Flu and colds are back with a vengeance — why now?

"Restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 markedly blunted the spread of other respiratory illnesses. Influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) — a seasonal virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms, but that can be dangerous for young children and older adults — all but disappeared in 2020 and early 2021. Now, in the Northern Hemisphere, RSV is surging, and the hospitalization rate for flu in the United States is higher for this time of year than it has been since 2010. Why exactly are these surges happening now? And what’s in store for future winters?

“These viruses are coming back, and they’re coming back with a vengeance,” says Scott Hensley, an immunologist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. “It is possible that this year will be sort of the granddaddy of them all in terms of flu.”

Hensley says that this is because the population “is more immunologically naive than what we would expect in most years”. Normally, children get infected by their second birthday. Now, “you’re going to end up having kids that are three, four years of age right now who have never seen RSV”.

For older children and adults who have been previously infected, the problem is waning immunity. In the absence of exposure to a virus, antibody levels decline. In a typical year, “we might get exposed to a small bit of virus and your body fights it off”, says John Tregoning, an immunologist at Imperial College London. But “that kind of asymptomatic boosting maybe hasn’t happened in the last few years”.

I just found out that my hippie girlfriend (not really a girl, late 30's) voted straight Republican Tuesday. She's a dyed in the wool hippie, loves Obama. We don't usually talk politics because what would be the benefit? I commented on how long it was taking to count the votes here in Arizona and she replied "that means the republicans won and the Dem's are figuring out how many votes to create" I was gobsmacked.

Even more surprising was the revelation that one of our housekeepers also voted Republican. This woman is almost comically hippie in her lifestyle and looks.

I'm not relating this in aid of any particular point. I just thought it was quite interesting.

Awe, and then some.

Someone quoted Horacio [sic] Nelson, "Publish, and be damned." I think that was Wellington to a paramour. Nelson was a straight-arrow until he went gaga for Lady Hamilton, but Wellington cut a swathe, as they say, and had much longer to do so.

The Russian forces in and around Kherson City and in Kherson on the right bank of the Dnipro are now attempting to cross the Dnipro which is very deep and wide throughout Kherson region. Their commanding general has ordered a retreat. There are rumors that it is going very, very badly for the Russians. It's said that there are 40,000 Russian soldiers trying to cross while the Armed Forces of the Ukraine are racing forward to bomb the boats and improvised bridges. It's rumored that it's a "Dunkirk" as Dunkirk might have been without the evacuation fleet that came from Britain for the English Army. The Ukrainians might round up an army before we finish counting the results of the mid-term elections

Dementia Don

Dude, you are an insult child. You just lost all the families of people with dementia! Anybody who has old parents, now they hate your ass.

I did this already. I forgot my insult, but it was good.

Can I just say, even though the Althouse blog is an excellent writer workshop resource, it's like she's not organizing it for me at all! Have you noticed that? The damn tags don't help me. I have to rely on motherfucking Blogger to find my shit on her blog.

Possible tag: Not my dream

Meanwhile, while I am bitching about this, it just now occurred to me that Laslo has been tagging his shit for years! "Call me Laslo" or whatever the fuck he says. Blogger's like, "Here's all your Laslo posts from the Althouse blog." Motherfucker! Everybody's better organized than I am.

What the hell did I say? Captain Obvious? No. Something with playing cards. It was a fucking fine insult. It will come to me. I might sue your ass for my dementia, Begley, I can't remember shit now.

Some kind of Prince, he's a prince. Clown Prince! No tag for that, right? That's how you know Althouse still loves Trump.

One time Althouse put one of my mad cussing posts on the front page and I was like, "Shit! I'm in the spotlight!"

We all like to be on the front page, of course. I think I got on the front page a couple of times. It was an honor! Except for that time I was workshopping shit backstage, "fuck this" and "fuck that." Oops!

I'm workshopping my X-rated stuff backstage, and she's all lifting the curtain on my ass. That's off the Saint Croix brand, damn it! If I ruthlessly protected my brand name. Which I don't do. I'm too lazy, that's my problem. I'm all, "Holy Spirit, please remove all my dumb and evil shit off the Althouse blog."

