November 16, 2022

In a 10-year period, Trump will have been running for President in 7 of the years, and in 2 of the "off" years, he was actually President.

That means we will only have had ONE year in a 10-year period when Trump was neither President nor running for President.

And not even that, because Trump was President for the first 20 days of 2021. We've got Trump — presidential candidate or President — in 10 consecutive years.

That's too much Trump! And we are only in Year 8 of the 10 years, and if he wins reelection, there will be 4 MORE YEARS of Trump after that, making it a total of 14 years, with only one year in which Trump was neither President nor running for President! 15 if you count the first 20 days of 2029.

If he'd won in 2020, there would only be 2 more years after this year. But with him running for President, the Trump era could go on for 6 more years after this year — 7 if you count 2029.

And it's not as if the little Biden era has been a relief. Biden's been awful, and the effort to suppress Trump perversely kept him in the center of our nation's feeble emotional life.

Here's the time line:

2015 — Trump became a candidate for President on June 16

2016 — Trump campaigned and won

2017 — The first year of the Trump presidency

2018 — The second year of the Trump presidency

2019 — The third year of the Trump presidency, reelection bid began in June

2020 — The fourth year of the Trump presidency and the campaign for reelection

2021 — 20 days of presidency, riot/insurrection on January 6th, impeachment and trial in February

2022 — Trump becomes a candidate for President on November 15

2023 — presumably, Trump will campaign

2024 — presumably, Trump will campaign, and he may win

2025 — Trump might become President again

2026 —Trump might be President

2027 —Trump might be President

2028 —Trump might be President

2029 —If Trump becomes President and stays in office, we will finally be down to the last 20 days of the last year in which Trump will have been either a candidate or President. It will have been a very weird 15 years, and, of course, we'll be quite different when the time comes, but I don't believe there will be any sort of mechanism that will permit Trump to go on past 2029. We still won't have a coup, and we're not going to repeal the 22nd Amendment. He can't even do the Bill Clinton thing and have his wife run for President, because Melania is not a natural born citizen.

Now do Biden, who's been running for president for ... I don't know how many decades before he succeeded. Isn't this just the nature of political life?

I also have Trump fatigue. However, it's not anything unusual. What did it feel like to support Adlai Stevenson?

And all of this is brought to you by Democrats. The real question is why cant Democrats just leave it alone?

tim maguire said...

That’s a facile objection. As with so many criticisms of Trump, it’s specially created to be weaponized against Trump. Most politicians are in campaign mode most of the time. Most presidents run multiple times. The only thing unique about Trump (and even this isn’t really unique, it’s just rare) is that he is continuing to run for president after losing reelection.

Ann Althouse said...

No one has held the center stage like this — especially with all this opposition — getting impeached twice, getting voted out and then coming back.

Others, including Biden, have run repeatedly.

What iowantwo said. Trump is an addiction, apparently without a cure. He presents an easy, accessible target, which I'm guessing is a huuuuge revenue generator for all manner of media.

The “effort to suppress” Trump started in 2016, possibly 2015. He threatens the Great Reset and globalists everywhere. That’s what is at the root of the angst, I think. If he were on board with the globalist agenda, there’d be no combat from the DOJ nor the media. So yes it’s exhausting that this is still going on, and he can be quite childish, but the reason for the fight is his desire to divest the US from that globalist crap. That’s good, no?

Biden goes along with all that crap, and promotes it via climate laws, etc., so no suppression needed there. He’s actually protected from investigations regarding his family corruption, which is just fine by him.

What about Biden fatigue? I have plenty of that. Biden is slow walking us into WW3, but Trump had enemies in the intelligence community (God bless him) and the press (God bless him) and wrote mean tweets about the people attacking him.

How many million more votes did Republicans get than Democrats in this past election? We only lost the Senate due to strategic targeting by Democrats of the votes they did get, which can be countered, oh yeah, and voter suppression in AZ and PA. If you guys want to throw away the working class support that comes with Trump, you can do it without me.

tim maguire said...

I have Trump fatigue too. I don’t want him to run; if he runs I don’t want him to get the nomination. But this is the sort of cheap-shot criticism that causes me to look forward to voting for him. And since the shock of last Tuesday wore off, there’s been a growing level of cheap-shot criticism in the commentariat.

The Clintons first appeared on the scene in Arkansas in 1979, and Bill was elected president in 1992.

It's just fascinating to me that this past election, in which we took the House, can be painted as a loss for Trump. It's a loss for Republican leadership which has been unable to adjust to the realities of modern elections. The House is much more difficult to rig, given that so many of the districts contain no Democrat run large cities.

California Republicans have adjusted and have managed to survive, imagine those efforts made in AZ and PA. This is a very winnable race coming up, and the reason is that Donald Trump brings black and hispanic and white working class votes into the Republican fold, votes that the Democrats took for granted.

The FBI now admits that the Mar a Lago raid was unjustified, the FBI seized all of the computers and phones of Trump's impeachment lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and guess what? Found nothing incriminating. We are just supposed to let the FBI pick our president?

Already gas prices are going up, and it's going to get a lot worse. Biden drained our strategic petroleum reserve to keep Democrats in power after the mid terms. He has played that card now. Even Bloomberg has written the story that Trump tried to top off the SPR at $24 a barrel and Democrats stopped him.

This is one big psy-op going on to finally finish off Trump. You shouldn't fall for it, you should ask yourself why they are doing it.

