Beasts of Wisconsin.

1. There are 24,000 bears in Wisconsin: "The DNR said in 1989 there were only about 9,000 black bears in the state. Now the population is up to 24,000. 'Our bear population has been steadily increasing and expanding southward'...."

3. We spotted 6 foxes romping together in our neighbor's lawn just before sunrise the other day. They were very active, even trying to run up a tree. The next day, same time and place, I saw them again. At what point do you say, now, there are too many foxes?

4. Seen today in great numbers: very tiny toads/frogs (about a half inch long), extremely nervous chipmunks, rabbits (doing their best to look like rocks), turkeys.

At what point do you say, now, there are too many foxes?

Well, let's see...there's the main Fox Network, Fox News, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2...

Althouse and Meade need to organize a fox hunt in Madison.

Even polar bears are increasing in number. You know, the species doomed by global warming.

The world is not ending, though the greenies are making a go of it.

The "good" news is that only 17,000 of the bears are registered to vote in Milwaukee.

The day they eat their first Chihuahua.

Six foxes together suggests a large litter. In my (northern Virginia/DC suburb) neighborhood -- named Fox Mill because of their prevalence, which has continued for 50 years -- it's rare to see foxes together. Several years ago, a fox made her den under our shed, and she and her kits played together in the back yard in the spring. It was quite charming to see them frolick in the snow. Other than that, I've never seen foxes together here. (The neighborhood has very few outdoor cats; between foxes and hawks and owls, it's not safe. On the other hand, it's also fun to see and hear hawks play together in our back yard.)

Anyway, "too many" foxes would really be if they are over-predating other wildlife. That's eventually a self-correcting problem, but one might not want to wait that long due to the effects on the prey populations.

Yup, Nature, can’t live with it, can’t live without it. Yup.

I hear there is a weasel in the governor's mansion.

What we have too many of are rabbits. We do our best to keep them out of the backyard, and mostly succeed, but they wreak havoc with the front yard plantings. They're untouchable and they know it.

We'll be passing through Madison in a few weeks, hope to find some hognose snakes or something while we're there.

1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

2 And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:

3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:

4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.

5 Ab=nd Moses asked the Lord at what point do you say, now, there are too many frogs?

Watched one large skunk followed by four baby skunks march across the field in perfect formation yesterday. Haven't seen anything that cute since the last Jan. 6 congressional hearsay committee meeting.

Yup.

Here in suburban Boston, bunny rabbits are over-running us. We see them EVERY DAY, sometimes two or three.

I planted some 12" jalapeno and habanera pepper plants a few weeks ago, and put them in a sturdy cage with obstacles inside to keep the critters out. No flowers on the plants, let alone the appearance of actual peppers.

They breached the defenses....and took away the plants: stems, leaves, all the way down to the roots.

Next step: well-placed Claymore mines. With sensitive triggers.

Obviously, it went north to escape Global Warming.

It's a climate refugee!!

Quaestor म्हणाले...

The so-called "alligator" looks more like a caiman. The beast was someone's pet. Crocodilians can survive in northern water in the high summer when they can bask in the sun and keep their body temperatures high but they can't reproduce that far north. Their reproductive cycle is tied to the average daylight temperature.

"Althouse and Meade need to organize a fox hunt in Madison."

I'm willing to consult. I know most of the proper hunting etiquette by heart. The scarlet coats are called pinks.

Vulpine young are called kits. Their dam is a vixen and their sire is a tod.

Bear meat is rather dark and stringy in appearance, rather oily without frank fat as to cooking. Tastes so to speak like beefier beef. Oddly similar to whale.

Those 29000 bears like to eat foxes. And those foxes are opportunistic omnivores, cleaning up all the overpopulated rodents, among other things.
