Post 12 of 15 - Top 10 Favorite "New" Songs of 2022
#4 - RTZ - Given You Up For Dead (Lost, 1998)

Around 1989, lead singer Brad Delp was on hiatus from the band Boston and got together with former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau to collaborate on songwriting. They brought in keyboardist Brian Maes, drummer Dave Stefanelli and bassist Tim Archibald and formed RTZ. Their first album, 'Return To Zero,' was released in 1991, with the most successful single being the ballad "Until Your Love Comes Back Around." The band felt that their label wasn't giving them enough support and started looking for a new label, but about that time, Delp reunited with Boston for the album 'Walk On' and the rest of the band felt they couldn't replace him and disbanded at that point. There were enough recordings from the original sessions for another album, released as 'Lost' in 1998. This album and other songs from the sessions were re-released in 2005 as two albums 'Lost And Found In America.'

This song selection was a tough choice, because I loved several RTZ songs. In the end, it came down to either "There's Another Side" from the 'Return To Zero' album, or this one. If you liked Brad Delp's vocals with Boston, you almost certainly should check out all of the RTZ songs you can find. You won't be disappointed.

RTZ - Given You Up For Dead

Bonus song: RTZ - There's Another Side (Return To Zero, 1991)

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I would have sworn this was going to be #4, but "Given You Up For Dead" came on strong at the end of the year.

I just want to recommend Rod Dreher's lastest Opus about his father and the Klan. See https://www.theamericanconservative.com/a-darkness-revealed/

Like many of Dreher's posts, its only partly about his father, its also about 911, Rod's divorce, his family, his parents, his Hometown, Hungary, his dispute with a right-wing conservative, and many other things.

As with many Rod Dreher rambles, I read it with my mouth agape. But that's our Rod.

What other cultural/political pundit bares his soul and his family secrets like Rod? What other pundit would talk about how "Everyone in 3rd grade" obsessly stared at a 9 year old black boys "Primitive root wiener"? WHo else would revel that his father called him and his wife a "bunch of Weirdos"? Or discuss how he was bullied as teenager, 35 years go? Its so amazing in so many ways.

Waiting for the cries of RAYCISS! anent the restrictions on travelers from China . . .

Seeing all the stranded airline passengers makes me glad we never have to travel on holidays.

In local news, we're still under a boil order for drinking water, from an abundance of caution after a lot of main breaks and major pressure loss. By state law, less than certain psi requires boiling whether the water is bad or not.

I see that the US Military Academy has begun to remove statues and plaques of Robert E. Lee. I don’t know about you but I just feel so much better. I can hardly wait for all the peace, love and light to break out across the land and there to be an end to all the hate and divisiveness.

I was surprised not to see a post discussing Justice Gorsuch’s dissent in Arizona et. al. v Mayorkas. I am unhappy to say so, but I think he’s right.

Did you know that Jesus, Joseph, and Mary were refugees from the life-threatening actions of King Herod? Obviously, Texas Governor Greg Abbott was not aware of this either. According to the Book of Matthew:

Now after [the wise men visited the newborn Jesus and] had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

“A voice was heard in Ramah,
wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be consoled because they are no more.”

Abbott, of course, sent three buses full of refugees to the Naval Observatory and dropped off the thinly-clad border-crossers in 18 degree weather who were suddenly at death's door.

Now listen to the James Taylor song, "Home by Another Way" which tells the tale of the Maji avoiding King Herod after visiting Bethlehem.

Steer clear of royal welcomes
Avoid a big to-do
A king who would slaughter the innocents
Will not cut a deal for you
He really, really wants those presents
He’ll comb your camel’s fur
Until his boys announce
They’ve found trace amounts
Of your frankincense, gold and myrrh.

Apparently Gadfly is unaware that the illegal immigrants that the State of Texas is attempting to deal with are not refugees. Joseph did not flee to Egypt with his family to exploit Egypt’s welfare state. And it is recorded that they returned to their native country as soon as it was safe to do so.

gadfly...sing that little ditty to YOUR president who is shipping illegals all over America in the middle of the night and dropping them off. So funny, how the New York Times and the Washington Post fans don't know about THOSE drop offs which happen much more often than ANYTHING the Governor of Texas is sending up...since his border is overwhelmed and YOUR president and his handmaiden VP haven't done a damn thing. Suck it up honey...These illegals are here because YOUR president and his VP have NOT done their jobs. Sucker. By the way, it was 23 degrees in Texas where the illegals are crowding the streets because there is no shelter available due to YOUR president's lack of caring. He is in St Croix soaking up the sun, whilst the illegals are freezing.

@gadfly A couple points:

> It's a good thing that Joseph, Mary, and Jesus didn't try to flee to the liberal bastion of Martha's Vineyard.

> The aforementioned trio were trying to save their baby. Are you saying the 15 million illegals here were fleeing to save their babies from every country south of the border? Or for economic opportunity?

> Was Joseph smuggling fentanyl?

> When asked, the illegals implied President Soiled Pants gave them the green light to enter.

