"If there’s one consolation in Biden’s age, it’s that he can step aside without conceding failure. There’s no shame in not running for president in your 80s."

"He emerged from semiretirement to save the country from a second Trump term, and for that we all owe him a great debt. But now we need someone who can stand up to the still-roiling forces of Trumpism. There are plenty of possibilities: If Vice President Kamala Harris’s approval ratings remain underwater, Democrats have a number of charismatic governors and senators they can turn to. Biden said, during the 2020 campaign, that he wanted to be a 'bridge' to a new generation of Democrats. Soon it will be time to cross it."

That's the end of the new Michelle Goldberg column, "Joe Biden Is Too Old to Be President Again" (NYT).

There's a link on "underwater" and "bridge" but not on "a number of charismatic governors and senators." I wonder who that refers to but guess that they sound more charismatic without names attached. Those wonderful governors and senators out there somewhere. Gavin Newsom, presumably. One is a number, after all. Two can be as bad as one.

Anyway, did the NYT notice the ambiguity in the headline. Does it mean he wasn't too old the first time, but if he wants to be "president again," we must inform him that now he's aged out? Or does it mean he was too old before and he's too old again?

It's that he's too senile to be president. And I'm not saying not to be the president again in 2024.

He's too senile to be the president right now.

We have the 25th Amendment for a reason and this man's cabinet needs to step up to their responsibilities to the country. They swore an oath to protect the country ... not to protect Joe Biden.

Right now the Left is concerned about maintaining their own reputations for having supported Biden, rather than any thought for the reputation of Biden himself.

The bench of Democratic governors? Well, the most important issue for a candidate is name-recognition. There's Mario Cuomo, who is very famous for reasons. There is Gretchen Whitmer. Then there is... hmmm

JB Pritzker is kinda famous for being a billionaire before entering politics. Name sounds like a Covid vaccine, which might or might not help with the voters' recognition issue. He has the same sort of reputation for earning his office as Kamala Harris, except with Rod Blagojevich instead of Willie Brown. Everybody in media has forgotten "Tony" Rezko so that's no help.

Ann, what would you think about Tony Evers making a grab for national office? He looks older than he is. He has a background that seemingly qualifies him to weigh in on all the school district / board / leadership issues now making news. Does he have name recognition outside Wisconsin? (The lack of that seemed to hinder Scott Walker fromthe GOP side during the 2016 primaries)

Here we have the perennial Beto O'Rourke who keeps gaining experience in how to run campaigns. Maybe he can try for the White House?

They can't. The Dems would need GOP support to make the 25th Amendment work, and even then, it doesn't remove Biden from office, just makes Harris "Acting President" for as long as they can sustain it. There's no way that doesn't lead to a Dem civil war.

I suspect that there was an agreement originally that Biden would step back after the first year, to allow Harris to become the face of the Admin before his resignation in 2023. The problem is that if he leaves now, he will be judged a failure and he knows it. Biden, or the people around him, also realize that Harris will be a disaster as well.

How do I know that the Left is ready to give Biden the heave ho?

Because the Hunter Biden leaks aren't being repressed and are even being discussed by the Left. And to think two years ago they were ready to die on that hill.

I still think they'll try to force him out before the midterms, if it looks like they're going to get slaughtered. Some new information about Hunter's dealings will come to light, and the Dem leadership will soberly announce that it calls for the appointment of a special prosecutor. Biden will be quietly told that if he steps aside, it will all go away.

Biden need not “concede failure” by the act of stepping aside but his record speaks for itself and the problem is he has been pushing the exact agenda Democrats campaigned for with the disastrous results that were so predictable that Trump is on record in 2020 predicting we’d be here with sky high inflation driven by anti-oil policies. Cheap plentiful oil built the wealthy lifestyle Americans enjoyed pre-Biden. We know the way back and not one D governor or Senator is going to take America in the right direction. It’s not Biden’s inability to “sell” or communicate; it’s the policies themselves that are the problem.

There's a purely practical problem with Biden stepping aside. The Democrats lose the Vice President spot and most importantly the tie breaking Senate vote. However, his utter incompetence and, by extension, the utter incompetence of his party cannot be publicly admitted by the "elite," given the party is both their religion and and their money train, so we get this wishy-washy "he's too old" excuse. I worry about that, too but Trump obsessing about 2020 will help them do it again. He has a plethora of real issues. The Arizona legislature is working to prevent what happened last time but Trump is not helping with some of his endorsements.

In one sense Biden saved the country in that his election allowed the Dems to call off their Antifa and BLM foot soldiers, but that's like saying that paying the extortion money saved us from the Mafia.

Democrats have a number of charismatic governors and senators they can turn to.

Name one. Just one.

A night or two ago Judge Jeanine on THE FIVE made the point, re Dementia Joe's age, that she knows lots of people who are older than Joe who don't exhibit the signs of mental and physical decline he does. I'm sort of a loner so I can't say, as she does, that I know "lots" of sharper seniors, but my impression is that the judge is on the right track. I remember about a yea ago there was some footage of ol' Joe heading off by himself into an ice cream shop and it was my first time thinking, "Wow--those people on Instapundit making those Grandpa Simpson jokes about him are on to something!" The vacant eyes, the slurred speech, etc.--all there. All that was missing was Joe shaking his fist at the sky and yelling at the clouds.

