don't be bogarting that milkweed! Butterflies NEED it! You might think it's tasty but they NEED it!

Do you have a decent number of monarch butterflies that take advantage of laying eggs on your milkweed? My garden contains some milkweed plants and I haven't seen any monarch visitors this year (yet).

I’m as pro-pollinator as the next guy but, for this season, their job is done, finished, over. It’s migration time, chumps.

If you flipped the photos, Meade then would be under milkweed.

Breaking open dried milkweed pods and watching the little plumed seeds float away was the most fun ever when I was a kid. But pulling the plants out of a garden was a real pain. Milkweed roots are super deep!

Back in the 70s when I was reading (and writing for) The Mother Earth News, they did an article on using milkweed as a cheap substitute for down in making winter clothing. So I collected a bunch and tried it. Didn't work. Lotsa issues.

In other Mother Earth News news, they also did an article on how to make stranded rope by making a device which twisted incoming rope strands and then reversed them creating a three-strand rope. Worked.

Mother Earth News. It was kind of stupid but a big part of my 70s.

Milkweed fiber was used as a substitute for kapok in WW2 when kapok was unavailable.

I just planted a variety of swamp milkweed in the backyard. We'll see how it does.

Same here. I have seen maybe 3 or 4 Monarchs this whole summer. Lots of Black Swallowtail's though.
