"Kimmel playing dead on the ground right next to a black woman accepting her rightful place in the future of tv is such a stinging metaphor."

Somebody tweeted, quoted in "Emmys: Jimmy Kimmel Lying Onstage During Quinta Brunson’s Speech Spurs Backlash/The late-night host pretended to be passed out throughout the 'Abbott Elementary' star's big moment, which a number of social media users found disrespectful" (Hollywood Reporter).

Are you following the latest awards-show racial brouhaha? Apparently, Jimmy Kimmel committed to a comic routine — that he would fake being dead drunk and pulled onto the stage by his foot and then, at the end of the presentation and thank-you speech, dragged off — and the award was won by a black woman. So he lay there at her feet while she had her moment, and that was deemed disrespectful by people who were looking for something to talk about.

It's hard to do comedy when earnest honoring is the order of the day. But it was an award for best writing in a comedy series — so the subject was comedy. Yet, because a black person was honored, we're told (by some people), comedy was inappropriate. Is that what black people involved in comedy want for themselves? Jimmy Kimmel had himself dragged across the floor. He abased himself utterly. And still, it's not enough. It's wrong. He'll have to apologize now, according to the norms of the Era of That's Not Funny.

Oh? The Emmys were on last night?

I'd say it's example number 21,357 that none of those late night specialists in generating political clapter knows how to be funny.

Jimmy Kimmel isn't funny. He's a cuck. A pawn. His arrogance is the antithesis of comedy.

I didn't even know the Emmy's were on. Even if I knew, I wouldn't have tuned in.

In the past when movies and TV were good, and a common experience, the actors kept their mouths more shut about politics, it was somewhat entertaining. Now it's just a puke fest.

They should have Ricky Gervais back every year. Or have some balls and get Chapelle or Bill Burr. Hollywood can't take a joke, and everything has to be woke...which is why the pump out now sucks.

so the subject was comedy

THAT'S NOT FUNNY!

Nobody tell black actors that China is planning to digitally whitewash the new live action Little Mermaid with a ginger.

I would say we're moving into a new era of comedy.

The left thinks nothing is funny.

The right thinks everything is hilarious.

We're clearly a nation watching two different movies: One is a Michael Moore-directed documentary. The other is a Mel Brooks-directed farce.

The Emmy's Fallon DrunkFall with its accompanying Twitter hate pile-on-reaction is sending forward into the future a perfect 2022 moment, peak zany if you will, for later times to make jokes about.

Well, there is that: Jimmy Kimmel isn't funny, so he's the perfect poster boy for the era of That's Not Funny!

Where's George Carlin when you need him to show the way? "Comedy" has gone to s**t.

Jimmy Kimmel is a white supremacist. Clearly.

Why is it all the Late Nite hosts are white men? Colbert, Kimmel, even some gay guy nobody heard of that they had to ship in from England.

The joke was met with laughter.... until (gasp) a black person won.

Please 'splain how it went from funny to unfunny. Is it slavery? I'll bet it was slavery.

"a number of social media users"

Well, that settles it. All of America is outraged...not.

Isn't the backlash just audience participation in the comedy routine?

Quinta Brunson may get the last laugh: “Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him,” she joked to members of the press backstage. “I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face. I don’t know what happens.”

So the Emmys came and went?

If I'd known they were last night I would have made a special point of not watching. Appointment non-viewing.

He would have to. If it was actually funny ...

Thank you for reiterating that there is nothing in that broadcast for me: I don’t watch their shows or know their names except for the repeat offenders like Kimmel who never paid any price for doing blackface on TV. Without Carrola to do the actual comedy Kimmel flails, this time literally so. He wouldn’t know how to get a laugh without his predilection for stupid antics.

mezzrow said...

The only way he could satisfy what they seek would be to go away and give his job to her, or someone else of their choosing. A lot of people who comment here would probably not have a problem with Kimmel's exit from the public scene. He could work on his bass clarinet playing, and spend more time with his family.

Maybe he could get his soul back. Anything's possible.

What IS funny is that there was an Emmy Award show on last night. Who knew? Who cared? What were the ratings? Did anybody see the supposed insult?