"If I remember correctly Biden still has an approval rating in the mid to high 60's with self identified Democrats. Who are these people?"

Forget civility! They are exactly who we think they are.

Stephen St. Onge म्हणाले...

IMAO, the important part of this is that this is the second story in two days to say “Joe must go.”  It almost certainly means the Dems are going to push him out, possibly before 2024.

To anyone who says stolen elections are ridiculous....

Hillary Clinton claimed and still claims that a few million in weird russian spend on facebook ads - some of which were pro-her - overcame the billions she spent and tilted the election against her.

Stacey Abrams claims Georgia was stolen from her.

I could go on, but these are 2 mainstream figures in the last few election cycles who have claimed their elections were stolen. With ALOT less shenanigans than went on in 2020...

There are plenty of possibilities: If Vice President Kamala Harris’s approval ratings remain underwater, Democrats have a number of charismatic governors and senators they can turn to.

Zero is a number, right?

I've heard them pushing Jared Polis of CO. He's up for election in November. The Latest poll, from a D leaning group, had him at 50%
Now, it had the GOP candidate at 37%. But while a lot can change between now and November, very little of it is going to be helpful to a Dem.

Obama got a generation of D politicians wiped out in 2010. I'm hopeful that Biden will be able to match or exceed him

Article IV, Section 4 Constitution
The Text
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature can-not be convened) against domestic Violence.

The Meaning
This provision, known as the guarantee clause, is attributed to James Madison. It has not been widely interpreted, but scholars think it ensures that each state be run as a representative democracy, as opposed to a monarchy (run by a king or queen) or a dictatorship (where one individual or group of individuals controls the government). Courts however have been reluctant to specify what exactly a republican form of government means, leaving that decision exclusively to Congress.

The section also gives Congress the power (and obligation) to protect the states from an invasion by a foreign country, or from significant violent uprisings within each state. It authorizes the legislature of each state (or the executive, if the legislature cannot be assembled in time) to request federal help with riots or other violence.

1: There are no charismati9c Democrat Senators. That was clearly established during the 2020 Dem Presidential Primary

2: Who are the Dem Governors?
Evers, Whitmer, Pollis: All up for re-election this year, which is shaping up to be a red wave to exceed 2010 and 1994. It's really hard to run on the "vote for me, pay no attention to the fact that my own State just rejected me" platform

Newsom, Pritzker: If the Dems want to run on "Let's turn the US into CA or IL", I'm all in favor of that

Who else?

I'd personally LOVE to see the identity politics obsessed Dems try to toss a black female VP under the bus so they can run a white male politician. The civil war there would be glorious.

As for Whitmer, the person who forced stores to stop selling gardening supplies during her Covid lockdowns?
The ONLY reason that she got away with he orders is because she never had to argue them. AS they were incoherent and unjustifiable, I'd love for her to be the Dem candidate in 2024.

Of course, I'll love it more if she loses this year

Starvation is their strategy. Look at Holland and Sri Lanka. Hungry beggars are easier to rule.

The “hungry beggars” of Sri Lanka forced that country’s political leaders to run for their lives. Literally.

Donald Trump should let go of 2020 and start explaining what he and a GOP House and Senate will do to fix all the things Biden, Pelosi, and Schumer have broken since January 2021.

Imagine a serious speech, somewhere redolent of the Nation's past glories, in which he does just this, using some form of words to set aside all the nonsense about the 2020 election and outlining instead a grand program for the four years from January 2025. He could do this and, I imagine, be assured of election to a second term, probably with a GOP Congress. But he won't, because, in addition to his undeniable virtues and political successes, he is a petty vindictive little man. We shall see; anyone can grow in the virtues and leave his meannesses behind who sets his mind to it.

He IS too old (i.e., right now) to be President again (i.e., in 2025 on). But somehow, there's no implication that he's too old to be President now. The tense knots these people tie themselves in, not to speak the truth. Forget it Jake, it's the NYTimes.

Hilarious and disturbingly ominous at the same time.

"Look for the rainbow, Joe--do you see it? Yes! That's right, there it is, just over that hill. That rainbow is really a bridge, Joe, a magical bridge leading to the best place you can imagine! Soon it will be time for you to cross it."

Outside of governors and senators, I recall a guy named Avenatti that was just the ticket.

And Cuomo was a hero of the virus wars.

How is what we have now better than a second Trump term? Did we need "saving" from that? Put aside election security issues, which are not at all resolved from 2020, and I'd still say maybe Biden actually *hurt* us by depriving us from what would likely be a much better second Trump term than a first Biden term has delivered. But for the Media and the Left, Trump is such a Devil, however bad things are now, they can't see that a Trump second term would have been better. That's a real problem that goes way beyond Trump and Biden.