Whose fault is that? Trump’s?

If he weren’t a good president, I wouldn’t get caught up in the unfairness of your take. I’d just nod my head and hope he hears you. But he was a good president. The entire world was better off for his leadership. Many millions of people led better lives because of Donald Trump.

Let’s not throw that away so carelessly.

This is what William A. Jacobson of Legal Insurrection says about the idea that DeSantis has already been bought off:

William A. Jacobson | November 12, 2022 at 10:00 am
Sad to see that some readers are going down the rabbit hole pushed by conspiracy websites and pundits whose main interest is in stoking traffic and self-importance. A sentence from an op-ed by one billionaire is used to weave a fictional elaborate web of control over DeSantis. Where did the $100 million Trump has in the campaign bank come from? Certainly not himself, he never spends his own money. And he spent very little of that $100 million political bankroll to back candidates he endorsed.

And if having billionaire and finance industry backers makes a candidate “GOPe” and in the pocket of the funders, why doesn’t that apply to Trump, who had a long list of billionaires backing him in 2020, including many from finance. https://www.forbes.com/sites/michelatindera/2021/02/19/here-are-the-billionaires-who-donated-to-donald-trumps-2020-presidential-campaign/?sh=5e1d602e4667

(added) it is possible to be against DeSantis, to think Trump would be the better candidate, or to simply say you like Trump more, without buying into the insane conspiracy theories being spread.

And this notion that DeSantis “owes” Trump not to run because Trump helped him reverses historical reality. DeSantis backed Trump long before Trump backed DeSantis. In 2016, when there was an effort to mount a convention floor fight against Trump, DeSantis urged the party to unite behind Trump. That was years before Trump helped DeSantis in the 2018 Governor’s race – by that logic, Trump owes DeSantis, not the other way around https://floridapolitics.com/archives/208720-ron-desantis-calls-gop-unite-behind-ticket/

As we documented in multiple posts, prior to the midterms the media narrative was that DeSantis was “worse than Trump” and equally if not more MAGA, Now, as Fuzzy documents, they are trying to manipulate people by claiming DeSantis is NeverTrump and an establishment stooge. Interesting how the media narrative lines up perfectly with the anti-DeSantis conspiracy narrative.

I think this has it right: “DeSantis went after Disney. He took on the trans agenda. He shipped illegals to Martha’s Vineyard. He defied Fauci. If you think he’s establishment then you truly have absolutely no idea what the establishment is, how it operates, or what it wants. You are just clueless.” https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1591137651264196608

We are not advocating DeSantis or any particlar candidate. Let them fight it out in the primaries. But sabotaging the 2022 midterms by launching a tirade in the 72 hour runup and damaging the upcoming Georgia runoff effort by making it all about you (if Trump announces next week), needs to be called out. We’ve seen this movie before when Trump sabotaged the Jan 5, 2021 Georgia runoffs which cost us two Senate seats and enabled the Biden agenda to pass 50-50 plus VP.

Go down the rabbit hole, it’s your right as Americans. But we’re not going to enable it.

Sure Althouse. Too much Trump. Just like great grandpa used to say about Roosevelt.

However, it could be that your consumption of news sources absolutely obsessed with Trump have done the damage Big Media intended, a seven-year psy-op to poison the well. I remain open minded about the future because there’s always another surprise waiting to rattle us. It might be too much Trump. OTOH I know adults who have no interest in politics or even news and they have sat out every election except when Trump ran. That’s the weird thing that makes elections in America difficult to predict: the participation rate is so low that a sudden surge of non-participants throws all expectations out as happened in Trump’s ‘16 run and (amazingly) just this cycle with huge numbers of Gen Z suddenly voting because they saw something in Fetterman. We can expect more of this as the parties (well at least one side) continue to mine the huge vein of non-participants out there and all around.

Almost none of us wanted or even imagined Trump as president prior to 2015. And the only certainty is more uncertainty between now and ’24.

I'm not going to let the Democrats and their media allies and the squishy GOPe losers and the Deep State choose my candidate for me. We have three known fighters who have won before (in alpha order): Abbot, DeSantis and Trump. If one of those three runs and is nominated we will have a chance to win.

Y'all who want anybody but Trump have to deal with the same election issues that dogged us in the midterms, and have a ballot-harvesting/curing strategy to win. There's new rules. All three dudes above have demonstrated an ability to adapt and take the fight to the Democrats. Your taste may differ. That's fine for you.

Here are some WaPo quotes -- sorry, too lazy to link, but you can drop a few words back into google and find it. The bottom line is that the government is walking back its crazier leaks and bailing on the idea there was criminal intent, which is a predicate for prosecution:

"Federal agents believe former president Donald Trump’s motive for allegedly keeping classified documents was largely his ego and a desire to hold on to the materials as trophies or mementos, according to people familiar with the matter. . .

"That review has not found any apparent business advantage to the types of classified information in Trump’s possession, these people said. FBI interviews with witnesses so far, they said, also do not point to any nefarious effort by Trump to leverage, sell or use the government secrets. Instead, the former president seemed motivated by a more basic desire not to give up what he believed was his property, these people said.

"The people familiar with the matter cautioned that the investigation is ongoing, that no final determinations have been made, and that it is possible additional information could emerge that changes investigators’ understanding of Trump’s motivations. But they said the evidence collected over a period of months indicates the primary explanation for potentially criminal conduct was Trump’s ego and intransigence.
