We will learn more soon, as they've got a person in custody. I think the Times ought to refer to him as "the alleged assailant," not "the assailant." We don't know for certain what happened. I am going to call bullshit on the "break in" part. I am guessing this individual was likely to have been invited in at some point. I think it 50% that Temujin is actually right about what happened. For me, the tell is the lack of information about the assailant.
Why do I think the person was let in? Cornell Law School's WEX service defines the "breaking" part very liberally:
Breaking and entering is defined as the entering of a building through force without authorization. The slightest force including pushing open a door is all that is necessary. Breaking also includes entering a building through fraud, threats, or collusion.
If you're not authorized to enter, you can't enter without also "breaking," unless someone left the door open. So that charge doesn't exclude it being a person well known to Mr. Pelosi.

I think it is telling about the state of the USA today that our host assumes that "wealthy people should have security". But then this was the Pelosi's second (nominal) residence. I believe they actually spend most of their time at their home or homes in the Napa Valley. So if you do have security--but have to cut back in these inflationary times--maybe the security in San Francisco has to go.

This happened about 2:30am PDT. As J Scott notes above, the "suspect" in custody has no physical description after 8 hours. I'm starting to see a few places in the past hour report the suspect as "male"; although I don't know if they consulted a biologist. Either they are stringing this out for all the coverage they can get, or the motivation for the attack is known and has nothing to do with Lawrence Tribe's fantasies.

San Francisco probably ten years ago was the only time I saw someone walking around nude in public, outside of a nude beach. A young man who looked to be waiting for a bus near the Safeway in the Mission District. I wondered if the bus driver would let him on.

We're finding out that conspiracy theories are often true. This is a reminder, though, that nuttier conspiracy theories get taken up by people who are already unstable. Anybody who hears voices telling him what to do isn't reliably rightwing or leftwing, but if the early accounts are right the assailant does seem to have picked up a lot of ideas on the internet about Communists and feminists and pedophiles in government. So, yes, there may be more involved in this than we now know, but this will be used by the regime to crack down, and if what's come out is true, it does cut a little too close to some on the internet.