> As a compassionate lib gadfly, how many illegals are you housing in your residence? Surely you have a sofa/couch.

Food for thought from yesterday's post on the Democrats' efforts to harass Trump into jail, the nuthouse, or the grave -- anywhere but 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

---You know Althouse, you vote for these people. You support them with subscriptions.
And the person who is taking them on...you want to go away. [Curious George]

For today's Democrats, why not? Who cares about the Constitution, those worthless few pages of antiquated paper. Democrats keep working industriously to eliminate its law and protections on this and numerous other fronts. It's just another obstacle to their totalitarian fantasies; why treat it as anything special.

This was a great point from Curious George, IMO. It applies to Althouse and not only Althouse -- to so many people who think along the same lines and do the same things, for God-knows-what reason. Can't they put 2+2 together? Can't they see how determined the Democrats are to undo the foundation of the American nation, this great experiment that has succeeded beyond all imagination?

They can, sometimes, occasionally, case by case. So why don't they? Why does the larger picture seem to escape them? Is it just too much blind faith in their secular religion? What will it take to knock the scales from their eyes? A more direct attack than we are receiving already in the utility sabotage? A deeper financial emergency from our overspending? I wish I knew. Sucks to be at the mercy of venal power-mads like ... well, fill in almost any Democratic official's name. The Pelosis. The Bidens. The Clintons. The Sulzbergers too, useful idiots.

Compare those names to Eisenhower or Reagan. Two vastly different universes.

‘Extremely Irresponsible’: Expert Warns China’s Border Reopening Amid COVID Surge May Trigger Global Pandemic Resurgence

"A health expert has sharply criticized the Chinese regime’s lifting of international travel restrictions in the midst of a massive COVID wave sweeping through the country, saying the move is “extremely irresponsible” and could cause a global resurgence of the pandemic.

The National Health Commission announced on Dec. 26 that the country would end all quarantine requirements for inbound travelers from Jan. 8, 2023. Travelers will need to obtain a negative PCR test within 48 hours of departure, it said. Currently, travelers entering China need to undergo five days of mandatory quarantine in an approved facility, followed by three days at home.

The health body added that outbound tourism, which plummeted to almost nothing during the pandemic, will resume in an “orderly” fashion. It also removed the cap on the number of international flights to and from China.

The regime’s immigration administration said that passport applications for citizens intending to travel internationally will resume on Jan. 8.

Since these announcements, a top topic on Chinese social media has been “I can finally go abroad” after nearly three years of travel restrictions.

Data from travel sites show that Chinese residents are rushing to book overseas trips.

Chinese travel platform Tongcheng Travel released data on Dec. 27, showing that the number of searches for visas to go abroad increased by 10 times, and the search volume of international air tickets soared by 850 percent.

Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK were among the most searched destinations.

The border reopening comes as China is gripped in a surge of COVID, which by the regime’s own estimates infected 248 million people in the first 20 days of December. Analysis by UK researchers also projected 167 and 279 million cases nationwide, which could lead to between 1.3 and 2.1 million deaths.
"

Gosh, what could go wrong?

Rod Dreher always seems to go on forever, like he owns an ink company, or like he gets paid by the word, or like his readers are his therapy group. Then he would squat on the comments section and fire back at critics, like he had nothing better to do. I try to avoid him if I can.

Mention of Noah Rothman took me to Ology.com, a site he worked for once. I don't know what it was then, but it looks like it's now a collection of tweets from Senators and Representatives. It's a very revealing look into what the governing class thinks (or what they want us to think they think). Democrats boasting about how much of the money we don't actually have they are spending. Republicans with the occasional culture war foray. Much sympathy for Jamie Raskin. He has lymphoma, so I guess he is beyond criticism now. John Cornyn reminds us that Texas became a state on this day in 1845.

And Democrats and Never Trumpers continue to defend it.

Joe Biden jet setting off to St. Croix for his weekly vacation instead of staying in DC for one extra day to sign the omnibus bill, causing it to now have to be flown by private jet to the Caribbean, is the perfect description of our government. It gets no better than that.

As a white Southerner, a bit older than Dreher, I gave his apologia a look--his upbringing had a few parallels and overlaps with my own. In my case any klanfoolery would have been found on my mother's side, but they were mostly run-of-the-mill unaffiliated racist Methodists, not much inclined to activism good or bad. (Of course both my parent's families employed Black people as domestics or "yardboys" at various times.)

Anyway, the article was too long and full of abstractions; I baled when he started in on Freemasons.

Wow - not a single refugee among the 250,000 Cubans who crossed to Mexico last year to enter the U.S. because of a continuing severe food crisis just 90 miles south of Florida. Could that be because it is politically impossible to help deter the Communist regime that has kept Cubans starved and poor, all the while operating a brutal police state that murders or throws protesters into prison? In 2021 the Cuban sugar crop was but 800,000 tonnes compared to 8 million tonnes in 1989.

Not my problem, sayeth the King of Texas. Let them die - I'll even help. Communism is always central planning failures that the population has to endure. Joseph left Bethlehem in order to live but so did some of the 250,000 Cubans last year.