If a bad comedian makes a bad faux pas and no one sees it, does it still resonate?
If a Black person doesn't get adequate (and what has become requisite) praise, applause, and deference, is it an insult?

Ted Danson showed up in blackface at a Friars Club roast of Whoopi Goldberg. His jokes included racial epithets. His performance bombed. This episode is remembered as the "dumbest thing" Ted Danson has ever done. But what if Mr. Danson was attempting to transcend political correctness? Was this external display of prejudice courageous?

Unless Ricky is hosting, I no watch. Jimmy Kimmel was okay making fun of Howie and Terry on Fox Sunday NFL pregame.

Good bit, but wrong venue. Meghan Markle was not amused. I'd like to see King Charles pull something like that at the Queen's funeral. Justin Trudeau has better comic timing and the bit would funnier if he did it in blackface, but the Queen's funeral should be all about King Charles. A bit like that would humanize him and allow people to relate to him.

If you're referring to James Corden, he's straight. Married with three kids.

Yeah, I was surprised too.

When there is insufficient laughter, technicians supply laugh track. Seems to be three or four different laugh tracks to choose from. Should be awards to techs for volume, selection, length and timing.

If I did the link correctly, you can find the same laugh tracks here. Free laugh tracks

Might be fun to use a couple next time Bob Jones in India calls to help me fix an erroneous credit card charge.

I saw the bit and thought it was pretty amusing. However, I don't understand why the people behind these once prestigious awards are striving so hard to make a joke out of them. They're damaging their own brand. It's no wonder the ratings for these events have collapsed in recent years. During that time, the hosts, producers, and writers seem to have collectively decided that the way to make the shows more relevant and modern is to basically present the whole event ironically. They're basically making fun of the idea that anyone's taking it seriously. Most of the humor revolves around how phony and shallow everyone in the room is, how jealous and spiteful all the non-winners and non-nominees are, and how boring and predictable the show itself is. That can be good for a few cheap laughs, but the message it sends to the audience over time is very bad.

Whoopi defended his actions so the caravan rolled on.

Apparently she is the arbiter of good blackface vs. not-so-good.

What makes a comedian funny is their instant timing and wit. Johnny Carson reacting to his guests. Chris Rock reacting to the slap. Kimmel missed a potentially brilliant moment. If we must shame him, let it be for his failure as a comedian. It genuinely wasn't funny.

if the winner was white, they'd complain about that. the left just wants black folks to be treated differently. if only there was a word for that.

Ted Danson was dating Whoopie and went there WITH her. She laughed and laughed, until now, when everything is RACIST, and she is offended. Jimmy Kimmel dressed in black face a couple of times on his show. Joy Behar dressed in black face. They are they hypocrites of today that are crying RACISM about everything they did themselves.

Just reading about this and looking at the photos I have a hard time understanding what was supposed to be funny about Kimmel - who is an A1 asshole- lying on the Emmy stage. I am sure there must have been more to it than one can get after the fact, but I certainly would not have blamed the award winner - for whom this was a big moment - fro putting her 4 inch heels through Kimmel's eye sockets. This just reinforces what we already know: that most people in show business have never grown up.

Krumhorn said...

The show had a record low in viewers down 20% from last year on CBS (Sunday) and down double digits from the last NBC broadcasts. Sunday to Monday comparisons are tough and the last Monday night broadcast was 2018 on NBC. Even so, fewer and fewer folks give a crap about awards shows which have become platforms for dopey show biz folks who think they have some special insight with their oh-so strongly felt political views.

And now the celebration and promotion of diversity has become retch-inducing. While I no longer watch the Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel is an established tv star. If he wants to do a stunt while some woman of color nobody has ever heard of who writes for a show nobody has ever heard of accepts her award, it's hardly a white privilege thing. It is a star privilege thing of a guy who has hosted the Academy Awards twice and the Emmy Awards three times.

Race has nothing to do with it.

Jimmy Fallon is the host of the Tonight Show. Kimmel has his own unfunny show on ABC called Jimmy Kimmel Live! The fact that they decided to put an "!" in the title says a lot of how bad it is.
