A very dim sunrise.

IMG_2540

There wasn't too much to see today, but it was nice to get out in the cool — 58° — weather. The day continued cool and overcast. Perfect for me, who can't be in the sun too long.

Hope all was well with you on the first day of this holiday weekend. Or, no, it’s Sunday, isn’t it? The second day. All days are both work days and holidays to me for the past 5 years and more.

Write about whatever you like in the comments.

Spent the day in the sun at the North Jetties riding waves and hanging with dolphins and black tips. Arroz con pollo at Los Loros afterward. Spending the evening with a baroque guitar book just so that I am able to butcher Scarlatti in a more pleasing manner. Life is very good.

Is it “bold-faced lie”, or “bald-faced lie”? I know there are bald-faced hornets, but they seem trustworthy.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

It's bald-faced lie.

And I love this time of year — September and, especially, October. Temperatures in the 60s. Perfect!

Autumn approaches. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. I've always loved fall the most, of all the seasons.

As of a few hours ago the police here had a vehicle and a person of interest in the Fletcher abduction. Back in the 80s(?) a nut kidnapped a teenaged girl and held her hostage in the attic of a local church for several weeks (months?).

"Talk about anything you like."

Not to ruin the mood, but I'd like to talk about George Soros and how he's going to survive the winter.

I don't think he will.

You know George Soros. He's the Hungarian billionaire who's been funding all the American DA's letting murderers and rapists walk free on bail.

Well, this weekend, one of the billionaire's granddaughters was thrown into the back of a black SUV, raped horribly, and then murdered. By one of the very same people George Soros has been spending his billions to ensure are on the streets, safe to rape and pillage. They were only supposed to rape the weak. But lo and behold. Doesn't work that way.

Is Davos listening? Do we have the attention of the Bilderberg agenda setters? Is George Soros on that agenda? What are the world's oligarchs and billionaires going to do about George Soros? Protector of your granddaughter's rapist?

Are they going to let him keep funding the rapists and murderers of their children and grandchildren?

Or are they going to DEAL. WITH. HIM? Are they going to DEAL with GEORGE SOROS and his murderous gang of rapists? DEAL. WITH. HIM.

It's going to be an interesting winter.

If I understand Mickey Kaus's recent tweets correctly he's saying that a tight labor market (caused by low workforce participation rates?) is driving wages up, and if prices are (or appear to be) relatively stable over the next month, blue collar voters may not be keen on voting the Democrats out. I don't think that many voters are really taken in by the "Season of Substance," but Kaus may have a point. He also speculates that the White House's Plan A was to make Trump the issue in the midterms with the Mar-a-Lago raid and the dark Independence Hall speech. Democrats hopes improved in the meantime and that dark strategy may have become counterproductive, but they went ahead with it anyway.

Kaus has been saying for a while that inflation may break before election day and that Republicans should concentrate on immigration and crime. But many Congressional Republicans really don't want to do anything about illegal immigration, and those who do don't want to be portrayed as the callous and heartless. There are also probably memories of past campaigns focusing on "law and order" that caused the party too much blowback. Plus, there has to be a positive vision, a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down in a more delightful way, and congressional candidates aren't good at providing that vision on their own.

Is it junk if it hooks you? Is it junk if it seems "cool" or "stylish"? Or are you just saying it's junk because it's popular?

A thought inspired by "Killing Eve," though you can fill in another title if you like.

as tucker pointed out, focusing on secondary or tertiary issues, hasn't helped many challengers, like the loser in the 19th district in new york, who despite a Conservative party label, was not focused on the issues at hand,

Missoula had its first smoky days of the summer, yesterday and today. I must say we're getting off easy. Everyone expected worse.

I went for my walk and didn't have any trouble breathing even at my age, 73.

I had a wonderful sunrise.
Got up at 2:00. Drove a bit over two hours. Hiked around 1.5 hours to Freemont Lookout.
Watched the sun rise over the Cascades and light up Mt Rainier.

