"I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to raise an American girl in this moment.... Their right to bodily autonomy is more conditional."

"The backlash against not conforming to gendered ideals seems more virulent than in recent memory.... Maybe part of the answer is telling the truth in all its absurd failure and glory. Several brilliant American Girl doll meme accounts on Instagram have done just that. They’ve made me laugh and, even though they’re laced with dark irony, they still retain some of the plucky hopefulness of Kit and Samantha. These accounts take photos of the American Girls and put them in ridiculous situations for a doll. Many of their posts portray the dolls witnessing random historical moments — like when Dan Quayle misspelled the word 'potato' — with their blank yet slightly knowing half-smiles dominating the images.... A meme account whose Instagram handle is a bawdy play on 'Kit Kittredge' posted a viral image after Roe v. Wade fell, highlighting the states where the Nixon-era American Girl doll Julie may have had more access to abortion in 1974 than we do today.... Within the world of these memes, there is nothing the world won’t throw at an American Girl doll, and there is nothing she can’t do.... [My daughter is] a few years away from marching on the National Mall, but she’s learning that progress doesn’t happen without effort and determination, and that’s a message any American girl should know by heart."

Writes Jessica Grose, in "What It Means to Raise an American Girl Now" (NYT).

The "bawdy play on 'Kit Kittredge'" — presumably not fit to print in the New York Times (those body shamers!) — is "Klit Klittredge," and here's how that image looked:

Let's see the map in 1972.

Also, there is a process to be followed in the state legislatures. Here in Illinois by the time the Demmies are done, you'll be able to off the kid for 90 days after birth if it cries too much.

That historic moment when Dan Quayle misspelled "potato" was preceded by another the not so historic act. It occured when an elementary school teacher (95% probability that said elementary school teacher was a "binary" female) spelled the word as "potatoe" on a flash card. The flash card was handed to Quayle who was judging a spelling bee in a campaign photo opp. Like Slow Joe, Quayle "read what was on the telepromper/flash card".

The media promptly branded Quale as a dolt. The modern media does not brand Brandon as a dolt for his literal reading of the stage instructions on the teleprompter. Different "historic times", different standards.

"Their right to bodily autonomy is more conditional."

Basing unlimited abortion on some presumed "right to bodily autonomy" was always a weird prog argument. No such right ever existed, none was to be found in the Constitution, no man was under any illusion that he possessed such a right, and even if one were to grant such a right to women, its exercise necessarily entailed certain responsibilities--as in: if you autonomously decide to share your body with another, you become responsible for the consequences.

Nonsense on stilts. I know this is the New York Times, but I expect even them to have a horseshit limit.

"I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to raise an American girl in this moment.... Their right to bodily autonomy is more conditional."

If she were a deeper and more honest thinker, she'd recognize that that is only superficially true. All people, men and women, face numerous limits on bodily autonomy and she supports almost all of them. It's just not useful for her right now to admit that.

And, of course, she still has almost all the usual options to not have a child, including the most effective one of all. But she's a stooge masquerading as a thoughtful person, blindly advancing a certain brand of activism and she's too dumb to recognize what she's doing.

Because that's how you get an Op-Ed in the New York Times.

Progress, is when the things I like happen.

To the people who favor protecting innocent Human life and to the people who think contentious issues should be resolved as locally as possible and in the most democratic ways, Dobbs represents progress.

Maybe the doll can be taught to protect itself, from STD's and other things that happen when you have unprotected sex. The doll may be smarter than many regressive progressives who just want to kill as many babies as they can.

gendered ideals

they mean? Like that if when you born, you were assigned a female gender..
BUT! it turns out, that you like masculine things like trucks (or the color blue)..
THEN! you ARE NOT a woman, but, in reality.. ARE a man?
Those gendered ideals ?

I've reached my limit on degreed young white progressive women, born in New York or schooled there, or at an Ivy, telling the world how they should behave and what they should believe. From what I've seen, the degrading of our culture may not have started with young, white, degreed, progressive women, but it sure took it's steroid shots from them. Wokeness is spread, managed, and enforced by young white progressive degreed women. Prahgrahsahv polcies are spread, managed, and enforced by young white degreed progressive women.

I'm pretty much up to my eyeballs with child-like thinking and demands and stomping of feet. I suspect I'm not alone. This is what the New York Times and their sophisticated writers and audience love to wallow in. Let them have at it. It's moved beyond parody at this point. These are the most isolated thinkers in our midst.

Lloyd W. Robertson said...

How can the woke square the circle of saying abortion is primarily an issue for cis-women, and saying gender and sexual orientation are entirely what an individual says they are, with no reference to any objective or testable reality? ((I'm tempted to say "like transubstantiation," which comes up in Gulliver's Travels, but I digress). The latter proposition implies that it is always misleading to speak of "women" in a way that does not include "whoever feels like calling themselves a woman, or even pretending they can get pregnant when they actually cannot."

It may work to say that we are all bodies with feelings. Other than these feelings, there is no such thing as a soul. We may be happy or unhappy with the body we are born with. We may fix it up on our own, sometimes every day. We may get more permanent work done. We may decide our body doesn't match our gender, and get that fixed. We may get pregnant and decide we don't want that, so we get that fixed. We may have a body that can't get pregnant, and try to get that fixed. Any sense that there are a lot of cis males, and a lot of cis females, they tend to be attracted to each other, they are designed to reproduce and it generally feels natural to care for their young, has to be rejected. A while ago it would be said this is a mystical teleology, and modern physics teaches that it isn't true. The woke never seem to have read anything, and they don't need no fancy talk to get what they want.

Urg.