Christians are like, "Why don't you not curse in public, then you won't be embarrassed when we run the video." Well, why don't you quit being reasonable and nice!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure my review tapes will be funny, and everybody will be laughing. And I'll be like, "I was aiming for joy with that one, sorry about the language." And the angels will be like, "Run the video of him stomping the cockroaches."

Man!

That's one way to think about life. Maybe you are the star of your own movie. And everybody else is a co-star or a bit player. Are you a hero in your movie? Or are you a villain? (Or a comedian?)

Carried forward from an earlier thread…

I'm using BC and AD because I'm not Jewish, and because its been the standard usage in the USA since 1609 AND in western civilization for 2000 years. Why should I have to "Defer" to jews or muslims? Why did they come to a majority Christian country if they didn't want to abide by established cultural beliefs and norms? They don't use AD or BC in Israel or Iraq. If I moved there, should they have to change to defer to Christians and Europeans?

I prefer A.D. and B.C. myself — and use them. It's worth noting in this regard, however, that “Christian countries” in general have not used the AD/BC convention universally (or “cosmically”), not even since the convention was invented (in the 500's A.D.), much less “for 2000 years.”

Indeed, throughout the Middle Ages (which are judged to have begun about 500 A.D.) and beyond, the medieval Roman Empire (often termed by historians the “Byzantine” or “Eastern Roman” Empire, but actually it was just the… Roman Empire) made little use of the western AD/BC dating convention, even after it was invented.

Instead, the Christian Roman Empire of the Middle Ages (and thus its modern religious descendants: the Greek Orthodox, various Slavic Orthodox, and other “Eastern Orthodox” Christian traditions, have traditionally) dated things according to the “Year of the World” (or “… of the Cosmos”) — labeled A.M. or Annus Mundi.

To the medieval Romans — speaking (mainly) Greek — it was Etos Kosmou or the Year of the Cosmos, symbolized ε.Κ. A.M./ε.Κ. (a.k.a. the Byzantine calendar) was also the official calendar in Kievan Rus and Russia from 988 A.D. to 1700. The calendar made it's way all the way to Ireland! Moreover, the (Ecumenical Patriarchate: that is, the Constantinopolitan) Orthodox Church employed the calendar officially as late as 1728 A.D. — and it's still in use today in Eastern churches.

A year A.M. (or ε.Κ.) is based on the count of (Julian calendar) years since the “creation of the universe,” according to the Jewish Septuagint Biblical tradition (which differs by more than 1,700 years from the modern Jewish date for creation) — occurring, according to the Annus Mundi tradition, on September 1, 5509 B.C. (in the Julian proleptic calendar).

As a result, it's now (since we're now beyond September 1 [Julian calendar], i.e., New Year's Day, for this year): 7,531 A.M.

Now that midterms are over, and a success…

NewsCorp, which is Fox, the Wall Street Journal, and the no longer great New York Post (bring back Col!), is all in for Governor Ron DeSanctimonious, an average REPUBLICAN Governor with great Public Relations, who didn’t have to close up his State, but did, unlike other Republican Governors, whose overall numbers for a Republican, were just average—middle of the pack—including COVID, and who has the advantage of SUNSHINE, where people from badly run States up North would go no matter who the Governor was, just like I did!

Ron came to me in desperate shape in 2017—he was politically dead, losing in a landslide to a very good Agriculture Commissioner, Adam Putnam, who was loaded up with cash and great poll numbers. Ron had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse him, he could win. I didn’t know Adam so I said, “Let’s give it a shot, Ron.” When I Endorsed him, it was as though, to use a bad term, a nuclear weapon went off. Years later, they were the exact words that Adam Putnam used in describing Ron’s Endorsement. He said, “I went from having it made, with no competition, to immediately getting absolutely clobbered after your Endorsement.” I then got Ron by the “Star” of the Democrat Party, Andrew Gillum (who was later revealed to be a “Crack Head”), by having two massive Rallies with tens of thousands of people at each one I also fixed his campaign, which had completely fallen apart. I was all in for Ron, and he beat Gillum, but after the Race, when votes were being stolen by the corrupt Election process in Broward County, and Ron was going down ten thousand votes a day, along with now-Senator Rick Scott, I sent in the FBI and the U.S. Attorneys, and the ballot theft immediately ended, just prior to them running out of the votes necessary to win. I stopped his Election from being stolen.