Had the best corned beef hash ever this morning. Beautiful day at the pond. A nice mix of high cirrus and low cumulus and a light breeze. Muggy and 80-degrees the water at 75 is the peak of perfection for a strong swim out to the meadow then to the rocks and back to the beach. Tomorrow is supposed to rain all day and night so today feels like the last day of summer.

Back to the pool on Tuesday after a month of maintenance. Our next swim meet is in December. I've finally decided to give up butterfly. Haven't swum it for a couple months now and the rotator cuffs are pain free, mobile and strong. That means giving up on individual medley as well.

Bad shoulders are the baine of all swimmers. I want to keep doing it until I auger in. A man's got to know his limitations.

Missoula had its first smoky days of the summer,

I'm in Seattle. If I can see the sun as a red rubber ball after 8AM, then we are in wild-fire season.

It rained yesterday, so the wild-fire, hazy season had a setback.

Paddy O म्हणाले...

September and October tend to be the hottest times of year in SoCal. This past week, we had really high temps, but then a really nice rain blunted it, completely unexpected. The biggest fires here tend to be when the heat, the dryness, and the Santa Ana winds combine to make things almost impossible to fight fires.

I love Fall, but we don't really get Fall until late October and early November. I guess that's when the Midwest starts getting winter.

Elizabeth Truss is expected to become the new UK Prime Minister tomorrow. She is facing an energy crisis and a recession, much as we are in the US. She has stated that she will:
1. Approve leases for offshore production of natural gas.
2. End the ban on fracking for natural gas
3. End the visual blight spreading across the UK by restricting solar development commercial rooftops.
An amazingly practical energy policy! Make the UK Great Again!

FYI, in the promo for the new "American Gigolo" TV series, Rosie O'Donnell is a dead ringer for Jeb Bush.

It's been pretty much in the 60s all of summer in Dublin. Although, not without loads of rain.

Howard: "Had the best corned beef hash ever this morning."

Narr म्हणाले...

Since Tucker got mentioned, I wish he would stop saying that Lenin and Trotsky and the Bolshies overthrew the Tsar. (One of the few times Tucker has mentioned his own education he says he studied Russian history, or I wouldn't mind so much. He is open about his lack of a college degree, but still.)

The Bolshies overthrew the liberals, who had overthrown the Tsar and whose policy was to honor the commitment to the fight against Germany and not abandon the Allies and Associated Powers.

A great investment on the part of the Germans.

Howard, corned beef hash was one of my father's favorite foods. You made me think of him with your comment. Thanks. He died about 34 years ago, pancreatic cancer. He came to my wedding about 8 months before.

It's been raining here in Bellevue, WA. First real rain all summer. We've gotten drizel a couple of times, but no meaningful rain. Our dog hates the rain, so her evening walk was very, very short.

Searle "Minds, Brains and Science" lecture 1

"But unless some such connection takes place between the mind and the brain, aren't we left with the view that the mind doesn't mater, that it is as unimportant causally as the froth on the wave is to the movement of the wave?"

Froth on the waves has a major effect on the action of the waves. Little waves break preferentially at the peaks of longer waves (froth) and impart their momentum preferentially to long waves. This leads to a much faster production of long waves by wind than can be accounted for by linear instabilities. See M.S.Longuet-Higgins A Nonlinear Mechanism for the Generation of Sea Waves , 1969

The sun isn't so high in the sky. Wildlife is moving around. You can sleep with the windows open.
I often wonder why, when there is so much to be heard outside, that people walk around with earphones.

My sister will ask at restaurants if the corned beef hash comes from a can. She'll only order if it does. Can't say I disagree, it was a staple on our camping trips when we were kids. Hormel, now called Mary Kitchen.

Even my super lefty mom hated Biden's speech. She said it was a "missed opportunity" for the Dems to tell Americans what they're about.

I said "mom, that was the Dems telling Americans what they're about."