I am for legislatures mindfully passing laws about the limits on abortion acceptable to the majority of people in their states or in this country.

But I don't know. Yesterday's senate hearing was dismal. A witness wouldn't say "women" and would only say "people with a capacity for pregnancy", declared if you wouldn't acknowledge people other than women can have babies it was violence, and refusing to answer whether a baby in the womb had worth.

Whether or not you agree with him, if you ever heard him in a discussion outside of politics, he is far brighter than most of what is served up to us today from our media and/or our Congress or White House.

Potato my ass. Here's an historic moment she should have remembered: Biden's pull-out of Afghanistan. Obama's and Biden's paying off the Iranians to...what? Stop making nukes? Seriously?

They SURE AS HELL DID NOT in 1973
up until 1973, THE GOVERNMENT could tell men, that Their body was going into the service,
and IF they had a problem with That, they could go to Jail

Being forced to have to put up with another person inside you for 9 months sounds kinda bad
Being forced to DIE retaking Hamburger Hill sounds a LOT worse.

The original American Girl dolls were made by the Pleasant Company. The company opened as mail order only in the 80s. My daughter was around 10, and she loved the catalogs. Each doll had a collection of period costumes, appropriate furniture and accessories for her times, and books that told stories of a little girl's life in those times. They didn't come cheap. The dolls were targeted for 10 year olds based on the reading level of the books. Sometime in the late 90s the company was purchased by Mattel. Then the dolls changed more than a bit. More contemporary dolls more like the "Career Barbie". Ice skaters, dancers, etc. Then they moved onto dolls from other countries. The brand now has little in common with the original company.

I'm not a doll collector. I'm just a soft touch when little girls in my life ask for dolls for gifts. It's been a long time since one of them hit me up for an American Girl doll. I still get asked for Barbies. But not the "curvy one" because none of Barbie's clothes fit her.

I would suggest to Julie that she gave up her right to bodily integrity when she allowed an enpenised individual to breach her (or his) vagina with their penis. It’s essentially estoppel. She consented to the intrusion of the fetus into her body by engaging in heterosexual sex with an enpenised individual. Of course, there is a tiny percentage of the population that doesn’t understand that heterosexual sex leads to pregnancy, but we tend to neuter them, for just that reason. But the rest of the uterus possessing portion of the population can safely be assumed to possess this knowledge. So, the license to the resulting fetus to violate their body integrity is knowingly consented to by their conduct in engaging in heterosexual sex.

When I was five, my mother and I were visiting neighbors across the street. They had a daughter two years older and she had a doll, but it was naked from the waist down for some reason. I was shocked at the absence of male genitalia because I thought we all had the same junk. Why wouldn't we, my five-year-old mind wondered?

My mother and her friend assured me that it was okay, and that nothing was wrong because girls were different down there. But they didn't say exactly how. But from tat moment on I spent the next seven years obsessed with finding that out.

When an older friend showed me may first spread-legged woman porn photo, at about 12, I was absolutely stunned at what I saw. And yet still very much intrigued. Fortunately my friend let me keep the picture to study for a few days.

Kids at five aren't intellectually equipped to grasp the concept of gender differences. Twelve, yes. Five, clearly not.

Mark,

So an entire human body (male, of course) can be conscripted and sent to death, but a part of one cannot be sold, even if it saves someone else's life? I also second effinayright's question: What of aborted body parts? Abortion-rights activists say that a fetus is "part of a woman's body" (make that "part of the body of a person capable of experiencing pregnancy"!). Are such parts "chattel"? Seriously. Either they are "part of" the woman (or PCOEP), in which case they may not be sold any more than a kidney may; or else they are "part of" the fetus, in which case no consent can be given at all.

I know PP says that they don't make actual money from the "tissues" they donate for "medical research." But frankly I remember that Project Veritas video of a PP abortion doctor asserting, over the scones and champagne, that depending on what the buyer wanted she could "crush" here or there. That does not sound to me as though the baby bits were just waste tissue, otherwise to be flushed down the sink.

Today's American Girl has access to much better contraception than in 1974.
The teen birth rate and the abortion rate have fallen significantly as a result. Girls and women can and do make choices.

In recent years, teens are delaying sexual activity, as well as other adult things such as getting a drivers' license and getting a part-time job. And, of course, many more teen-age girls think they're gender-neutral or male, which I think is a way of delaying adulthood.

No, people are not things, they are not objects, they are not property.
The human body, which is the outward manifestation of the person, is not property. Parts of that body are not property. The children that they produce - even if in a petri dish - are not property.

And to the extent that they can be argued to be property, the 13th Amendment prohibits commerce in human beings or parts thereof.

Absolute bodily autonomy would seem to mean to dems right now abortion up until the hour of birth. Is that the hill they really want to die on? Because a strong majority do not want recognizable babies aborted, considering it murder. Calling it a "right" elides over this distinction.
Also, isn't it a little creepy using a doll that looks too young to legally have sex as your spokesperson for abortion? She looks like 12 or so.
As to absolute autonomy--why doesn't that extend to getting vaccinated? Just asking for 80,000 terminated national guards.

This reminds me of the long history of Leftists (progs) pushing for birth control in schools. This is for kids who are legally minors, like 13 or 16. They also wanted kids to be able to get the pill without parent's knowledge or even an abortion without their knowledge. But if a 14 yr old is sexually active, someone can go to jail and get on the sex offender list. Progs never care about the side-effects of their obsessions.

Part of PP's push for abortions later and later in pregnancy is the traffic in fetal body parts. First trimester there is not much to sell. And that abortionist in the Veritas video was talking about the Lamborghini she wanted.