And now, Ron DeSanctimonious is playing games! The Fake News asks him if he’s going to run if President Trump runs, and he says, “I’m only focused on the Governor’s race, I’m not looking into the future.” Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that’s really not the right answer…

This is just like 2015 and 2016, a Media Assault (Collusion!), when Fox News fought me to the end until I won, and then they couldn’t have been nicer or more supportive. The Wall Street Journal loved Low Energy Jeb Bush, and a succession of other people as they rapidly disappeared from sight, finally falling in line with me after I easily knocked them out, one by one. We’re in exactly the same position now. They will keep coming after us, MAGA, but ultimately, we will win. Put America First and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

I don't know who is advising Trump, or if anyone is, but he needs to chill the fuck out for a few months. I was a supporter of his first term, and voted for his second, and could support him for a belated second, but I think 2020 broke his brain. He needs to shut his mouth about everything before the GA runoff, including his candidacy announcement, and he needs to shut his mouth about DeSantis and any other potential primary opponents until they actually become primary opponents. You're on thin ice, Donald, take the skates off for a bit.

“Not just initiated by a shotgun pleading, this was a shotgun lawsuit,” the judge [U.S. District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks] opined. “Thirty-one individuals and organizations were summoned to court, forced to hire lawyers to defend against frivolous claims. The only common thread against them was Mr. Trump’s animus.”

Donald Trump's lawyers paid fines, but Trump paid nothing for initiating his RICO lawsuit.

The Elephant Man makes me cry. What a hero that guy was.

I love David Lynch's movie. That's Lynch's best work, in my opinion. I like his creepy work, too, but his Christian movie is outstanding.

Ripper Street is a great BBC show about the cops in London at the turn of the century, around 1900 I think. Anyway, season two of Ripper Street has Joseph Merrick ("the elephant man") in it. He reads the Bible all the time and he's a powerful Christian. Doesn't surprise me one iota. I didn't get that Lynch's movie had a spiritual component until I saw that episode. The cops were totally respectful of him and called him Mr. Merrick. He had become a full citizen. And then he was murdered. (Great show, the acting in Ripper Street is phenomenal).

Count your blessings and always be happy.

I'd like to welcome back all of my friends in the loyal opposition whom have freed themselves from Team Trump. As can be seen in the comments, his only supporters left are either insane, suffer from manic depression, have severe PTSD or are pathologically insecure.

Have no shame about your former loyalties. I totally get it. Our political class are rapacious greedy backstabbing power hungry yada yada yada. I too had hoped he would truly drain the swamp and cut through the bullshit. I admit he did do some things right.

Now if the Dims can only jettison the Uberwokendumkoffs we can once again disagree and fight while maintaining our sanity and humanity.

This doesn't mean I'll stop trolling🤪.

Ann Coulter was to speak at her alma mater Cornell on Wednesday evening. As usual she was heckled and shouted down. Coulter left after 30 minutes, speaking for a mere 7 minutes. University security removed the offenders, but as soon as one was removed, another popped up.

Per the university, the offending students will be subject to the student conduct code <<<<< makes me laugh. Expulsion? Probably not.

I have said this repeatedly: Once "hate" speech became part of our vernacular, free speech in this country became toast.

I have become a fan of radio guy Jesse Kelly. He has stated more than once that unless the swamp is drained, the next guy will be far worse than Trump.

Before we bury Trump, it might be well to reflect on the fact that Republicans got 6 million more votes than Democrats in the recent election.

tim in vermont said...

The other thing is that 58% of Fetterman's votes were mail-in; that's machine politics and a bought and paid for Senate seat.

tim in vermont said...

Not to mention also that it was well known that R's show up day of the election, and totally foreseeable and easily preventable (provide enough paper) "technical difficulties" in the most populous county suppressed a lot of same day votes.

Same kind of thing happened in Maricopa County. Wrong settings on the printers, as if they never tested it. More same-day voter suppression.
