"She was outstanding. Beautiful inside and out. We began all of it, our lives together, with such a great relationship."

Said Donald Trump, about Ivana Trump. He'd called up NY Post columnist Cindy Adams, because he was "just thinking how well you knew Ivana. You knew her very well. You knew her from the first."

Adams asked what he remembered about Ivana, and he said: "That she was different. That she never gave up. Beautiful, yes, but she was also a hard worker. No matter how rough things were or how badly they looked she never fell down. She went from communism to our lives together. She took nothing for granted.”

Never fell down.

Adams asked "if he thought we were about to also lose our country," and he said: "It’s horrible. We’ve never been at such a low point. That trip to Saudi Arabia? We have more oil than they have. This man in Washington is setting us all back. Setting everybody back."

That is correct.

He had a good relationship with her after the divorce. I knew someone who knew her and worked for her. She was not easy to get along with.

What a vicious comment---one that manages to fling snot at both.

Inga, one of Trump's manifest weaknesses is, he's a horn dog aka a sinner.

That fact does not diminish his recently-deceased wife one bit.

They say "Beauty is skin deep", but in you the ugliness goes all the way down.

Families are like that. Regrets. Plenty of regrets. But in spite of the regrets, people would still do what they did. Humans are stupid that way.

Trump loves courage and intelligence. A woman’s glamour is icing on the cake. Since he has the money he is not chasing after political loot like everyone else in DC is doing, and who attacked him for not playing the loot game with 4 years of mass media lies. He stood his ground and still stands it.

Who cares? I care about the well being of the 330 million in this country. We were in a good place when this man was president and now we are in a bad place. I don't care that he got a divorce and I don't care why.

Rosalyn C. म्हणाले...

What I remember from a program about the Trumps was that the fact that Ivana took on such a masculine role in the renovation of the Plaza Hotel changed their dynamic and Donald needed a woman who was less of a business partner and more of a romantic partner. Not an excuse at all. In fact, I heard a recording where Donald said elsewhere that one of his biggest regrets was that he messed up his marriage to Ivana, unlike his parents who had a life long lasting union. He admired that a lot.

"If she was so outstanding, why did he cheat on her?"

How does this question even made sense? You're blaming the woman for what the man does? If only you were a good enough wife, your husband wouldn't have cheated. How could you give more so that he wouldn't need to look outside the marriage? This is the most sexist line of thinking!

Lurker21 म्हणाले...

It's easy to be critical of politicians, but real people in real world situations often don't know what to say, and that's all the more true when we suffer a loss.

Many people in an earlier generation were warped by John F. Kennedy's cultivation of a sophisticated, largely artificial personality. Nobody else in politics seemed as stylish, and if you disliked politicians it was easy to dismiss them as boorish and brutish. What they missed was all the people who contributed to building and sustaining the Kennedy myth. It would be good if we'd advanced beyond all that.

As billionaire marriages go, it was better than average. He certainly negotiated a better divorce settlement than Bezos or Gates. And isn't that the important thing? Movers and shakers should be judged on the quality of their divorce and not their marriage. Trump didn't lose half his money and remained on speaking terms with his ex-wife. That's as good as it gets for billionaires.

CStanley म्हणाले...

The posts from Inga, Rosalyn C and Althouse make for an interesting discussion about the dynamics and morality of marriage.

Man marries woman who appeals to him for superficial reasons, without realizing fully who she is. I think this is true to some extent in all marriages- we fall in love with the person we think our spouse is but don’t fully know them yet and may learn things that either deepen the love or strain it.

The choice then is to learn to love the full person that we are just beginning to know, and grow alongside him or her….or break our vow, divorce, and find someone else who fits our original ideal.

Donald Trump doesn’t strike me as someone who puts the ideals of commitment above the ideals of his own desires, so he chose option #2. To his credit though, he sees that there is this higher ideal and that the divorce was his choice and not due to Ivana’s flaws.

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

Really? "We've never been at such a low point." REALLY?

(Answer: No.)

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

"And if Hillary was so outstanding, why did Bill Clinton cheat on her."

Well, then...who is saying anything about Hillary being outstanding?

That being said, men (and women) who cheat do so because they are selfish and they want the sexual excitement that always attaches to a new partner. That they cheat speaks much about them and little to nothing about their spouses. The most wonderful people in the world are not immune to having their spouses cheat on them if their spouses are cheaters.

Narr म्हणाले...

Inga somehow manages to outdim herself.

Men marry women who they think will not change, but they do; women marry men who they think will change, but they don't.

Considering that I don't know the real and root reasons of the divorces of my closest and oldest divorced friends (and don't need or want to know) it's a mug's game to speculate about the rich and famous.

Here you go....

“There has never been any man or woman more qualified for this office than Hillary Clinton,” Obama said.

Yet Bill cheated on her, calling that claim into question-----at least according to the "reasoning" of Wise, Fair and Caring Inga.

Vance म्हणाले...

Inga claims to have a child, I think.

If she were to have another child, would she love the first one less? It appears so, based on her claim that "if Ivana was so wonderful why did Trump leave her?" If Inga's daughter is so wonderful, why would Inga have another?

Well, this actually might make sense to Inga, of the party of "we need to kill mre humans to save Gaia!"

It is to Trump's credit that he has so much good to say about his ex-wife. Most divorced couples think the other is Satan incarnate.

Christopher B म्हणाले...

Ahh, Inga, you're gonna have to do better if you want to survive the struggle sessions. Rosalyn C shows how to do it. You can't just throw random insults at Goldstein. You gotta remember if Eastasia is an enemy or an ally, whose picture was removed from newspapers and encyclopedias last week, and how much the chocolate ration was increased to. It has to go beyond a matter of remembering even, you have to live and believe that 2 + 2 = 5 if the Party says it is.

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

You've surreptitiously changed the predicate of your original remark.

Ivana's LIFE is over. Trump is speaking of when she was alive.

Obama was speaking of Hillary when he claimed she was outstanding, when her political career was very much alive.

Sounds almost like Vance is trying to make a case for polygamy. Marriage vows might be a good reason to not cheat on his wives. If a husband loved his first wife so much, why dump the first one for the second one? That is why I question Trump’s sincerity. I suppose some men of certain religions might like the idea of keeping the first wife and adding a second one, maybe Vance is thinking along those lines?

farmgirl म्हणाले...

Pretty sure my answer to Inga’s question was even more sexist.

But Trump says we have more oil than the Saudis, so if the price is higher, doesn’t that mean we are getting paid more, and that we are a bigger beneficiary of the higher prices than the Saudis?
