Post 13 of 15 - Top 10 Favorite "New" Songs of 2022
#3 - U2 - Blow Your House Down (Achtung Baby Deluxe Edition, 2011)

I got the original version of 'Achtung Baby' on CD when it came out in 1991. I wasn't even aware that U2 had put out a Deluxe Edition in 2011 and a 30th Anniversary Edition in 2021, so I kind of stumbled across this one by accident. You listen to this and you wonder why it didn't make the original album, because it's a great song.

How did Fraudci end up owning the patents he received for work done while working for the Federal government? Those patents should belong to the government, not him. That's the way it works at Boeing.

I and a friend received a patent award for an improved stall warning system. We received a bonus payment when the patent department decided to apply for a patent and another bonus after the patent was approved. Any royalty payments would go to Boeing, not us. The work we did on the system belonged to Boeing, as did the patent.

So, why did Fraudci wind up receiving all of those royalty payments? They rightfully belong to the Federal government. Who did he payoff to own those patents?

I retraced my steps today but the girl with the ponytail at the bus-stop was no longer there.

It's probably for the best.

The girl with the ponytail at the bus-stop:

God, I hope the bus isn't late again.

Because when the bus is late in the morning I have to stay at work longer in the evening.

Then I leave later and I have to catch the rush-hour bus home.

And the rush-hour bus is always late.

And slow: the rush-hour bus is so slow.

So I get home in the dark because I was five minutes late in the morning but now I'm an hour-and-fifteen-minutes late in the evening and I'm tired and my cat is hungry and I have to feed the cat before I can feed myself.

And of course there is next to nothing in the fridge, because I was late yesterday and I blew off stopping for groceries, which I should've then done today except I'm tired and it was dark and the cat needed to be fed.

So I am having a cheese sandwich without mayonnaise because I ran out of mayonnaise three days ago, and I am not having any lettuce on the sandwich because the lettuce is old and wilted and brown.

So I absolutely have to get groceries tomorrow. Absolutely.

Of course, I said that yesterday, but I didn't know the bus would be late this morning.

Except it's late pretty much every day.

So maybe I should try to catch the earlier bus.

Plus, I would then miss that guy who stares at me at the bus stop every day.

Every day.

He never gets on the bus; he just stands there and stares. His eyes look like licorice.

So it would be good if I missed him by taking the earlier bus, getting off work on time, stopping for groceries and then getting home and eating my own damned meal before feeding the cat.

Because I HAVE to get groceries tomorrow, anyway: my box red wine is almost empty...

I am Laslo.

Not the way it works at a university, at least at the UW. We owned our patents if we wanted to. OTOH, we were then on our own to do all the filing work. Or, we could assign them to the university and they would file. However, IIRC, if there was federal money involved we had to assign them to the university.

Original Mike said...

Recalling more on patents (hey, it's been awhile). If federal grant money was involved, it was required that the university make a decision on whether they wanted to take ownership and file. This was required by the Bayh-Dole act (as in Birch Bayh and Bob Dole). If they declined, then patent rights were ours to do with as we wanted. If they did decide to take ownership, we would get a percentage of royalties. That usually didn't amount to much, but if the patent turned into a big money maker, the inventor could end up with quite a sum.

I have Das Boot, the television series about a WWII German submarine. At first I was a little miffed that it was a 2018 production, and not the original 1981 German limited series that was edited down into a theatrical release, but it's watchable and not bad. New plots and complications and a less grim, grimy, and claustrophobic.

Interesting New Criterion review of a recent book about J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Hoover has long been considered a die-hard right-winger. In a sense he was, but he came into government with Wilson, gained great power under FDR, and was more obliging to LBJ than to Nixon. He was a creature of the administrative state and the bureaucracy, and when the government and bureaucracy found new enemies in the post-Hoover Era, his agency naturally went after them.

In the years when young leftists hated Hoover, he was actually distancing himself and the agency from Nixon. The reviewer sees Nixon as a kind of Trump figure and Nixon's New Federalism as a threat to the administrative state and the Washington blob. I don't think so, but the review was interesting and it sounds like the book is as well.

The latest note from Matt Taibbi archeological dig at Twitter.

In the coming days you’ll find a new thread on Twitter, along with a two-part article here at TK explaining the latest #TwitterFiles findings. Even as someone in the middle of it, naturally jazzed by everything I’m reading, I feel the necessity of explaining why it’s important to keep hammering at this.

Any lawyer who’s ever sifted though a large discovery file will report the task is like archaeology. You dig a little, find a bit of a claw, dust some more and find a tooth, then hours later it’s the outline of a pelvis bone, and so on. After a while you think you’re looking at something that was alive once, but what?

Who knows? At the moment, all we can do is show a few pieces of what we think might be a larger story. I believe the broader picture will eventually describe a company that was directly or indirectly blamed for allowing Donald Trump to get elected, and whose subjugation and takeover by a furious combination of politicians, enforcement officials, and media then became a priority as soon as Trump took office.

When I was younger, every once in a blue moon I would run into somebody who was androgynous. And I couldn't tell if this was a male or a female.

What I've noticed in my own community is that the number of androgynous people has dramatically increased. This is very strange because it's happening primarily in the youth generation, millennials and younger.

