"Under the new Wollumbin Aboriginal Place Management Plan, the whole of the mountain is considered a 'men’s site.'..."

"'Wollumbin is interconnected to a broader cultural and spiritual landscape that includes Creation, Dreaming stories and men’s initiation rites of deep antiquity,' the group said.... However, local Ngarakbal Githabul women have said placing male-only gender restrictions on the site, as proposed in the plan, would 'dispossess' Indigenous women with deep spiritual connections to the area. Stella Wheildon, a north coast Indigenous woman, told The Daily Telegraph that the contested area also contained scared female sites. She said she had conducted extensive research on the history of Indigenous Australians in the region and found that the Yoocum Yoocum ancestors, and the Ngarakbal Githabul people were originally from the area in question. 'The Wollumbin Consultative Group has discriminated against the women and our lores,' Ms. Wheildon said...."

If they're upset now, wait'll Becky finds out how much work aboriginal women did for their tribe in every pre age-of-discovery Neolithic society around the world.

I'll hand it to aboriginal men the world over, how they managed to hunt, fish, and have sex all day while the women did everything else is a masterclass. I kneel.

Upset by the way women are being treated in this management plan?

The wonderful thing about oral faith traditions is the way they combine a really inherently sketchy and necessarily self-serving body of “evidence” with the non-negotiable existential claims of religion.

Throw in some material prizes to be won or lost, and you’ve got yourself a bloody intractable mess.

In this case, we get the additional cross-cut of sexism.

So they set aside a natural area and declare it a place of sacred celebration of cultural Aboriginal men's traditional initiation rites, and the women get all heated up about misogyny for being excluded, just like Aboriginal women were, traditionally.

Ah well you can chuckle at (or applaud) the Australian kerfuffle. But here in the States you'll find that enviromental regulations and environmental regulations will often halt proposed consruction which might interfere with some indigenous peoples "sacred" sites.

Of course there are no sacred sites on any Indian reservation where a casino might be built.

Critter म्हणाले...

All of this is based on a false belief that there a point in time in the past where society had no predecessors. There was no beginning of society. Even the first branches of Homo sapiens had predecessor societies. Determining which era of history has a perpetual claim on land is a fool’s errand.

Just because a old policy has the title "indigenous" applied to it doesn't mean that it needs to be followed today. There are many ancient indigenous policies that are immoral and illegal in modern society. You can respect the history of the policy, but it shouldn't be followed today if it is obviously unfair. After all, you wouldn't argue that the Germans should be able to persecute Jewish people today because it was a part of their culture in the 1930s and 1940s or that whites in the American South should be able to own slaves because it was a part of their culture before 1865.

Critter @ 10:37: “… Determining which era of history has a perpetual claim on land is a fool’s errand.”

The trick is to get your tribe’s origin myth up on the board before others do. The origin myth goes back to the beginning of all things, so nobody else can gain priority. If they try, your shaman will simply “remember”additional elements of the story that contradict or explain away a competing claim.

It’s a nice business, especially when the white colonialists can be browbeaten into writing some fat checks.

If a group of common descendants want to get together and use the old rules to feel proud of themselves and overcome some of the bad behavior they went into from British culture I am all for it.

The Japanese go to shrines, I go to civil war battlefields. I don’t care if they make a man mountain. Let the women understand how these native men feel for a change. And give them a woman mountain place too, if that’s where it’s at for them.

A common complaint of men is that women want to keep them off the lake or the golf course, they find it hard to leave you alone, it could just be me though.

"Some North American tribes have been trying to ban academic menstruating women from handling old skeletal Indian/NA remains."

I coordinated federally funded highway projects in Alabama with tribes that claimed a connection. When human remains were found, some tribes allowed male and female to enter. Some restricted women of child bearing years. Some would forbid any women to enter the area. But at least none seemed to care what the others allowed.

A bit of background: we are talking about Mount Warning, named by Captain Cook for dangerous offshore reefs. It is a volcano, extinct, a fairly easy climb. People ignore the closed gate and head on up. This is a local power play between black activists and lefty politicians.
Mount Warning is the first place on the Australian continent to get the morning sun. Try to be there at dawn , some climb in the dark, some camp overnight. Well worth it.
