"When Jen receives an accidental transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner (Marvel’s original Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo) she suddenly becomes She-Hulk."

"While Bruce’s Hulk is a cinder block of a man — or as Maslany put it, 'a roided-out gym maniac, to such a cartoonish degree' — Jen’s transformation, triggered by anger, looks different. Only some muscles bulge. Her breasts — not muscles! — bulge, too. Her waist whittles. Her hair straightens.... Maslany described She-Hulk’s bearing as heavier, less fidgety, more centered in the pelvis. 'The weight of She-Hulk brings her down into her loins in a different way,' she said. This might be the way a woman moved if she felt safe in the world, if she knew that no one could hurt her.... This new show suggests that a woman could be angry, and that the world would really like it.... 'She transforms into a hyper beautiful, hyper feminine version that might be more palatable in that anger,' Maslany marveled...."

From "As She-Hulk, Tatiana Maslany Is Beautiful When She’s Angry/The 'Orphan Black' actor described the giant, green protagonist of 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law' as 'weirdly, the closest thing to my own experience I’ve done ever'" (NYT).

Attorney at Law! So... a lawyer gets very very angry and sprouts extra-large breasts. It's just so embarrassingly dumb. The fantasy is that anger makes a woman especially attractive. I've never watched any Hulk shows or movies, so I'm just going to guess what Hulks — He-Hulks and She-Hulks get angry about: crime? Superhero stories are all about fighting crime, right? Anyway, I love this idea that when women become angrily powerful we become more centered in our "loins."

I tried watching the trailer, but it was too hard to get a look at the transformation, so I'm not going to embed it. For some weird reason, the audio was "Happy Together" by The Turtles. That's the polar opposite of anger. The skies'll be blue.

Theories about the Hulk's anger (and yes, there are theories) are a bit more nuanced than just positing a generalized hatred of crime.

I'm guessing Ann and the other commenters aren't lifelong Marvel Comics consumers. Having read most of the original Marvel comics starting with issue(s) #1, I have to say that some of the movies and series have been delightful. Others were pretty awful. However, it does require a total suspension of reality to appreciate and/or enjoy this form of entertainment. It's almost like you're expecting cartoon characters to look and act like normal people. It's the genre, folks.

She-Hulk the comic book character in the 90s and 00s was known for being big, green and sexy. The comic was humorous, sarcastic and the character often broke the 4th wall to talk to the reader, like Deadpool. Part of the joke was making fun of the readers who bought the comic for the sexy giantess.

I'm not sure how that will work in the show. It could seem derivative of Ryan Reynolds's portrayal of Deadpool.

I read Charles Soule's semi-recent run on She Hulk, and it was a lot of fun. The potential for amusing legal stories in a world filled with super heroes is high. Tatiana Maslany was magnificent in the first season and a bit of Orphan Black which started out as a highly engaging, reverse-Bechdel-test-failing :-), examination of the many varieties of female agency and then lost its way (anybody want to argue I should check out season 3, change my mind...). So I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm way behind in my Marvel watching. They seem to have also lost their way somewhat after the end of what I call "The Starkiad", that run of 20 or so movies that all revolve, to some extent, around Iron Man's moral journey.

Oh brother! Back in the good old days he'd show up all big and green, everyone would scream, and the Army would start lobbing 155 Howitzer shells at him. Also, he wasn't really green Bruce Banner back then. He was sort of a Hyde to Banner's Jekyll. Later on he devolved into being an almost mindless brute; with not only the Army chasing him, but organizations like Hydra and AIM trying to get ahold of him as well. All perfectly valid reasons to be full of rage. But that was back in the days when comics were fun entertainment and not "literature" like they try to be now.

Here's my review of

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Both Hulk movies kinda suck but this one is better than Ang Lee's flop. Norton is terrific. What a great actor. This is almost a sweet little love story. With a damn rogue general father-in-law subplot. I swear, the Marvel universe has more rogue generals than any other comic book corporation. I'm sure General Stryker and this commander ("Thunderbolt" Ross) are fighting for jurisdiction over the Hulk.