So is this a biological phenomenon? My strong suspicion is no, this is not a biological phenomenon. This is man-made. That's why we're seeing a dramatic escalation in androgyny in young people.

It's drugs. It's hormone "therapy." It's doctors giving estrogen to boys and testosterone to girls.

These are steroids. When I was a kid, we were warned about steroids. Young boys who wanted to get muscles would take steroids. We were told this was dangerous and would lead to cancer.

Do they warn young girls that are taking steroids that they are increasing their risk for cancer?

The "doctors" who are prescribing steroids to children, and pumping them full of sex hormones, are causing cancer in their patients. They are also fucking up the sex lives of their patients, and dramatically increasing suicide risk.

Back in the 1960's, doctors discovered a birth control pill. It was a miracle! We could have sex with no risk of pregnancy!

The early birth control pills were loaded up with estrogen. Cancer rates dramatically rose. Breast cancer increased, because breast cancer is linked to estrogen.

Even today our medical establishment lies about the cancers caused by their therapies.

I like birth control (not a Catholic) but I ask you: is it therapy? We are all corrupt liars who love sex, and love birth control, and when cancer rates go up we scratch our heads. And prescribe more sex hormones for our children.

Appalling, and unlike the infanticides of our abortion "providers," the children who were "treated" are still alive. It's a slow-ticking time bomb. But in my lifetime we're going to see an epidemic of cancer and suicide affecting one generation.

That's how we handled it at my aerospace company. But usually only if we didn't want to spend the money to prosecute the patent. Patents were more about restricting competition than making huge profits (royalties) from licensing.

I don't care what happened with Fauci - he's a grifter. Born to grift and married - apparently - to the ethics czar of NIH who profits from the grift.

The government owns the patents and government scientists are listed as inventors so they can share in licensing deals struck with private parties. Maximum payouts to the inventors, cannot exceed $150,000. Royalties received by the government for owned patents are routinely put back into government-sponsored research.

Dr. Fauci is listed as the inventor of 12 patents. Obviously, he is far smarter than the average "bear" who resides at Mar-a-Lago.

Expert knowledge is limited knowledge: and the unlimited ignorance of the plain man who knows only what hurts is a safer guide, than any vigorous direction of a specialised character. Why should you assume that all except doctors, engineers etc., are drones or worse?

To manage men, to explain difficult things to simple people, to reconcile opposite interests, to weigh the evidence of disputing experts, to deal with the clamorous emergency of the hour; are not these things in themselves worth the consideration and labour of a lifetime? If the Ruler is to be an expert in anything he should be an expert in everything; and that is plainly impossible. Wherefore I say from the dominion of all specialists (particularly military specialists) good Lord deliver us.

ha ha ha

Don't blame me for that shit!

I mean, they mailed it to me. I was like, "What the fuck is this?" And I've been out of toilet paper all week, been using paper towels. The other day I was in the fucking grocery store and I forgot to buy toilet paper (again). So it was a blessing, a real blessing, to have this massive paper delivery to my house. Because paper towels are a little rough after a couple of days. It's no fucking Cottonelle, let me tell you.

(Blogger does not like Conttonelle, apparently. I'm spelling it right, you fucking machine who doesn't have an ass to wipe, like you know anything!)

Anyway, I can't even tell you how much paper they shipped to me. It was a shitload, as the farmers say. (Apologies to the ladies on the Althouse blog who do not like the rough talk -- but you got to clean assholes, it's a fact!)

That was my story, anyway, when the Feds showed up at my house. Secret Service, FBI, Joe Biden. I thought I was in pro-life trouble or some damn thing. Turns out he just wanted to sign a bill.

"Why'd they sent it to me?" I said, because they were really unhappy with the missing pages. They had me in handcuffs and everything. I was like, "It was the fucking oreos, okay?"

(Blogger, if you don't know what a fucking oreo is, I don't know what to tell you -- I can spell the four-letter words!)

Anyway, thank God, he signed it without reading it. I think they have another copy somewhere else. Probably. I mean, I know it's a shitty bill. (Confession time -- I didn't read it either, and frankly the texture was a little sloppy).

The good news is that I'm not in Guantanamo. The bad news is now I have an urge to wash my hands.

(That damn Joe Biden stuck his hand out -- when I was out of handcuffs -- and I shook it up and down like a damn hypocrite).

"I think he's just an idiot," the President said to the FBI guy. So y'all leave Joe Biden alone! He's not so bad. I didn't get drone-killed or nothing. It could be a lot worse.

"Just be glad you're out of the womb," is what I say. "Lot safer out here!" And that's the last time I go off-brand on my toilet paper, I swear.

There is no such thing as inventing oneself from nothing unless a person grew up in isolation. The traditionally “indoctrinated” looks of the younger girls are based on trying to look attractive to most human beings, especially those of the opposite sex. This is a natural phenomenon in most species of animals but done with man made artifices. The later photos all express rejection of those norms of attraction.

The only other option is a more neutral look which is also apparent in some of the younger photos, without much makeup or artifice. But the whole concept of projecting any particular look is either in congruence with cultural norms of attractiveness or in opposition to it.
