," but in the special features, I noticed the people involved talking up the show in PC terms: rich white people without real problems worrying about petty things and oppressing the people of color on the staff. But don't people at that level in Hollywood also qualify as "people without real problems," whether they are White or not? Haven't sitcoms always focused on comical pseudo-problems, whether or not the characters also have real problems? And isn't snotty, stuck-up rich people oppressing the lowly of whatever color another familiar comedy trope? Things that are worthy enough on their own terms have to be put through the DEI machine for publicity purposes, and it doesn't do much for them.

farmgirl ayon kay ...

Idk White Lotus, but I know this actress by her physique, her voice and her characters in various movies/shows.

She’s a ticket.
She’s a keeper.
Bravo.

farmgirl ayon kay ...

Rusty: exactly!

daskol ayon kay ...

I’ve loved Stifler’s mom ever since Best in Show.

"Martin Heidegger was recorded to have laughed only once...."

What does this even mean? What percentage of the time that someone laughs is the event "recorded"?

Temujin ayon kay ...

Hilarious acceptance speech. Who knew they even still did these award shows? Anyway...Jennifer Coolidge is one of those people you see in a role and always love, but never know who she is. Now I know. Loved her in 'Best in Show'.

Everyday I get another push to watch "White Lotus". I'll have to give it a try.

wendybar ayon kay ...

I only know her from her from her Old Navy Christmas ad.

Jake ayon kay ...

Good for them. I imagine it would be pretty damn gratifying to achieve that kind of recognition and success for something that apparently few others believed in. FWIW, I hope they do make a few more American Pie movies. Stiffler's Mom is an iconic character.

richlb ayon kay ...

Strange that every time she's cast they make her do that childish kitten voice even though she sounds nothing like that. I know that's what they call typecasting, but still.

richlb ayon kay ...

I know she was fumbling for who to thank, but odd that she didn't single out Christopher Guest.

Bend and snap from Legally Blonde is one of the best moments ever!

Great speech. But if I were an actress, I'd watch my waistline. A dress can only hide so much. Just sayin'

Curious George ayon kay ...

"Rusty said...She was the Lenny and Squiggy in "Two Broke Girls". Reall. The only reason to watch the show."

No, there were a couple of other big reasons to watch that show.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

I’m afraid to start season two, because I doubt it can live up to my experience of #one.

Peachy ayon kay ...

The giant hook. lol.

All the other hillarywoodland jerks need a giant hook.

Joe Smith ayon kay ...

Don't know her.

People in Hollywood can fuck themselves...

Christopher ayon kay ...

That's great, happy for them both. "My neighbors are talking to me..." lol

rrsafety ayon kay ...

She was hilarious and scary in this year's "The Watcher".
Folks are saying season 2 of White Lotus is better than season one, and apparently you'd didn't need to see 1 to understand 2.

🎶 Stifler's mom, has got it going on...🎶

In a business where being center stage is the goal, a 4-minute speech about yourself and the people who saw what you see is par.

robother ayon kay ...

Watching this, couldn't help but think of Sondheim:

First you're another
Sloe-eyed vamp
Then someone's mother
Then you're camp

Anthony ayon kay ...

Is that why she started appearing in Old Navy commercials.

Wasn't she in that dog show mockumentary? That was a hoot.

Joe Smith ayon kay ...

'Great speech. But if I were an actress, I'd watch my waistline. A dress can only hide so much. Just sayin''

I think she is long-past 'voluptuous' and is embracing fat.

KellyM ayon kay ...

@Rusty: I loved Jennifer Coolidge's character on "Two Broke Girls" as well. I loved her zaniness and willingness to sometimes be the butt of a joke.

And yes, I do recall her in "Best in Show". I need to watch that again.

If I'm not mistaken, she hails from Holliston, MA.

Sister According to Jim.

Rollo ayon kay ...

I'm not a fan, but her resilience and persistence are admirable. She couldn't make it as a dramatic or romantic lead, but comedy really paid off for her.

Freeman Hunt ayon kay ...

A peek into what it's actually like to be an actor.

Achilles ayon kay ...

Never seen this person or anything they have done that I can remember before.

Epic?

Amazing!

Unprecedented!

Great in "Best in Show". didn't like her on the Old Navy Christmas commercials.