Stryker: "He's obviously a mutant, he's a big green mutant."

Thunderbolt: "He's not a mutant, he's a big green science project. And he's mine!"

Stryker: "He's a mutant! I want to kill the mutant!"

Thunderbolt: "Stay out of my comic book, Stryker! I'm the rogue general around here."

Anyway, this rogue general is bad. Rogue generals are always bad. Stay disciplined, soldier. And Hulk, again, is some kinda good. That's the basic problem with Hulk. He's not a hero, he's never going to be a hero, and yet they keep trying to make a hero out of the guy. Which is retarded. Hulk is a Jekyll and Hyde story, a werewolf story. I got a monster inside me! You should hate Hulk, he should be a horrible monster. And it should be a tragedy for Bruce Banner. But it's rarely like that. Hulk is always fighting bank robbers or some damn thing. The comic book even put him in a super-hero organization. "Somebody give Banner a hot foot, we need the Hulk!" The only Hulk story I ever liked was when the Batman kicked the crap out of him. That was awesome.

You know when DC comics and Marvel were negotiating for the Batman-Hulk comic book, the Marvel guys were aghast when they found out who was going to get his ass kicked.

"What do you mean, Batman wins? Hulk is more powerful than Superman."

"You want Batman? Batman wins."

"But, but, but..."

"You want Batman? Batman wins."

"It makes no narrative sense!"

"You want Batman? Batman wins."

And Batman kicks his ass, Batman kicks his ass.

The other problem with Hulk, aside from the fact that he can't even beat up Batman, is his CGI status. If you want a really big Hulk, a hulking Hulk, you can't put green makeup on some bodybuilder. You need CGI. And I'm sorry, but CGI still sucks. Hulk is an angry cartoon.

In the climax of this movie, we have two damn computer graphic images slugging it out and I'm yawning like a madman. That's the problem with putting a real actor in this movie. When Norton disappears in the third act, the drama goes with him. So Batman kicks Hulk's ass and Bruce Banner does too.

The Incredible Bruce Banner and the Not-So-Cool CGI Hulk is what they should have called it.

Why does her hair straighten? I just don't get how that ties in.

I haven't decided to be a woman, so can't interpret the sentence, "The weight of She-Hulk brings her down into her loins in a different way." Does that mean that her center-of-gravity is lower, or is it more of a metaphorical statement? Women generally have a lower center-of-gravity, and if anything, all that upper body meat and enhanced bosom would raise her center-of-gravity.

I am kind of old now, but I remember when going to the movies with a girl was kind of a prelude to a little romp, gave you something to talk about for a little while over a nightcap, but this seems more like a way to get the guy to hate women, and the woman to hate men.

The Hulk was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reimagined if it was all an accident and the doctor had no control over the transformation and no control over what the Hulk would do. That gave the interest, the two sides of the character of physically weak but mentally and morally strong Dr. Banner and physically strong but intellectually weak and morally ambiguous Hulk.

Mikey NTH म्हणाले...

I see others picked up on the Jekyll/Hyde, but the whole drama is the ambiguity. If there is no tension caused by the loss of control *and what could happen* then there really is no story. A controlled Hulk is just another superstrong comic book character. A Hercules without his 12 Labors. Stories need tension to keep interest.

Yes, the show was pretty good in the beginning. Then it lost the narrative thread or arc or throughline. They lost track of what they were supposed to be doing. I remember a lot of talk at the time about how it was a pathbreaking all-woman show (except for her gay male friend). It was shallow chatter then and talk like that is still shallow chatter.

There's a notion that girls are going to adopt all these woman superheroes as role models, but there are so many role models out there that it's hard to imagine that She-Hulk is going to be a heroine for very many girls. Girls aren't even likely to go to the movie. It's more for guys who go to all the Marvel movies. But Hollywood needs to give the public a justification for turning this stuff out.
